Play Something Special
Just reading a few of the selected tracks and some bloody good ones I may add, It bought a smile to my face thinking of the Darby and Joan club for all us oldies(yes there are a few of us out there) Im 50 next week, can you imagine what our grand kids will say when we are all 70 odd yrs old,at the D+J dancing to old Northern tunes instead of now when the pensioners dance to the foxtrot etc "Come on love he's playing a bit of Motown, never mind the zimmer,or your bad back we can still do it" Yes I know plenty of you youngsters reading this will say it's like that now at some soul nights, but it will be you sooner than you think, KTF Grant

Contemporary Sounds At The Casino
Yep mate I think you are correct, Did you ever hear the cover version of 24 hours a day by Nomad Nomad spelt backwards is Damon A mid or early 90's dance tune, The Damon in question is Damon Rochefort who is now the writer of Coronation Street, That could be a good thread, singers etc who did something else etc etc etc Grant

Contemporary Sounds At The Casino
Giz a break Webby, I classed the above tunes as Mecca / New York Disco sounds,I did like Thelma Houston,But not a patch on Harold Melvin, I should and would have included Seventh Wonder in my Northern Soul tracks you love to hate but I had forgot all about it, Fat Larry was a good disco track, I would add to your list though with Barbara Pennington -- 24 Hours a day The Originals --- Down to love town Grant

Sitting In The Park - Billy Stewart Or Georgie Fame
What a wonderful post to read. I stand up and give you three cheers,Top post ever In my opinion, I have in the past in various posts,Stated the money equasion in the Northern Soul genre, And have been slated (for want of better words),For asking or putting forward the question of dosh, Did any singer or song writer, record or write a song hoping it would be a failiure, No I would have thought they wanted the song to be a hit,and if it was would if luck had it's way be covered by who ever where ever Georgie Fame,The Hollies,The Beatles,The Rolling Stones and many many others covered what we would call Soul singles,And with each cover came more money for the writers of those songs,And also many peoples first memories of certain songs, Um Um Um Um for instance how many people heard the Major Lance version first,or did they hear Wayne Fontanas version,Sandie Shaw"Always something" or Lou Johnson, Chicken or the egg Grant

Anyone Who Misses The Uniques Atmosphere Of The Casino
Apart from the sounds, ankle deep piss in the bogs, never any bog roll to wipe your arse on or if there was it was pissed wet,the condensation dripping all over you,the record sellers in the back bar, crates full of empty pop bottles, walking out in the morning when the sun hit your eyes going down the stairs, having "nightshift"stamped on your wrist if you went out for a few minutes,Wondering if Mrs Woods would let us in(nevermind the doormen),The walk back to the train station in the morning listening to our cassette tapes of the night before, The one thing I remember most about "The Casino" was the feeling of being a part of it all, No nonsence never any agro that I ever witnessed anyway, I also now thinking about it remember the bar upstairs on the balcony,Right hand side, selling the weakest ever milky cups of tea,and really shite meat pies Ah memories (cue song) Grant

Which Black Artist Paved The Way
With reference to Al Jolson, I grew up listening to him my dad was a Jolson fanatic,Still have a few Jolson albums left by my dad, Dad said to me years ago that Al blacked up to let the mass audience listen to black music,As it was not the norm for this type of music to be heard in the mainly white oriented white, clubs / radio stations of that era, So not a coloured artist,I believe he was a promoter of music from a black origin, Maybe wrong,But only my personal opinion. Grant ps If my dad said it then so it is Rip dad
