Lost Soul (Raven)
Jack's a good pal, and a mine of info regarding local Va garage bands including soul influenced ones; his article and contributions from Steve Calfee will also be appearing in my next book on southern soul rarities around Christmas time or just after.

Doug Tanner, 1960S North Carolina Producer
Cheers. I was aware of the Sam and Bill link (kind of why I was asking in part). John and Fred Tanner (brothers, or all one and same?) were apparently session musicians at the Greensboro NC sessions on "I'll Try" and the other Decca tracks along with Little Mac (aka Willy McDougal aka Billy Mack). Would love to know more about what Doug Tanner +/- John +/- Fred were / is all about.... Like the Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde angle, beginning to make sense. And Tanner and Coffman enterprises - who was Coffman?

Writing On Label - Not Always A Bad Thing
This was a weird thing. I was writing the chapter on the Novas Nine for "It's Better to Cry", had just interviewed Brian Mann, one of the founder members and writer of "Pain" / "Why Listen". Next day I picked up a copy of this 45 on Heritage (rarely pops up unlike the ABC mixed version), which had a message to an old ex-girlfriend written on the label by Brian all those years ago...

Rockmasters Question
I've got rhe 45, the vocal seems ok to me but there is a high pitch background noise in the mix, almost like feedback which doesn't seem so bad when played out

Rockmasters Question
Any Frank Guida / Norfolk Va experts here? Always frustrated me this: I know the Rockmasters were Frank Guida's Norfolk Va outfit (and "Raining Teardrops" was penned by Guida and partner Joe Royster). I assume, but don't know for sure, that the session musicians who originally made up the Church Street Five played on this (I know who they were and have tried to track them down but most if not all have now passed away to ask), but any clues as to who the vocalists were? And as an aside the Rockmasters - Sapphires similarity in parts - any possible connection or just mere coincidence? Did Guida / Royster have any connection with Swan or credited individuals on "Who do you love"...

Tricky on this I guess - for the styrene, would say vg++ no scratches, no scratches no hiss and plays without fault. For the label maybe a vg for WoL and sticker on flip. So vg+ overall?
