  1. If anyone can dig it out he is mentioned in a Frank Elson column in Blues and Soul, I seem to remember frank says Bill was a member at the Catacombs !!And well into the music at that time! It may have been in response to someone moaning about THAT line in Black Puddin' Bertha
  2. Go to the BBC 2 web site--sounds of the 60s--its 1 hour 19mins into the prog. The backing is a beat ballard type thing--the vocal is F***ing awful !! I didn't know it though Rob

I found 8 copies in Subway records in New York in 1979-it was being played by Sam as The Carstairs c/u-I actually owned the record as a new release purchased in Syd Booths from Phil kingswood around 1975 -always loved it-they are the same as the scan. ps dont forget about the UK Grapevine release as well Rob

Melvin Davis was drafted into the US Navy--did his basic training--except he could not swim--then had his "Shots" (vaccinations for posting abroad) But he had an allergic reaction to the stuff they used and was excused duty and demobbed!

As a regular there, I have several "early" photos which are really crap-as Parkash said 110 cassette film and a 2 watt flash !! in 1979 i bought a 35mm camera with built in flash and got some really good pics of people-and some of the dance floor as well. i have cassette tapes-but we used to record over the tapes week on week to get the latest sounds. There was never enough light for a cine camera-so doubt if anyone did it-most were without sound anyway ! Rob

Ernie Andrews is a great record that you never hear these days and a bargain too !!!
  8. Where's your reply Chris !! and on the subject of "misheard at the Casino"---I used to think Eddie Regan "Playing hide and seek" was "Way out at sea" (play the game of love) Rob

Booted after a couple of plays on the strength of "Wash & Wear love" which is a totally different type of sound. Never had an original-but bought a boot on here last year for £5 as I had heard it out somewhere as well. A Cleethorpes sound via Rick Scott ?? so may explain why so many knew it at Drax Rob
  10. Think this thread has been mis-named, all points taken in above-Love Music was a Russ biggie and probably a "Discovery" "along comes Mary" was another of his from the same time. I think the thread should read records "Broken" by Russ-here's one-the most Wigan Pies eaten in one evening at the casino..... Paul Anka is a Russ sound, but not discovered by him. The dance floor was/ always seemed busy early on as well. But with the passage of time the records played by the other DJs Richard, Sam ,Gary, Pat & all especially in the last 2 years have in general, remained VERY sought after and have remained very hard to find. Where as Russ's you could probably still buy at around £5-£10 each The Casino was a WEEKLY all-nighter and very unique I met some great people there and had some fantastic times and I must say without Russ it would not have happened. And lets not forget Dean Parrish "I'm on my way" played at other places first-but forever a Casino sound! Rob ps when he played leon Thomas L-O-V-E I used to think it was called "Hello Vicky"
  11. Wasn't Yvonne Baker a Richard Searling spin at Wigan ? Russ's "discoveries" you can list on the rear of a postage stamp.........
  12. sorry Mikey wasn't being rude -just busy-its on Amazon for about £8 new-i'll get it sent for what shall we do for President Burtons 60th ??
  13. And when the Beatles got massive -they were bootlegging those early titles like crazy-some of the early boots are worth more than the originals!
  14. Rob Wigley commented on Crumb's comment on a gallery image in 1980/90s Soul
  15. Thats Rod Allsworth country isn't it !!!!! There's another pub opening on Soul Island"The Dodgy Stylus" better known as "The Knackered Needle"
  16. Thanks for the tip off will try and find one-how old is it-the title sounds familiar ! Rob
  17. We will be opening an all night chemist as well-it will be all locked up-- break your own way in through the back Nogger has just been appointed Health Minister! How much for those sounds ? "One shilling and Thre'pence 'alfpenny"
  18. We'd all be micro chipped and the money taken from your bank accounts to a certain level each month. Soul Island record stores and pubs would all run "Tabs"-when a certain level is reached the others would be allowed to catch up -drinking or reord buying--you'd get some extra credit for talking more bollox about matrix numbers etc. banks ? who needs them oh and President Burton will be re-introducing both the 10 Shilling and One pound Notes !
  19. Soul Island it is then There's going to be a wine bar called The Grapevine and one pub called "The tone-arm and Spindle" No import duty on records of any format.
  20. I hear Brad Pitt is lined up to play Rust Wynstainly
  21. Saw this happen in the States years ago as the net took off-myself and tats were in Detroit, we done "half" of a store with 500,000 45s in we hit late on in a trip. We decided to fly back 4 weeks later-to do the other "half" VANISHED into thin air in the space of 4 weeks-not forwarding address -nothing GONE. The owner had moved everything in a weekend -his lease was expiring--so he shut up and set off to go on line to save costs-never did find him again! I think (hope) specialist shops will survive-but its off to the Island I think Rob
  22. Located one in the UK its on its way--still think there's a Yellow issue of the Velvet Satins-I will have to ask Tim
  23. Nice reply-I thought it was just me !!! Ask President Burton to ban the phones-I'm sure he'll be happy to do that on the island -by the way I was at the Barnsley game with your lot before Xmas behind the goal-can you please tell me why I had a sheepskin coat on and the Newcastle fans kept taking their shirts off! it was feckin' freezing! Rob
  24. Don't you just hate it when this happens ! similar tempo-4 voices ? Rob
