  1. I am trying to get to the bottom of things regarding a soul 45. For this song "Pains Of Love" the composer is listed as "unknown". Please have a listen & let me know if there is an original of this song that you know & tell me who it's by so I know where they copped it from (if anywhere). Thanks. Those wooden boxes look like they will be pretty sweet. An alternative I have been using for a while is either toolboxes with the shelves removed or beauty cases with the compartments removed. Lockable, sturdy & smart looking. Below are a couple of pics closed & open of the two sizes I have & the last pic is two of the bigger ones after the latest 45 buying jaunt through the US. They are great to travel with as you can use the shoulder strap to free up your hands & they fit nicely under the seat in front of you on the plane. They are easily gutted of the inner shelves just by drilling out the rivets that hold them in place & then you are all set to go. Pretty cheap too, I think the smaller one was about $25 & the larger one was around $50.
  3. I rate Calvin Leavy, I don't think his credentials as a southern soul singer vs bluesman are really in question. I love his Soul Beat sides (they are usually a blues flipped with southern/deep soul) & of course "Cummins Prison Farm" on Blue Fox. I think that Downtown 45 is actually from the early 80s, maybe 1981/82....... Actually I just checked my copy upstairs & it has 1980 on the label around the rim with the label address. It is the same as the one on ebay right now. Not his best IMO (I'm not big on late 70s/80s stuff) but it's ok. Does sound like late OV Wright a bit. Is Leavy still in jail?? I've never seen the LP that I can remember.

It has been reissued but the original isn't even that rare, there's one on ebay now for $14.99 buy it now.

How the hell do you remember things like this??

Yes definitely a pressing plant/label stock variation issue unless demo/promo/dj is on the label, although confusingly they will get passed along as demos these days too. No big deal though.
  7. If you want to know what they're worth, actually do the legwork yourself, don't be lazy & expect others to do it for you without contributing. Man up & stop acting like a newjack, put the work in to acquire the proper knowledge. People on record message boards get real tired real fast of people just hit & running with cryptical "what are my records worth" posts. Sorry if this is harsh, but 99% of that list are common as records which you could have priced yourself without being lazy about it & fishing for a bite.
  8. Yes it's a great film, better than the Jacksons one IMO. I love the scene where the Ruffins are doing "Shout" at the Motown xmas party, killer, also the Speedos "Cadillac" at the start is fire.

Yeah he's credited as writer on the Joss Stone CD, there's no way they would have got away with omitting him. That Joss Stone album was all put up by the producers, Betty Wright etc. They are where all those songs came to Joss from. I saw her live in 06 & people were screaming for tracks off that album & she said "I haven't sung most of those songs in years, I don't even remember the words for any of them" in a cutesy voice & then proceeded to play stuff from her 2nd & 3rd CDs. I think the only Soul Sessions ones she sang were 2 of the singles "Fell In Love" & one other. It was pretty disappointing. Her backing singers also had a solo spot & waxed the floor with her

His best 45 is "I Got Some" on New Day, awesome drums. Funny how close Joss' version of "Super Duper Love" is to the original. I guess some tracks just don't need improving. ">
  11. Yeah, like I said Mancha just did that first 8th Day single which was really a 100 Proof LP track anyways. He then suggested his old singing partner Davis to H/D/H who assembled the "real" 8th Day group featuring Davis & others. As for the Glass House, anything is possible considering the incestuous nature of the groups on those H/D/H labels at that time. Maybe Mancha did do an uncredited lead on one of their tracks? I'll leave that for you to dig out & compare though
  12. You're thinking of the 8th Day, Mancha was the voice/writer on "She's Not Just Another Woman" (actually a 100 Proof LP track that was confusingly released as a 8th Day 45), their breakout hit, an 8th Day band was then assembled to capitalize on the hit but it didn't include Mancha as he was still with 100 Proof. I don't think he was ever a member of Glass House.
  13. Are you after prices?? There's not anything terribly $$$ in the list that I can see at a glance. The Quincy Jones is a good listen & is cheap to find, Spaghetti Head "Funky Axe" is a monster funk cut too but not as rare as it was once thought (I made a profit off a box of unplayed stock copies about 5 years ago), should be able to get one for $20 pretty easy. That list also contains A LOT of chud.
  14. Basically it's because over my many years of observations the whole UK soul collectors scene is kind of like a wang measuring contest where people aren't just satisfied with having a box of 45s that are worth an arm & leg, they also have to floss that they gave their 2nd born boy child to manship/moerer etc. Oh yeah, probably the charity shop thing too... It's all gouda though.
  15. Are you picking on me for one word?? How cool you are If it makes you feel better it's DEFINITELY find of the year for me.
  16. Cool, I like how it's a real obvious steal from "Open Up The Door To Your Heart". Probably find of the year for me.
  17. Has this been bootlegged or did I get incredibly lucky digging through the dollar bin this morning?

Practically anything on that small Action label will get you $$$, they just don't turn up, most of the titles are every bit as rare or even rarer than the SF TKO's on Ode. It's just that the TKO's 45 has a different flipside "Acid Lady" that went unissued in the US which makes it a more sought after release. The Jackie Lee is a consistent 70 pound 45 while the TKOs will run you considerably more than that. If you can find them.

I have a whole shelf of NZ pressed soul 45s. As far as prices go, I don't know, people from places other than New Zealand tend to go a bit nuts for them, but I can't seem to sell them to locals because we pretty much have them all . It is pretty facemelting the sides that got released here though. 90% of the pink Motown stuff is not very rare, but the sides released by "less famous" groups such as the Vancouvers etc. are tougher to turn up. I see a lot of Fame & Vee Jay stuff on the local Allied & Top Rank labels, Chess family stuff came out on the local Viking & then their own Chess label. There's James Brown stuff on a really beautiful white & red King label, as well as a more traditional blue/silver version. All the Brunswick stuff on a white & purple Coral label. The local Atlantic label had a great run of releases. Really it goes on & on, New Zealanders seemed to buy more soul 45s than Australians back in the day. Pretty much anything that's a little left of your usual top 40 soul stuff should get prices similar to or maybe a bit more than the OZ presses. There are also some real nice NZ EPs & a few great soul 45s cut by local New Zealand artists too. Billy Karaitiana's version of "Cool Jerk" on Festival is pretty great. As for the ones you found - the Jackie Lee on Action & the Darrell Banks on Stateside are not easy finds. Some examples that I had saved on photobucket
  20. Excellent news that this unmarked grave problem has been fixed. Apparently the benefit show in Memphis last week was great. OV Wright was such a talent. I was listning to his "The Soul Of OV Wright" CD the other week & really the man had so many great sides &a seriously great voice. One of the greats.
