The Tommy Bass 45 is superb.....bit of a 'funk scene' oldie, but sounds just as great today. Great tune!

Lyrics could do with a pep-up in a perfect world, but it is a 'dance' record after all, not an angst ridden song about 'love' or his 'baby'. Not sure as to how you would think this (rather complex) arrangement is s**t*. Unless you prefer things simpler, which is cool....less is more, and all that.

Pretty simple lyrics, but powerful dancefloor material IMO. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41SvuvWeAjE

    Really sad, news....R.I.P. indeed.
  14. PM'd you, mate....cheers!
  15. Thanks alot for the comments, Dean.....glad that you're diggin' the comp. Really pleased with how it turned out, complete with Chris Menists thorough sleeve notes. I managed to squeeze in 4 gospel cuts on Saturday, two of which were first time spins......brilliant to see the dancefloor respond so positively!
  16. Ha, that's great Steve! I've never actually owned a copy on Wand.....is it the same mix as the Mascot 45, just picked up for wider distribution?
  17. Yeah, I wouldn't say that the BPS is one of the rarest.......but definitely one of the most desirable. I thought maybe we could have gone for the Keith Barrow cut which hadn't been on 45 before, but to get 'Trouble's brewin' for the first time on the format, backed with such a solid track by BPS, makes for a nice package.

I'd say it's not predominantly a funky soul night, but it's one of those great events that can move across various genres under the 'soul' umbrella, and still have an appreciative, full dancefloor from opening the doors til the lights are up. Thoroughly enjoyed last night, so I'll probably get my playlist together for people to critique.

At a guess, I'd say there were a coupla hundred people through the door @ Bristol last night, maybe more.....and those people without doubt voted with their feet. Just because they're not discussing it on a forum page, doesn't mean it isn't happening. I've not contributed to this thread cos it always feels like you're flogging a dead horse on here when it comes to this topic.....a lot of people on SS will stick to the boundaries of the 'northern soul' pigeon hole, whilst I like to explore the much broader spectrum of 'soul' music. It's part of the reason I joined Soul Source.....it's not 'Northern Soul Source'.
