All Nite Long Album - Who's Got One?
OK so I have a copy of the first issue, I will post the number tomorrow. The first track ( Deadbeats ) does skip a couple of times. Can any one supply a track listening for the second issue?

All Nite Long Album - Who's Got One?
Was the Up All Night album ever re pressed? I had a copy when it first came out ( early 80's?) which I eventually gave to my brother. I got a second copy in the 90's from Roger Banks. I think he only charged a tenner, cover was the same and same blank labels. Played Charles Johnson - Never Had A Love So Good off it at the weekend.

Great Record Hunting Stories Anyone?
Back in May 2003 my sister in law and her hubby came to Canada for a holiday. Being another soulie naturally he wanted to go looking for records. I took him to local flea markets, Stardust Records in Hamilton, Ontario etc and he was picking up bits and pieces on Motown, Brunswick etc. all good 5 quid stuff. He kept on he wanted to go to Toronto to look and I said 2 words to him - Martin Koppell. It is amazing how many times I have made contact with people about soul 45's and they say - Oh Martin bought them. Anyway, I took a day off and we went to Toronto, I had done some research and had a few shops for him to visit not expecting to find much, we got to about 4:00 and we were coming back down Yonge Street ( right in the city center ) and we were stood on a corner whilst I made a call. He looked across the road and there was a little door and through it you could see 45's glued to the steps - honest. We went in, went upstairs and there was this guy in leather trousers and a pony tail, ( he had a shirt on as well but I cant remember what that was like ), I kid you not, there were 1000's of records in there. " What time do you close", I said. "10:00" he said. I called the wife and said we would be a bit late. We started looking and there were lots of soul, r&b etc but mostly 70's and 80's. We were pulling out bits and pieces and he said we could go through the back as there were more there. I was finding Major Lance - Can. Epic, Motown on Canadian labels, then I found Linda Lloyd on Canadian Columbia!! Anyway, about 4 hours later we both had healthy piles of vinyl and I was lucky enough to have found as well as the Linda LLoyd copies of Moses Smith - Cotillion promo, Drifters - Pay Your Dues - Atlantic promo, plus lots more Atlantic, Atco, Cotillion promos, Ronnie Love, Nino Tempo, Robert John on A&M, . My brother in law had been off the scene for long time so didnt know half the stuff I was picking out but he was very happy with what he had and the cost was only $2 Canadian per 45 ( less than a quid ). I ended up spending $180 for 90 odd 45's, the guy even rounded the price down. I have been back a couple of times but the stock hasnt changed and the last time I went in October it was closed and there was a for lease sign in the window. I called the estate agents but they couldnt give me a contact number but when we were in the back room there was a bed so I am thinking he was living there as well. So there you go, not a major find but enough to keep you making the effort to keep looking and this was in down town Toronto and was about 15 minutes walk from Martin Koppells shop.

Kent 6t's 100 Club Anniversary Singles
As an exile in Canada I try and buy all the anniversary 45's, mainly because, as has been previously stated, they contain previously unreleased tracks. Having said that I am a bit reluctant to pay 60 quid ($130C) for this years. As an aside, I also have all the Kent 45's as well!

Charades On Harlem Hitparade

Strange Goings On At The Post Office
It happens in Canada as well. In May I lost about $450US in cash and Bidpay payments. One of the buyers contacted Bidpay and they confirmed his payment had been cashed but couldnt confirm where. I got absolutely no joy from Canada Post ( you think the UK post is bad, you should try dealing with these clowns ). I now have a Paypal account and the disclaimer that people send cash, money orders or Bidpay at there own risk.

Brett The Northern do's were done by Kev Cox, Alun Bell, Mick and another guy. I cant remember his name but I did bump into him at the Funk Bros show in Toronto earlier this year. They died a bit of a death a couple of years ago and Kev tried to get them going with a couple of young mods but like the one you went to they kept moving venues etc. Unfortunately at the last one we went to the DJ was spinning a Supremes tune and my missus went and asked him to play some northern and he said he was. My missus is not known for her tolerance, she likes her oldies and she said she didnt drive up to town, pay a fortune to park to listen to the F#@cking Supremes, and funnily enough that was the last one we went to!!! Kops Collectibles is OK, he used to have all the Northern in a seperate section but now it is lumped in with a the other soul stuff and covers the whole of the back wall and is a real bastard to pile through Jaime I do OK, I never thought I would be finding as much Northern as I am. I sold pretty much my whole collection before I came to Canada 5 years ago but am now building a decent one again. The stuff I sell on ebay is mostly cheap and cheerful oldies, motown etc to fund trips to the record shows. There are lots of record shows in the area, they run all through the summer, and a couple of guys hold soul stuff for me and that turns up a few things - my prime example would be Paris Blues on Canadian Polydor !!!!!!

Guides Again
I live about 30 mins outside of Toronto and it amazes me that nobody here seems to have any clue about the price of 45's and I would say they have never heard of the Manship catalogues. However I have noticed that a couple of sellers are now charging $5 instead of the $2 -$3 they were charging me a couple of years ago but I just put that down to the fact that I buy a lot of 45's and they feel they can "overcharge" me. There is one guy who is a bit savvy but he still only charged me $100C for a Jan Jones - less than 50 quid. Is this a bargain? The down side of this is that when I talk to dealers and sellers at record fairs about soul 45's they all come out with the classic line - I sold them all to Martin Koppell. So I suppose I am saying that the bargains are still out there - keep looking.

See This Record Here
One has just been listed on ebay and has a bid of $99.99 at the moment. What would be a realistic value, it is on Manships web site for 75 quid. I do have a copy which I would consider letting go if the offer was right, email at knew@branttel.com

Del Larks
I have to say I was one of the ones who got Arthur Freeman for $20. There was quite an interesting exchange of emails once he found out what they were really worth but fair play to him he did send it in the end.

Knock Your Socks Off
Just got ( yesterday at the Toronto record show ) mint copy of Robert John - Raindrops - A&M for $1 canadian, also Freddie Houston - Chills and Fever - Regency and 2 45's on the Holiday Inn label from the same dealer for $1 each. Can anyone give any info on the Holiday Inn label, both 45's are decent soul but not Northern. Total purchases were 68 45's at an average of $2.50 canadian each!!! Acouple bought blind were filed under B for Bin but lots of nice stuff.

Wanted - Freda Payne Lp
Mary Saxton album is actually on Birchmount label - picked one up for 50c Canadian last year. The Losing Control track was released on a 45 on the Pace label which I believe is from British Columbia. Manship sold 1 not long ago and I seem to remember Kev Cox saying he had a copy. newer04

Records That Changed Your Life
For me it was Little Piece Of Leather - Donnie Elbert. There was a family at the end of the street called the Blakes who were skins. I used to hang out with one of them and they had all the Ska, Motown etc. Up until then I only had pop and one of the Motown collections. Some months later and I was buying my first Northern tune, Van Dykes - Save My Love For A Rainy Day on a pressing from The Watson Hall All-dayer in Tewkesbury. Happy days
