  1. You sure introduced me at least to "Years Of Tears". I only knew that 45 for the flipside earlier. 2 good sides made me splash out £20 on it quite soon after I found out about it. The Frank Polk version is better than Rivingtons IMO, what does it matter whether it's any good for "northern purposes"?
  2. What else is there? Nah, just kidding. Yes, I'm very into gritty r&b/soul that leans heavily towards the rock'n'roll side of things. I like my soul/r&b with an edge. Saying that, I also love plenty of non-gritty soul as well... Ahhh! I love it all. I'm glad you liked my selection!
  3. So you're saying that you actually LIKE the "girly backing"?
  4. Interesting how taste differs. ALL other versions, including myself singing it in the shower, are better than the Maurice Jackson version in my opinion. It's that dreadful opera singer in the background which completely ruins it for me.

The Swan issue is from 1965. The one on BB was released in 1967.

I think it's a great piece of mellow early 70s soul!
  7. It's a bit tricky, but possible... let's say that you want to download Pete's second northern mix... The mix can be found on this page: /index.p...cmd=si&img=3943 Go to "view source" (or something like that) in the tab next to "edit" (can't remember what it's called in english) in your browser. A new window opens. Click "edit" and then "search". Search for "mp3". You will find this link: uploads/1110659428/gallery_1893_80_1922682.mp3 Now... paste that after the following: / And you'll get a link like this: /uploads..._80_1922682.mp3 Now... "right click" on the link above and choose "save target as". Do this for all the files you want to download... Or Mike could just add an option of "download this file" on the sounds page...
  8. Stick it on eBay. I've seen Buddah distributed copies go for $30-$100. I can probably give you £25 if you don't need it.

The original was indeed issued on the red Pure Soul label. It sold loads and loads of copies when released so should be easy and cheap to pick up. Manship has got it for £15 but that is WAY too much. Not booted as far as I know. Here are some copies on eBay: https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=4704475956 https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=4711126399 https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=4712386358
  10. Indeed, that Rivingtons 45 is a fine double sider. "I Love You Always" is the preferable side IMO although both are fantastic. Recent copies on eBay have been selling for $50-$65-ish... I.e. £20-£35-ish I guess. Have never seen a vinyl copy, only styrene demos and issues. Has anyone got a vinyl one? Wanna sell it?
  11. Thanks for all of your comments! Really glad you liked my selection of tunes.
  12. Glad I could be of help. Now... sort me out with a copy of that Zodiacs 45 please...
  13. think you have to encode it at a fixed bit rate. go for: MONO sampling rate: 22050 constant bitrate: 48kbps

Originally issued on Startime as Johnny Love.
  15. Glad you liked it. Frank Polk recorded the original version of it on one of his Capitol 45s. A much "deeper" take on the tune and probably the preferable one to my ears (if I have to choose, which I thankfuly don't ). Here's an RA of Frank Polk as well:
  16. The german Bear Family label will release all episodes on DVDs over the next year or so. There will be 4 or 5 episodes on each DVD. The first 3 volumes has already appeared. Check them out: https://www.bear-family.de/mailorder/showon...ng=&p=BVD+20126 https://www.bear-family.de/mailorder/showon...ng=&p=BVD+20127 https://www.bear-family.de/mailorder/showon...ng=&p=BVD+20128 Haven't bought them myself yet, but judging by the extremely high standard which Bear Family usually has, I'm sure these DVDs are very nice indeed.
  17. I just put together an MP3 mix of some current soul/r&b faves of mine for another forum and thought that perhaps someone here would be interested in hearing it as well. 18. The Fiery Spartans was probably just a name for the backing band which Major Bill Smith came to think of while ordering the labels for the 45... the label states "vocal by Pic & Bill". The flipside, entitled "Cool", is the exact same instrumental recording which was issued 15 times or so on Charay by different artists as "Patsy". Here's a scan of the Fiery Spartans disc:
  19. No, sorry, that's one of the few 45s by them that I still haven't been able to locate a copy of.

A VG++ copy (american grading) sold on eBay six days ago for $355 (about £175-ish). A lesser copy sold four days ago for $255 (£125-ish). So I guess you should be able to get a M- one for about £200.
  21. Little Sherman & The Mod Swingers - The Price Of Love - SAGPORT or ABC £10-ish any day of the week. And don't forget... Betty Wright - Baby Sitter - ALSTON ...a fantastic tune which surprisingly few people on the northern scene seems to know about. Should never cost more than £3-£5. Attaching an RA of Little Sherman below.

  23. There's an (incomplete) Charay discography on David Flynn's site, check it out: https://www.capitolsoulclub.homestead.com/Charaylisting.html
  24. And to answer myself here some six months later... yes the Fiery Spartans "Talk About Love" 45 does exist, I've got a copy. It's the exact same recording as Pic & Bill and was most likely the first release for that tune. Do you need to know anything else Gareth?
  25. There have been a bunch of different labels around using the Red Label name. One with Linda Clifford, Silent Treatment, Buckinghams and Osborne & Giles. One with some The Emotions releases. And then there's the one with some Barbara Trent 45s. Don't know if it's any of these you need info on.
