Not at all Shane, I think thats the point, people over years have talked about Wigan being pop and its generally accepted Shane, so its good to discuss thatg openly. By the time I started going most of the pop stuff had dissapeared (except for one obvious culprit and even he wasnt too bad all the time) and I was mystified by all the talk of Wigan playing pop. Spot on, some interesting points here, unfortunately my boss has my nose to grindstone these days so cant contribute, have found things I agree and disagree with here, but definitely the point about Wigans last 2 years, I only started going last 2 years and for 18 months before end went nearly every Saturday, some times with half a dozen dancing on main floor, but it set my taste for life, some of the best music ever played (some still getting played) in those times. Hi there just seen your question, cant remember the exact address but if you head down to Bleeker St. its round there, just ask someone, there are a number of shops in that area (as well as gay book shops and gay sex toys shops so you may want to choose your shop), also a great album shop just round corner from house of oldies, very expensive but dollars good and owner can be a bit grumpy, and one called rocket science that sells a lot of the new reissues and some nice 70's stuff. Other option is grab a soho phone directory and they should be in there. Happy hunting. Jock

Didnt remember it with Searling but thats no surprise as these were my early days. Bernie was an interesting guy to say the least, he also found 2 Shadows on the rare label (Golden Sounds?) in Levines collection, so a very rare record at that point and 5 copies, 2 on an unknown label all found at "bernies barn" in IL's collection. He invited me round to look at records a couple of times before I knew source and I never got round to it, realised my mistake years later when I heard the stories from Guy and Kebs visits! Well remembered re Daybreak, my memory wrong again Re Gary that rings bell re the footie but Dean meets up regularly these days, unless its one of Deans imaginary friends, which would not surprise me knowing Dean (No grassing me up on that comment Kitch or Byrnie!). Nice thread, in my days as Allanton last hour dj (Jim knew I was certain to clear everyone out before the end) I must admit I indulged myself and played some very slow stuff not just as enders, despite maximum heckling from Glenrothes posse. However 1st year ender was always Esther Phillipsor OJays, like every nighter at that time, decided to be a bit different and played 4 Tops - Ask The Lonely. Actually went down a storm and is it probably in my top 1 it fair warmed my heart! Cheers Jock

Interestingly this is one of the last records I played before giving up my reluctant dj act. even more curiously at the 100 club also some point in late 80's. Didnt go down too well the few times I played it elsewhere. This was one of 3 discs I bought in one night supplied by Andy Whitmore in the crossover vein that Andy was championing long before the term was invented (just to bore you further the others were Bernard Smith on Spectrum and Mr Nightingales fav Masterpiece, nice haul) another of great taste and influence on lots of people was Andy, glad to see he seemed to go down well at recent Manchester, well worth the plaudits. Yes at least that, certainly Colin had this, got of Jim Wensoira when he was selling covered as Gene Mcdaniels I think, Jim had only played it a few times, became a monster for COlin, same time as Kim ?? Halo Tony, No surprise there, man of immpeccable taste, not the most soulful record maybe but proper Northern, Gilly was so influential, not surprised as usual to see him not getting the credit he deserves. Christian you should try and meet Gilly sometime, it might help you understand Northern Soul a little better. This is a strange label, I have a Might Sam 45 which looks fine, but also a William Bell Marching Off To War that was on Stax and would have no reason to be on this label, also did a very boot looking 45 of Drifters _ Gotta Pay Your Dues not appear on this? Any ideas ? Cheers Jock

I was just about to come back and say I think it may have been the Vonnetes! For confirmation try the anoraks corner website, sure he will have it listed there. Just dug it out for a spin, sounds good again, not my normal type of Northern thing but always think its got some ooomph i it. Flip it over, quite liked this side also in an offkey sort of way!! Thats interesting Andy, chatted with Colin over this also as thought Jim O'Hara had this first, he didnt really dj though so times are all mixed up in my mind (wonder why ). Do definitely remember though Ron Murphy telling him it was tape only, another myth blown!! Jim also got the Metros cut off RM, this was due to come out on Murphys Gold Soul I think, take it that and the Deon Jackson were from different sources then, always assumed the same.
