  1. TRUST ME...IT'S BORING!!......or should we have a snap poll......RIGHT NOW??
  2. love the way you've segwayed it pete, richard couldn't have done it any better! some many memories, even for us in the west midlands...pointer sisters next mate, dean courtney, robin wilson, salvadores, baltimore and ohio marching band, eddie foster, edie robin, todays people, black nasty,....just a few eh?
  3. love reading these playlists paul...said that a number of times about rafa, likewise with our pinch brothers over in donny......looking forward to t'journey oop north in the spring...hopefully bringing a few different things to the table myself. great sets anyway,..mr. ackley ought to be making a name for himself....a "for millionaires only" collection to die for!
  4. yeah, i know that...but it has/is.....
  5. agreed, anyone who danced to that set would have justification in saying they were f***in knackered and well pleased....it's not a "white collar" issue is it?
  6. there you go, that answers other threads about cutting carvers and weather anyone should play them or not...if it's good enough for sam....i follow the ethic that if it's unreleased/from a cd or even an lp track...what is the problem, especially if the lp track has never coincidentally emerged as a single and probably never WILL.but, we'll carry on arguing about that on "the other threads" in the meantime, get those files back up mike
  7. well done dave, a considerable article about a considerable man, a "giant" in every sense of the term. with the greatest of respect to our terminology, "northern soul"...his terminology "sax break" is unequivical in the importance of our music...exactly what drove almost everything recorded in detroit, also has driven us. mostly, we easily associate his text book with "the middle eight" as has been said but, imho, i believe the record that he dominates the most, and is forever one of the greatest uptempo motown records of all-time is "something about you" by the four tops...you could not imagine that thunderous start without his machine gun staccato -like intro. speaking personally, my last introduction to the man's talent, was probably the last and most recent discovery that displayed his moniker...that being margaret little " love finds a way"...all of 12 years ago now..even in the new millenium his dynamism is still evident. you know we're all aware of how many number one hits the funk brothers played on, over 15 years, yet it appears that mike terry's influence and legacy is responsible, not only for the continued love of motown, but the adulation shared by millions of us for a myriad of stone classic northern soul gems that bear that charisma only he could magic out of his beloved baritone sax. i'm sure everyone will agree, that andrew "mike" terry sits proudly in a place of true honour within this hall of fame.
  8. apart from maybe the supremes stoned love, unedited lp version which has become sought after, been fetching £30-50 on occasion
  9. had a look at that karl,..not there from what i can make out, can you locate it?
  10. fabulous!.....that's coz i told him about the interest steve,..he obviously decided to have a sneeky look he is genuinely chuffed that there's so much interest...but then he also knows that he is still held in such high regard..imho. anyway, goes without saying..he can definitely still put a good 95% of that list together so don't doubt it if he says he will do it....wish he had judy hughes!!
  11. on the second photo, it looks like somebody's getting shirt lifted on the stage! not simon cuerden is it??
  12. more like "only fools and horses" dave!
  13. right!...so as there is absolutely NO DOUBT about this, i have it straight from the horses mouth, so to speak. "i don't like to lose" was discovered by john anderson, after which, richard immediately covered it up...this was 1978.....
  14. right about joe matthew.....i remember hearing it more than once in a night, played by richard of course!,...now it's conceivable you can hear it at least that many times at a lot of venues courtesy of a good few dj's...and it still packs the floor.
  15. despite the misgivings both here, and other sources, it's still very sad news of his passing. i'm sure all of us would share in jimmy''s family's sorrow and offer our deepest condolences. jimmy ruffin was truly a master of the heartbreaking lament,...he sure was also a purveyor of great dance tunes as well, as proven on the scene over the last 3 decades in particular via the vaults of motown.....we must all be grateful for their delivery, adding to his songbook....he must have been very pleased to know these lost tunes had finally been acknowledged, be it here. jimmy, your soul may rest in peace...but in heaven, your voice is making people waken with joy, Amen
  16. ive just read that as well, posted some 13 hours ago, but other posts on jimmy's page were saying otherwise. bearing in mind they're 4/5 hours behind us, has anything emerged this morning? or is it still too early?.
  17. agreed mike, so many people on fb have been jumping the gun now for over a month and really dosn't help matters as immediate family must be seeing this and find it deeply upsetting.
  18. just checked the soulful detroit forum and it appears that david ruffin jnr. has confirmed his passing but no major news outlets reporting on it yet...unless someone here has seen different...comments please?
  19. can someone please confirm if it is true that jimmy, who has of recent, been in a coma, has now in fact passed away?. there is a lot of conflicting talk on facebook which does not help matters and can be extremely distressing for people in general, let alone connected to family and close friends.
  20. ..and it's good to hear it, sir arthur, the fact is, good sets can still be heard all over the country and the quality of the rarities haven't diminished....it remains however, a fact that when a breath of fresh air was needed amongst the choking smog of pop with a 4's beat, richard restored the balance and the sanity, reminding people what northern soul stood for. i'm sure you, along with butch, adey, sam and a whole other bunch of devotees, will keep the fires burning for years to come.
  21. sorry bro, i'll have to dispute that....i went to the catacombs during that era, and i never heard it,...definitely not on a wednesday night and as for saturday's?, no chance....yes it was for the rarer stuff but if it had been in either dj's boxes at that time....we would all have heard of it long before wigan.
  22. awesome playlist pete...richard at his iconic best....i think we all dream that times like this could be had again...but a good many of you out there, lived that particular moment and can never have it taken away from you...it's possible to actually feel the atmosphere just reading the depth of the quality....a northern soul set to bring you to your senses amidst the banal pop infiltration and media attention, when truly inspirational soul music endured and shook you to your foundations. richard always believed in the truth, giving people the real deal, those latest discoveries, always moving forward, the quest never to rely on tried and tested oldies...he was always ahead of the field..and still knows how to do it now..
  23. how many guises did the locarno go under in the 70's? i can remember mick flello running it, chris king & terry sampson, and pep...anyone else have a go, and with what soul club name?
  24. are we talking birmingham locarno here?
  25. gonna say bro,...lookin' suspiciously like the matrix!
