  1. loads of stuff i ddint know in that one post, and toad, I know its maybe too big for a read on here, but I just thought soem of you nice guys might like to give me soem great anecdotes.
  2. Just listening to Rodigan on R2, and wondered if thee are many parrallels between the two genres, obviously the collecting and clubbing scenes but also the development and the progress of the music, Is dub the island equivalent to P funk for example? Dancehall and Rap? Lovers rock and what passed as indie soul in the 8ts? Seems to me like there's cross pollination between the two styles throughout the last 50 years, or am I talking shite again? I dont know all that much about island music, but I like loads of it. It was hearing Rodigan play the lovers version of 'I caught you in a lie' what done it!
  3. is this any better than cutting a carver then really???
  4. I'm up for the manny date too, missed him last time.
  5. some absolute shite and some top notch discoveries, but even the shite i'd would sooner of listened to than being stuck in M's
  6. thats a shit hot, spot on, post, as for the returnee's, and your observations are only about those who actually went to wigan, lot alone the hoards of wannabe's who only went to thier local youthy. nowt wrong with that, its just the attitude so many, 50 something, plastic soulies, bring with them, ie, 'I know what northern soul is!'
  7. The cheery tree pub in runcorn seems to ring a bell as a midweek nigth and the cheshire cat, mondays in nantwhich used to get rammed.
  8. yep that was it, in ednomton, I thought Ion was involved.
  9. Len I always thought you avatar was a cat drinking milk, lol. just took a look,
  10. anyone mentioned, southside soul club? Kev moore run it in Calpham, also remember going to a venue in the Angel islington, paddocks in holburn and I jamacan club in north londo, run by Ion.
  11. I've said it before but that clip helped got me into it! had just borrowed some tapes off my brother and then I saw that and thought I gotta go there, and the next year I did!
  12. I recall some grand times at Leighton Buzzard, Dunstable, and the Coventry nighters around 87/ 88.
  13. Christ I'm glad I can still go to places other than northern soul nights, LOL.
  14. its a really strange concept to me, people only dancing to records they know. and that's what northern has become, a record rather than a music based scene.
  15. no but that's where I got my taste for it too gary.
  16. Lets put it simply so all understand my opinion, the northern scene doesnt have a future, it will die out in the next 10 to 15 year, when all the 50 and 60 somthings who, in the main attend it are to old to go. Soul will continue to be played at a variety of clubs throut the country and indeed world, and may well bennifit from the death of the northern scene, lack of baggage ect. It be interesting to read any, so called traditionalist, defend how it can be maintined for any longer than that. The, at most 50, well meaning, retro obsessed kids that pass for the future of the scene.will not save it imho.
  17. first of all best thread on here on ages. Got to say that a great deal of the debate seems to be about expectations, there are the majority now who attend ns event to not only hear traditional northern soul all night, but also expect to here a really quite rigid selection of top 100 NS tunes. For these anything outside that expectation is a disappointment. There are others who are ready to except music outside that definition so long as its dancable and has a poppy, up, sound, look at examples like; tribute to betty, that shiting other tribute record!!!! urgh! and even the aforementioned vocal of double barrell. For anyone who's a little jaded of hearing the salvadors, again and, like me, is non to keen on the commercial sounding flavour of the month, what's a DJ going to play that would provide any interest whatsoever? I went to an event in stoke a couple of months, it was in a bar full of 25- 35 year old non soul scensters, LOL. I heard a local dj play an hour of classic northern oldies to an empty dancefloor, with not so much as a foot being tapped, Johnny Beggs stepped into the fore, whipping up a latin storm and well, all the girls got up and danced to 'use it before' ....' pow wow' , 'Willie Rossario' ect, he moved into R and B, hard soul and funk later, keeping them on the floor and where the girls are the lads follow. It could of just been timing but I don't think so, I just cant imagine Classic northern generating the level of interest Johnny's uncomprimising mix of styles did. I love Northern, it generates a passion in me that no other music can match and more importantly it was a gateway into a miriad of styles that I also adore. but Like paul if think the best nights are now 'off the scene' where others have that shared expectation of hearing exciting fresh tunes whatever there genre.
  18. well said you goit it spot on
  19. Yeah play some proper soul music, like holly st James, yeah right!
  20. I'm with you there Dave but almost darn't say it here, there some fanytastic stuff from the early 9ts and late 8ts, I'm spending on this stuff now while its stil dirt cheap, found some ace stuff in the last few months.
  21. I'm the other way, fed up with R and B, and want moore latin needed here
  22. A great starting place would be looking at a copy of the Northern soul top 500 book, I'm sure you'll find a host of tunes that have made in since the 'heyday'
  23. I did here a few grt island spins I didnt know at pow wow recently, but its not a northern night really.
  24. At some point tradition Modern , ( 7ts, 8ts) has got to find more favour on dancefloors. Traditional modern? now there's a contradiction in terms.
