  1. that is a serious f**k off tune!.....just wish i had the cash
  2. well, i also posessed this lp until just recently, when one mr. searling commendeered it!...it didnt register at first but he must have sniffed something happening or perhaps, quite innocently, had been looking for a copy for a while...but then again the man has immense taste....then WOW!, jm is auctioning a copy, rung richard to let him know, very surprised, but in essence why shouldnt it be...it has to be quite obscure and this one must also be mint as well as the sleeve. THE standout track though, is "get hep to love"...is this CURTIS or not?, this would be right up mr. mayfield's repetoire...covering it up? ok, from the point of view of not too many people knowing it, i wouldn't bother, even though i no longer have it, fact is these were a talented enough group without having to resort to cloak & dagger.
  3. well done bro, i just think it gives people a more realistic idea of what to expect, to know its not just about anthems & classics, but about doing what every other venue should aspire to, providing as wide a ranging choice as possible and every dj/collector who gets asked to play here, will have their own ideas about what fits.
  4. so cool ian, value for money & an education.....just want mr. maleedy's tunes and what paul spun in the back room and that will just about cover it and to those browsing, its a big thumbs up to ovo in a thinking man's stylee

big sigh of relief and cheers dave, very disconcerting for us and god knows if his family are aware of the unnesessary distress its caused. completely right bro, people MUST assertain the correct facts before posting, i believe there were several radio tributes lined up which had to be hastily withdrawn, it can only be emphasised that we are all relieved that chuck is ok, albeit not in the best of health, it would be good if we could get regular updates from stateside.
  7. steve jeffries has had one on his list for a while, its vg+ i think £150 has a crack thus cheap or you're looking at the higher value for a better condition copy

it would be considerably funnier, where it not also insensitive with hypocracy being unashamedly displayed, but what really angers me is the suggestion that someone, known to be a good dj and a regular supporter of gigs throughout lancs, who would like to get a shot at the aforementioned venue, dosn't get a look-in, yet other "good" djs get the nod and a wink just like that. sounds very much to me like "white collar" "mates" " yer face dont fit or i just dont like you". it suggests its figured that even though a person is known to collect, what he's got in his box isnt up to it....how can anyone be so judgemental?.....its also amazing how this unjustified inuendo is allowed to hijack the original thread...the like or dislike of the record..in that respect, as chalky say's quite rightly, it is each to his own...if we all liked everything we would be accused on mass, of tunnel vision. i had a listen to the soundclip on chris's site on thursday..its not bad, the name quarterman was instantly recognisable from his gsf outings but im totally unaware of any 60's substance, so, its a new one on me, but if its super rare, its gonna command a fee and there are those who figure it has potential or the financial risk wouldn't even be contamplated.
  9. another solemn occasion....such a gifted exponent, his fingertips laced with magic, that infused the sound of the city of brotherley love...and, as is the case with these alchemists, vince was churning out hit after hit over many decades, a true reflection of his resilience and the respect in which he was held by new artists who wanted that something special in their productions....so many clamoured for his talent and so many prospered under his wing. r.i.p. vincent montana...a true philadelphian father figure.

  12. i have to concur, its a moot point that perhaps he wasn't as well liked in some quarters, though it is speculation. he didn't live long enough for even the oldest of us to appreciate or get the feel of him...and he didn't visit these shores on that point, i don't think he ever would have done as surely the 60's would have seen his calling along with the rest and perhaps the people who he worked for didn't think the cost of sending an unknown here was worth the expense...its hard to swallow that, isn't it? but his untimely and somewhat grizzly demise is uncannily paralleled to that of Sam cook...perhaps HIS life concealed a dark, messy background that betrays the image of the clean cut guy with the melodic voice that captured the hearts of millions in his heyday. the only difference is, Darrell DIDN'T get the breaks, as has already been said. look...people like Garland green did survive and in a more accommodating 70's, where better understood and subsequently, got the chance to record, albeit in a more discofied manner for major labels....the dust settled on the 60's and a more level playing field gave the diehards a chance to establish theirselves...and many did. it would be nice to think that he could have given us a 70's legacy...with his voice, anything would have been possible.

sorry, but where's the story gone?......where the details correct or have we been misled?, on account of the fact there is no headline.
  14. phew!....just getting my breath back after browsing this one...two tip-top sets bro!
  15. chill out tunes?.....fabulous!, deffo looking forward to spinning the shiney, little black thingy's at this amazing venue...and people, get your heads screwed on right because this second room is where the thinking man's music is going on....never been anything wrong with broadening the horizons and getting a musical education...lea manor home from home for me whitsun bank holiday?.....BRING IT ON!!...oh, and there may..i say may, even be a certain dj from todmorden putting in an appearance.
  16. lezli valentine...great tune!...you'd think it would go against the grain in most sets, but it really is catchy for crossover and according to here, its getting played quite frequently.
  17. i have the hbr lp, i distinctly remember john vincent playing it at wigan, circa 74/75, though i wasnt aware of its format at the time. later, i picked up a copy of the version on deluxe at winsford nighter, thinking it was infact, the fast version...disappointed, but eventually got the one i wanted...as for the mispress, thats new on me...but only uncle ted could be party to such invaluable information!! great tune though, and really ought to be spun by more djs.
  18. this is a typical example of the time, motown & its artists showing a mutual respect for the songwriting of lennon/macartney. personal taste im afraid when it comes to the arguement of inferiority where the polarity is reversed..its different with "the sound" even if the songs are pop, whereas the u.k. offerings are the best they can be, given the circumstances of not having a bathroom converted into vocal booth...or even a snakepit...and the obvious fact, they're white folk trying to mimic a black sound. end of the day, lennon & macartney were good at what they did and they were as much original as any other prominent songwriters of our time. id guess that, even in his wildest imagination, if gordy had asked the duo to compose a song specifically for one of his artists/groups, they would have considered it an honour...and would probably got a hit out of it.
  19. here, here...i think that nails the arguement...his testimony, despite the label he created, was to trample on everybody to get to the top as quick as possible...from his artists, to his songwriters, producers, arrangers, technicians to the beloved musicians...without whom, he would not have had THAT sound. it cannot be stated enough how avidly engaged, pop stars in this country were with the sound of young america. im also pretty sure that the race card wasnt used here to merit their success with cover versions, be they inferior in most cases and dated now, unlike in the states, where barring the entrance of motown, black musicians were exploited. the might and meteoric expanse of the detroit label helped to sweep that aside to a large extent...but thats no excuse to forgive gordy for the ruthless way he got what he wanted.
  20. aqua-marine in colour with a red mapleleaf on, a 74 reissue i believe.
  21. great detective work again rob, you & rixy are like holmes & watson!. ive always had it drummed into me about great voices and jack montgomery sits alongside roy hamilton, ironic that they both had tragically short lives, the former moreso...should have been big stars...but to the northern scene they are and always will be.

great detroit again, ( he loves me )...love the "trivia" in inverted comma's....pronounced, the shal-fon-tays and a fab b-side as well. bateman & mosely seemed to get their credits everywhere in the 60's.
  23. watched it, suppose the hendrix lp had to be the big hitter as anything by him has always been collectable, but if you think about it, it dosnt even come anywhere near the first beatles lp...but thats pop music....OUR MUSIC is in the premier league of prices.
  24. well, ive just bought one, off the back of never having heard it before and, having investigated, viewed a genuine on jm im certainly not going to pay an arm and a leg when this reissue is completely legit. it is a good tune though and you can see why the mutt label has been in the spotlight just recently, some overlooked and underrated stuff on there as well as the jewell in the crown, dusty wilson.
