  2. next sunday (may bank hol) there are two all dayers and a 'big' evening event , all within a stones throw from each other. where will they all choose to go? lets just hope there are enough punters' to go round. seems to me that sometimes there is an over abundance of venues to choose from. good or bad? i dunno
  3. talkin of Ruben Howell.... i had the Carl Carlton version, cracking tune
  4. yeah thats fair enough Nick. i have both albums here, been a long time since i played either of them. poet 1 was 81, second was 84.
  5. I bought the Poet 2 on its release in 84, so theres no way so many sides was a casino spin. unless of course there was an alternative version beforehand. IAN

  7. thanks for that Pete, i just (wrongly) assumed that SS had made 'bootleg' in the true sense of the word. The Belles sounds good, the west coast connection there
  8. oh yes Ken thats it , it certainly is a poor quality of sound
  9. nice one. thanks for the response. so i'm correct in assuming Ms Willis was someone dragged off the street for some over dub work?
  10. i seem to remember buying in the late 70's, a tune with the very same 'james conwell/richard temple' backing track, sung by a certain Carolyn Willis. (correct spelling?) can anyone shed light on this , or did i imagine it?
  11. I used to enjoy the 100 club in the 80s But my friends & myself found that it changed & was not playing music for the regulars............................this is just my opinion.......................but we always thought it's best to keep your regulars happy, as folk just off the street would come & go So we ended up going to Capital Soul & Scenesville Debbie x

  15. oooops double post
  16. I like to call it 'early soul' , a quick example off top of head is : Good Rockin - Jnr Walker.... as far as im concerned this is a wonderful raw/gritty early 60's recording that ticks all the boxes. Sam Cooke, Harvey Fuqua, Berry Gordy, Ike Turner, etc etc were all churning it out in the 50's and still doin it in the 60's. the transitional period that changed the music we know into 'Soul' happened because it happened! bands like The Yardbirds, Stones, Bluesbreakers (UK bands) took on the title of RnB. oddly enough, dancefloors still creak whilst Wynder K Frogg plays his organ , or Charlie Gracie does his best Elvis impression. its a broad spectrum which to this day has its' own charts in the states. Uptempo soulful dance music of most era's will do me, however old it is get off yer arses and enjoy it
  17. now now John, the time we went, it was a good night all round, enjoyed it
  18. Darcyboy asked a sensible question and as usual the 'oldies v everything else' ' brigade have spoken. Those in doubt, get along to Bestwood, that is certainly across the board. It was'nt 99% oldies, in fact it was'nt even 60% oldies. it was a damned good mix of rare 60's, underplayed 60's, lots of 70's, a few classics and some very modern stuff. so yes, it was certainly 'ACROSS THE BOARD'
