  1. Agree with you except for the film - It was not a money making venture, it was definitely from the heart, although one could argue, is trying to capture ‘our thing’ on film worth even trying? I think Elaine did a fantastic job, and captured it as best as anyone could have dreamed of. As I said, I agree and understand your statement. ‘Northern Soul was never supposed to be cosy’. It will never have the same buzz that it once had for me, but I am determined to enjoy the pockets that are left All the best, Len
  2. The Wellingborough Soul Club Final Night at The Embankment Club
  3. The Wellingborough Soul Club 3rd Anniversary at The Embankment Club 1997
  4. I just told my member of Staff about this, he said......."F*ck me, it's worse than Crack!" ........ Len P.s - Great record, but I would prefer to buy Sandy Golden (If I won the lottery)
  5. Great post, take it as a compliment Dave - That's what gets me through! Len
  6. Cheers Chalky. Staying in with the kids tonight - It's great!.....Just hope Nina and I make it until Midnight Happy New Year to you. Len
  7. It goes back to not everyone knows what others do, and I think it's silly to write off anything that has been played before for the sake of the true meaning of 'cutting edge'......actually, what is the true meaning of cutting edge? I thought it meant somewhere different from an out and out Oldies night, trying to push boundaries whilst keeping a great atmosphere - Giving folk a good time (The fine balance) I heard The Dream Merchants both at Burnley, and The Wilton - I see both venues as cutting edge (my understanding) Len
  8. I think I've reactivated this thread! To answer an earlier post - This thread is about Stanky, and the point being that yes, it's only an 'ok' record, but was played to great effect - The Dream Merchants also only an 'ok' record (and I won't shout about Ritchie Havens) But all did work for some reason.........Maybe it was the Chocolate Liqueurs...... .......Christ, I think some of you lot put the music above having a good time Len
  9. You're not wrong It's just my opinion that to include some good reactivated tunes, and a few great oldies is a positive addition to a cutting edge night (helps the atmosphere) Ok, I can except you don't want any 'great oldies' at a cutting edge night because you know those, and defeats the object - But do you welcome those tunes that are only known to very few people? Some of them will be new (cutting edge) to various people. Len P.s - I suppose your argument is that doing so waters down the whole meaning of cutting edge (which is a fair point)
  10. Doh! ...Now edited.......I give up Len
  11. Hi mate, Out of interest, would you have welcomed my maybe a 3rd reactivation of 'The Dream Merchants' at a Cutting Edge' venue? Surely something like this has a place as so many people didn't know it - If we didn't reactivate records some would disappear without being used to their full potential. Len
  12. No he said Butch played it Covered up - The chap that rang Paul Donnelly said it was also covered at Stafford as 'Walter And The Admirations'. Chalky will confirm - Not that important, but interesting to know. Len
  13. No need to be sorry for disagreeing - We will 'agree to disagree' here, because I am a great believer in 'light and shade' - Look at the effect of just that in 'The case of Stanky' 'Cutting Edge' through the 80's would have been as you describe it, but my view is that it had to change slightly or the new records would run out - I see it as giving it a new dimension, and let's face it, when a great oldie is whacked on it can give the night a real 'boost' Old and New compliment each other. Len
  14. I did, and apparently Butch did years ago - Chalky can confirm if this was the case. All good fun Len
  15. This is a very serious matter....... All the best, Len
  16. Ok mate - That leads us to the main point of the discussion. I never claimed to have discovered it, this was a reactivation (probably a third one at that) Just as Terry says about Fred playing Stanky - He played it with 'impact', and got such a reaction to it, people are still talking about it years later (Well done that man) Btw, did Butch also cover up 'The Dream Merchants' as Walter And The Admirations? (That coincidence could easily have happened) Len P.s - Chalky, do you laugh when I try so hard to be 'cutting edge' just before you tell me it was played at Stafford for the umpteenth time?! .....To me 'Cutting Edge' is keeping things interesting (reactivations being an important part)
  17. Head on the block time….but I hope these examples help. I had ‘Herbert Hunter - Push Away From The Table’ (The other side to ‘I was Born To Love You’) covered up in the nineties (I ‘championed’ it) Butch actually asked me about it at The 100 Club after Bob Hinsley had raved about it - I remember being absolutely mortified (Who was I to start covering up records?!)……”What’s this Cover Up on Spar you’ve been playing Len?”……I honestly thought he was taking the p*ss out of me - I immediately ‘crumbled’, and very awkwardly told him what it was (bracing myself for ridicule) …..I was then gobsmacked when he smiled, and replied…..”Good for you mate, keep it covered up, it’s all psychological”….I actually needed confirmation, and said.....”Really?”……”Yup”…….My ‘Audience with Butch’ had timed out - Great stuff …….I did appreciate his reassurance though as it helped me to further understand the art of D.Jing (I’ll get there one day) ‘The Dream Merchants - Stop You’re Breaking My Heart’ (Rennee) is also one of mine. I named that Cover Up after recognising the similarity. I then bought a further 6 copies (Covering them all up to create 'Mystery') and sold them to friends for £6.00 each (To get it ‘out there’) I remember The Banbury Boys telling me that my record was being played everywhere (I thought they were winding me up) A while back Paul Donnelly started a thread on it, stating….”I know this was played at Stafford covered up as Walter and The Admirations”….Carl Fortnum confirmed any doubts I had (after reading Pauls thread) categorically saying it was never played at Stafford (No disrespect to Paul, that was simply the information that he had been given) Who has the inspiration, and does the ‘work’ on a record does get lost sometimes, or confused with ‘knowing it first’….I think it is nice when it is remembered, and certain records get associated with certain D.J’s for this reason (etiquette) Two people playing the exact same record, can make it sound oh so different. Does that match up right with your point Terry? (I’m sure it does) One record may be associated with more than one D.J, which is absolutely fine if they were individually inspired (This could depend on demographics / or maybe how many times a record has been reactivated) All the best, Len P.s - This kind of information is inevitably going to be ‘sketchy’ / only known by some - Mo (of Mick and) had noted that I broke ‘Ritchie Havens - I can’t Make It Anymore’ at The 100 Club some years back (It was nice to know someone was listening, and remembered) P.P.s - I know compared to the ‘Ady Croasdells’ of this Scene, the above may sound a bit silly (I understand the person who sang the song played a pretty important part in this process Ady) But what Terry has highlighted is that ‘personal creativity’ is what is lacking sometimes.
  18. Cheers everyone - I'll look forward to more reading next year. HAPPY CHRISTMAS! Len
  19. What a tune! Just lovely Sorry no help in your search. Len
  20. Of course - I went for The Brothers Of Soul, and didn't expect the same I would get from a 'norman' Soul event - I went to see The Brothers of Soul live, and thoroughly enjoyed it Len
  21. That's a brave post - I agree (with respect to the artists).....I would go (have been) to events purely for the artist, but there is something to be said about keeping it separate - This does not take any appreciation away from the artist. Darrow Fletcher at The Wilton being a good example - I went to pay my respects to him. A long standing quote of mine......"I would prefer to hear the record played by Carl Fortnum!"...... All the best, Len
  22. Does that mean they have a place at a Northern event? .......I miss the modern rooms that were 'kicking' and attached to every Nighter I went to in the 90's. Gavin page's Winsford Modern room was the bees knees All the best, Len
  23. Also why play lists can not show whether a night is good or not. All the best, Len P.s - You may have said this / or similar before Terry.
  24. What a great line! Not even a * in sight! Well done that man Made me cry with laughter - Thanks for that Len
  25. What it should be - One Scene. Um, sorry for butting in there Win Len
