  1. Sadly I no longer have any evidence of The Levine must go shirts etc, Back around 76ish myself and an old mate Dave Holland,(Who passed away a few weeks ago)R.I.P We had black cap sleave T-shirts made up and wore them on the stairs opposite the Dj booth at the Manchester Ritz all dayers,When Ian Levine was Dj-ing,remember it to this day, Large white letters on black T-shirts "Funk Off Levine" Remember when we had them printed the girl in the shop asked us what a Lee vine was Grant

I listen to Andy Peebles show most weeks and the quality of some of the records/tracks is always very good, Remember Andy Peebles from his Piccadilly 261 shows in the 70's,He moved to Radio 1 later,But good to have him back on proper radio Grant

  4. Not for me Webby, just a good tune, and by the way the song my wife (knowing my love of Ns) chose for our dance at our wedding,Lesley my wife was a real rocker Bon Jovi fanatic,And she let me have Jimmy Radcliffe for our wedding dance,Bless her, And back to the thread Ns songs that made you clap,(I bet you did) Grant

Look in freebasing Richard finished about 3 weeks ago, They now play a motown show (north west) not bad really but only Motown,Don't know the Dj's name but he plays a few good tunes, nothing earth shatering though, best to listen after 22.00 for Andy Peebles soul train,he plays a few Northern tunes but loads of other good soul tracks,Played last night a Smokey Robinson version of The Jackson Five "I Want You Back" totally diferent version and on Smokeys new album(give it a listen) Grant

  10. 11. Just reading some of the posts above and I still stand by my original posting,I want to go out and be Entertained, not to sit there and wondering if something I know will get onto the decks at some point,Once again this is not a go at the newies/oldies or modern soul or anything like that,The thread starter was asking the question of "Why Do Dj's lie" Not should a Dj play oldies all night or just play newies and hope for the best,The records requested sounded ok to me,Would you have played them? Well I would have, Stop the elitist rubbish and start to smell the coffee,If a promoter of any venue hires a certain Dj for any certain venue,If the said Dj does not come up with the bacon then he/she will not be booked again, end of story, This thread is starting to become another oldies/newies/modern/elitist thread and the original question was about a few tunes being requested and a certain Dj who I may add do not know who this Dj was not playing a record for a paying customer Entertainment is Entertainment, you pay your money and take your choice, Maybe the starter of this thread after travelling quite a few miles to a certain venue may choose in the future,to go somewhere else, After all she's only a punter who payed her entrance money, what does she know?????????? Grant
  12. Just looked at your last venue thing Heywood One of the nights I mentioned in my post was at Heywood(live in Bury) Asked for Afternoon of the Rhino, I can't play that said a well known Dj they wont dance to that anymore, He plays it Dancefloor RAMMED could not move The case M'lud was done and dusted, Grant
  13. Don't really agree with the last quote, A Dj is indeed there to entertain us,because we as paying customers want entertaining, If the said Dj was having a bummer of a night,He or she would be praying for requests,to help them get out of the shit they are in, No dancers at a Northern venue to me means the wrong music selection,ie playing what they think is good and bugger the punter because They the Dj(not all of them)think that they are there to educate us not to entertain,Which is what they are being paid for!!! Many if not all the people here on SS are really quite well versed in soul music,And like to hear records that they know, not to say they(we)dont like to hear something we havent heard before or had forgot about, A Dj's job is to Dj not play god, I have on various occasions been to soul nights, where the Dj in question as been on a personal crusade to educate the punters (us)only to kill the night by playing stuff people don't like or don't know, Of course I would'nt know what record request refusal started this thread,She may have asked for the Bay City Rollers or Third Finger Left Hand,But then again it could have been any of the thousands of Northern Soul records we listened to as kids and grew to love, There is another thread on here called"Are some Dj's on an ego trip" Well yes maybe some are!! Grant
  14. The first I recall spending more than .75p on, was an Emi Disc copy of the Pointer sisters "Send Him Back" it also had "Night Owl" on it, I got it off some Dj from Huddersfield at the old Radcliffe civic hall(not the new one that does the nighter)Friday night disco and it cost me £5, Not a lot of dosh really but if you think that my first weeks wage was £7.50,A lot of wonga for a 16 year old Grant
  15. The theme from Mahogany(damm my spelling) also known as "Do you Know where you're going to) That was a nice song I also liked Stevie Wonder(Sir Duke) The Originals "Down to love town)Although it was played in certain Northern Soul venues at the time,In my ears only I may add it was a New York disco track, much favoured by the (Mecca) girls and boys Grant
  16. Never liked "So is the sun" and I still dont, many of the tunes mentioned above I don't like either,But then agian who am I to comment on other peoples musical likes or dislikes,Did it once on here, you would have thought I'd killed someone, A lot of tracks I used to think FUNKY are'nt anymore,But then again as a 16 yr old(back in the days)Loads of tunes where FUNKY, I just did'nt get "them" at the time, Listen to them now though and like them, FUNKY tunes to me as a kid were The Originals "Down to love town", Brass Construction "Ha cha cha",Fat Larry's band "Center city",Barbara Pennigton "24 Hours a day",The french fries "Dance a ala music",Even Car Wash I thought was FUNKY, The reason behind the above mentioned tracks being FUNKY, Was the Blackpool Mecca crew invading the Ritz in Manchester,All wearing plastic sandals, skin tight pants and Mohair jumpers, and all dancing together(well I say dancing)just walking backwards and forwards holding hands behind ears, Anyway call me old fashioned if you like This post as been re-read by the poster, And no intention to imply that the above mentioned are or where dickheads, But as the old saying goes "If the cap fits" I'll get slated for this one Webby Grant

  23. I remember reading an article a few years ago about the group Belle and Sebastian, who are into NS,They said that they loved going to Northern soul nights because apart from the music it was the only time they had ever heard a Dj talk and introduce records apart from the radio, On a personal point If it's worth hearing it's worth a few words to talk about, label, producer singer etc. Grant
