  1. John's book is almost 5 years old
  2. Chalky don't know if you agree with this but sometimes it's not always live dj spots that can start a record off. Now as you know I do podcasts, and now and again when doing a Northern one I'll slip a truly rare or unknown Jamaican soul record in there, with no fanfare or anything, then 6, 12 months later I see it on playlists and I'm thinking well did they discover that themselves or did they hear it on that podcast? Either way is good and I'm not trying to say I'm responsible for any records being taken up by people but just that there are other ways of picking up on stuff than hearing them out.
  3. Sorry Mark I haven't got a copy but just wanted to say I love this record. And the Prince Buster version.
  4. I'd enjoy a night like that but I wouldn't go there thinking I was going to a Northern Soul night Greg. Whereas if I went to a Northern Soul night and it was dominated by these funky tunes, I wouldn't enjoy it.
  5. Go Go Children isn't a funky soul night though is it? And secondly, no it's not Northern Soul Source but 99% of the events discussed on here are Northern Soul events. Whoopee doo for all you connoisseurs who appreciate the much broader spectrum of soul music. Just accept that you have not been charged with a mission to convert everyone else! (Not you personally Greg) There is nothing worse than people lecturing other people, Russ.
  6. The fact that there's only five people discussing this particular brand of "Northern Soul" shows how interested people are in it. Just a handful of people trying to push their personal tastes onto people and meeting with total disinterest from the other 1500 members. Cue the predictable responses of 'dinosaurs' and 'not prepared to listen to anything different', maybe there's a reason for that, it's not anywhere near as good as traditional Northern Soul, and why try to fix something that's not broken?
  7. Well the one at the bottom is the light green original if thats any help (I'm not talking about ebay anyway, I mean if you actually come across one in a sales box etc
  8. Chalky's right, to identify an original you only have to know the difference between light green and dark green, you don't need to see both together. If it's dark green it's a boot, if it's light green it's an original.
  9. https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/mayfairmenthol/m.html?_ipg=48&_sop=12&_rdc=1 GOT SOME NICE STUFF ENDING LATER TODAY, PLEASE HAVE A LOOK COS MOST ARE STILL AT £5! LINDA LEWIS - POLYDOR JOY MARSHALL - DECCA SOUL BROS SIX - ATLANTIC ALAN BOWN SET - PYE SOUL AGENTS - PYE GLORIA ROMA - DECCA THE BEAZERS - DECCA SONNY CHILDE - POLYDOR MARTHA & VANDELLAS - STATESIDE BARRY ST JOHN - DECCA ETC ETC THEY END AT AROUND 8 PM CHEERS PETE
  10. I'd auction it if I were you. Set sale maybe £300 but you'd get more in auction.
  11. Here's an oddball one, from Argentina, came out in the UK on DIrection
  12. No it didn't, but it did come out by Joyce Bond on Island using the same backing track (this is why I credited the French EP male/female duet vocal to Jackie & Joyce many years ago despite there being no proof - but it stuck) Jeezus look at the warp on that LP
  13. £50 is about right
  14. Exactly - different strokes - Tony Galla is an out and and Northern stormer, that's the music I got into (albeit many years before that was played) and that's what it should sound like. Uptempo Northern Soul. Sounds F*ck all like a popcorn record though
  15. How about this one https://www.soul-source.co.uk/articles/articles/soul-news/going-back-memories-of-a-soul-boy-new-book-r2403
  16. I go the opposite way - if this stuff was played at Northern Soul venues I'd never go again. It's an alright record but to me, it's not Northern. Play it elsewhere, fine. (Having listened to all of it, it's just so boring I couldn't face listening to it again)
  17. It was that chap from Hertfordshire I think, Little...sorry can't remember, it'll come to me. He was featured on his local news, is that the one?
  18. I've reopened my website and added about 100 items on there, all have scans with thumbnails which can be expanded, sorry no sound yet cos I've forgotten how to do it but I'll have sound clips on there next week. By the end of next week I'll have uploaded about 300 Northern and 200 Modern 45's so it might be worth checking back. There's also stuff on there that I've never listed on my sales lists yet. Thanks for looking. Pete https://www.rare-soul.com/wordpress/record-shop-2/usa-northern-soul-rnb-originals/
  19. I'm going to guess that the best attended weekender is the Blackpool Tower one. That tells you all you need to know about what music policy will get the most punters. Popular, classic Northern Soul. Rare Soul Only Weekender - you might get 500 people attend maybe.
  20. Wasn't an exclusively soul label, they had all sorts on there. Don't think Anderson Bros were country anyway.
  21. This is the same as all of the rest of them, they're all okay, nothing wrong with them but you wouldn't make a special journey out to hear them. I like this but I'll have forgotten it in 10 minutes. This is just my opinion Russ.
  22. Yeah but if I'd heard that many in one hour / night it would be overkill
  23. Both at the same time - or the VIP's by a couple of weeks (6005 - 6012)
  24. Russ - I guess all this is down to how people perceive it - this one I would have just classed as straight Northern Soul.
  25. GBP, he lives up North
