Memories Of The Casino
I did unfortunately,The meat pies where all soggy at the bottom,Not with the gravy from the pies,I think they just chucked them in there and hoped the heat from the punters would cook them, Remember getting piss week cups of tea from the upstairs balcony bar, A real vivid memory of mine is the stacks of empty Coke bottles in crates in the record bar getting bigger and bigger as the night went on,It was a wonder there was room for anyone in there at the end of the night, Most of the normal things also remind me but they have all been done before (The queues,The doormen,The greasers coming out before we went in,Mrs Woods,The bogs) The main things that I look back on now and it just captures it all for me was not The Casino but the build up to Saturday night,Working all week at the Paper mill for next to nothing,Coughing up my Dosh to my mum for my board at home and wondering if I could afford to go,Or would I have to miss paying Burtons for my leather Bomber jacket, Meeting up with my mates in the "Golden Grill" cafe in Radcliffe for a cheese burger,The bus ride to Bolton,Once at Bolton hundreds of other folk all in the queue for the same bus,Top deck spark up a fag and on goes someones tape recorder,The bet on who would see the Deane Parrish church first? May seem a bit boring to some but when I think of Wigan it's those times I think of that bring back such happy memories, It was all part of the experience for me, They would send you out on "Team building" courses nowadays to try gain what I got from my Casino days

Wigan Again
It was mentioned in Blues & Soul and possibly Black Echoes at the time, I remember reading it, The term Disco a shortened form of Discotheque was used a the time to describe a place used for dancing to recordings of music,Played by Dj's and not performed by live artistes The term now relates I believe to be anything played at Wigan Casino,But only by people who never went to "The Best Disco In The World " Grant

Your Top Three D.j's Ever
Heard a story that Russ had a copy of Yvonne Baker "Didn't Say A Word" on cameo parkway( i Think ), And that Ian Levine didn't believe it so he went to the Casino after the Mecca had closed, And he stood by the stage all night waiting for it to be played,Only to jump up on stage to see the label had been covered by a beer mat, I think that without a doubt they hated each others guts Grant

Your Top Three D.j's Ever
, Drugs or not Mr Webb you would still have danced,And don't try and say you would not have, Pisses me off this "Anti Winstanley" thing, You I and 70% of the people on here never slagged him when we went to Wigan,And the other 30% would have slagged off Colin Curtis or Ian Levine,And you know that's the truth,Because we all did it !!!!!!!!!!,

Your Top Three D.j's Ever
Not wanting to cause argument at all, Why no mentions of Russ Winstanley, Played many a fine tune at the Casino,O k he played some shite ones also,But so did many others But back in the day!!! , If you went to the Casino in the mid / late 70's ,Russ played a big part in your life, Never mind all the sell out bollo**s, If you went to the Casino during that time 50% of the records we danced to where played by Russ Winstanley, Did he discover them all?,Not a chance, Did you give a Shite.?Not a chance, Did you dance??? YES WE DID Music is in the ear of the beholder Grant

Tunes You Love, But Know You Should Not
Always loved instrumentals, Me and an old mate started a mobile disco in 76,It was called "Astral Trip" Remember driving the van onto Birch services on the M62 one Sunday morning and a load of lads and girls who must have been on the way home from the Casino started cheering when they saw the Astral Trip name in the window.

Would There Have Been A Northern Soul Scene
Really good thread this, Many of the points raised I really agree with, I'm 51 this year,So not as well versed on this subject as many others on Soul Source, I believe that without the Motown input in the 60's and 70's,The Northern scene as we know it would not be, Yes there are many other labels that produced some fantastic tunes and artists And I'm not educated enough to start naming them,Where not these artists / Labels not influenced by the Motown sound,Either commercially or musically, It was the Motown sound that gripped me,And led me into Northern Soul

It will be an age old argument Went to the Mecca a few times as mentioned before it was a bit to "New York" for me, Started at Wigan in 75 LOVED IT, Many people who went before or after to the Casino will have their own views on it, The mod / ska bit etc I didn't witness so I can't comment Grant

Russ Winstanley
I saw this play at the Contact theatre in Manchester a few years ago and Russ was Dj in the downstairs bar area,He attended the show and then did another spot later on after the play had finished, I would presume he didn't turn up uninvited,With a box of records hoping to get a spot
