Soundtrack - Northern Soul The Film
sorry, don varner is absolute quality, a proper gritty, raucous r n' b dancer deserving of it's inclusion in ANY capacity, and indicative of variation, keeping people guessing as to what's coming next, whereas a TOTALLY PREDICTABLE compilation would inflame the debate even more...wigan wasn't just a bout what we now determine as standards.....can anyone truthfully speculate as to exactly how many records were played at the casino over 8 years?,..and the styles were right across the board before anyone had even invented the term crossover...dosn't a compilation have the right to be less predictable?...in the confines of the film, we'll all see the soundtrack in a different light, music ALWAYS sounds better set to motion...perhaps then we can get over these petulant trivialities.

In Memory Of Fran
i'd expect a good many soulies on the scene have pics of her littering their albums over the decades, she was obviously a very popular figure. i can't confess to having met her but know of her via the documentaries she was fortunate to appear in, including most recently, the culture show's offering on bbc2...a true devotee and a standout person, a proper matriarch amongst the masses and a flower of scotland.....i hope that sums her up fittingly...may the lord rest her soul, r.i.p. fran x

Marvin Gaye Lonely Lover
this is what needs resolving then...lets have positive proof, a soundclip of the string arrangements
-
Marvin Gaye Lonely Lover
jan 28th is the first mix, though in the booklet notes to "the master", it is listed as "alternate mix", so that has to be a reference to the fact the string section had not been added. the following day, the studio must then have laid down the orchestration...i definitely want to hear this, but would it also be a fair assumption that the string version was utilized for the 1984 single release?. as an aside to this particular thread, i'm also trying to locate the alternate version of "you're wonderful"...recorded in 1963, this unreleased track also appeared on the aforementioned 4 cd book set, this cut has a bluesy, rnb feel to it with a horn lead intro....the archives show that it was remixed and appeared on a 10" acetate, dated for some peculiar reason other than a typing error, as 1968...i distinctly remember hearing this on a tape of one of richard's show for either sunset or red rose radio from back in the mid to late 80's/90's...about the same time that the jimmy ruffin tracks were being aired. this take has a percussion intro ( jack ashford ) sounding like a marimba or xylophone and with a more mainstream motown feel.....i would also like to acquire a cd of this as well if anyone can solve the mystery.
-
Marvin Gaye Lonely Lover
hi mick, so does that mean the second version has a string section added?
-
Marvin Gaye Lonely Lover
correct chalky, 28/1/1965, written & produced by holland-dozier-holland 10" acetate - version without strings

Billy Woods For Sale
i echo pete's sentiments about this record, huge in it's day and from a midlander's point of view, vigorously championed by PEP, a dj who amongst all his varied attributes, had a discerning ear for soulful tunes. yes, it appeared amongst a plethora of fine tunes, all surfacing, fortunately for us, at the same time/same era. indescribably rare, it dosn't deserve to be mocked as are the afflicted, the fact that so few of the big guns do not possess this record or simply haven't thought of the possiblities of a revival, is the only reason that it is not massive all over again. i would, however, hasten to add that the undeniable audible clicks from the auction item, really do not enthrall..i'm pretty much sure that even the undoubted wizardry of technician, OZZ, couldn't mask the obvious...say, at the king's..probably the only nice thing it could possibly be is to look at, to admire...for several hundred pounds?......

Things In Records That Make You Shiver
goosebumps?.....shivers down the spine??......there is ONE supreme hands down WINNER.....LINDA JONES, unquestionably, and without any shred of a doubt, THIS woman HAD IT ALL. not an octave on the chart she couldn't reach...coupled with THE genius that was GEORGE KERR, her contributions to soul music are nothing less than SUBLIMINAL!..we could talk for eternity about wonderfully dynamic orchestrations and the legendary and integral sax break that is the trademark of many historic northern soul records, but only ONE ARTIST can contrive a "vocal break", if such a thing exists...and that would lead all and sundry to conclude that i speak of "MY HEART NEEDS A BREAK", a song in itself that could easily have doubled for a blockbusting 007 soundtrack, when from out of nowhere, bursts forth, a mind blowingly sumptuous mini-aria that is breathtaking, yet not beyond the realm of a woman, mature beyond her years...she takes it in her stride with ease, pitched within the confines of kerr's heartwrenching lyrics. a true heroine of the northern soul saga, who seccumbed to diabetes, LINDA was taken from us, aged just 28 years in 1973, an incalculable loss in terms of her mastery of a meaningful song, her catalogue has no flaws, such was her very real greatness...had she lived, what price a performance on a stage in this country??.

Deon Jackson Dies
A truly great singer, an incomparable master of the art, an associate of an elite group of recording stars who ONLY ever made double-A sided singles.....vinyl worth playing out on any and every occasion. as every year passes, we mourn with increased intensity, the passing of so many icons whose invaluable contributions, have graced our scene and remain undiminished. more's the pity that his presence never touched our shores but we will be forever indebted to deon jackson for his wonderful portfolio of songs...that quite simply "make the world go round".
