No I don't think I'd enjoy the Mod forums, from what I've been told. Seriously.

I always went there but haven't been for many years unfortunately. Simon has something to do with this shop I think.

Will do, thanks!

Phillip & Lloyd (The Bluesbusters)
They were the Jamaican version of Sam & Dave. They recorded an equal amount of both ska and soul I think.

The weird thing is though - I haven't done a punk podcast!

Mod / Skinhead /suedehead Retro Clothing Wanted
Wasn't sure where to put this. Does anyone know where you can get decent retro clothing from. Kind of skinhead/suedehead style 1970-71. I've seen a few sites on the net and they just seem to sell new Harringtons and Fred perrys. I'm after a decent 'mod' style jacket to wear with a polo shirt and jeans maybe. Or do they still make sta-prest, cream or olive. Proper vintage shirts. If anyone knows where I can get this stuff or have cast offs they want to sell (or donate!) could they drop me a line. Am asking here because I like these sort of clothes, always have, and don't know any shops to buy them from. Kind of like what Terry hall is wearing in this picture of the Specials. n.b. I know I couild probably get all this stuff off the peg in Brighton.

Northern Soul In The Guardian
He was, but it wasn't him. Kicking myself for losing the tape now, someone on here must have it. It was about 50 minutes long I think, they were interviewing at the Casino. I think they may have played Biddu's "Exodus" as an example of how new releases were being played on the scene.

Northern Soul In The Guardian
Could have been Andy Peebles - but not sure if he was working for the BBC then.

What Is Crossover?
Exactly. So why do I get stick off the likes of Jock and Russ for expressing what my personal taste is - I can't help it if they can't get their heads around the fact that not everyone likes the same music as they do. I like punk, Jock eveidently hates it, I don't call him a goon for not being able to see the brilliance in aspects of punk.

Wigan Casino 2Nd Anniversary 23/9/75
A fantastic tape from Wigan Casino's second anniversary recorded by my good friend John Hillman. This features a relatively rare recording of Alan Rhodes during his first tenure as a Casino DJ, followed by an incredible spot by John Vincent who certainly gets the place going with his 100mph verballing...just listen to his introduction of "The Champion", one of my all time favourite Wigan moments. Plus you also get the community clapping during the silent break in The Jewels "We Got Togetherness", and one of the Wolverhampton lads describing Jon Ford's version "You Got Me Where You Want Me" as a 'wank version'. Quality is lo-fi from a portable cassette recorder, that won't stop you enjoying this cracking slice of Northern Soul history though (previously posted a couple of years back when I used Podbean). Tracks include Liberty, Frankie Crocker, Skullsnaps, Anderson Brothers, Tamiko Jones, Evelyn Thomas.. https://podcastmachine.com/podcasts/4425/episodes/28847

Kennard Gardner - Do The Skin / Dore
Can't answer your question off the top of my head I'm afraid but I do remember thinking at the time, why are they pressing this when it's so common you could get it anywhere for a fiver. 'Why are they playing this' was another question. Sorry, I mean why is Russ playing this.

Lazy Northern Soul & Reggae Oldies Mix
SOUL & REGGAE OLDIES MIX * * * * * Well after the recent History series, that took a lot of work to put together so for the first few of this months podcasts I thought I'd take it easy and let the iPod choose the music, or to put things simply, I just collected all the 4 and 5 star tunes off my iPod, categorised them and will make a couple of shows from these over the next few days. The first one is Northern Soul and Reggae, mainly the former. The next one will be pop/rock/new wave whatever. This one came out well though, a nice 75 minutes worth of listening. * * * * * https://podcastmachine.com/podcasts/4425/episodes/28842 The Persianettes - Run Run (Unissued Swan) / The Techniques - Drink Wine (Treasure Isle) / Marie Knight - That's No Way To Treat A Girl (Musicor) / U Roy - Festival Wise (Dynamic) / Lou Pride - I'm Comun' Home In The Mornun' (Suemi) / Paul Anka - I Can't Help Loving You (Rca) / The Gayletts - If You Can't Be Good Be Careful (Big Shot) / Jimmy Holiday & Clydie King - Ready Willing And Able (Liberty) / The M.V.P.'S - Turnin' My Heartbeat Up (Buddah) / Eric Donaldson - Love Of The Common People (Striker Lee) / The Vondells - Hey Girl You Changed (Airtown) / Herbert Hunter - I Was Born To Love You (Spar) / The O'kaysions - Girl Watcher (North State) / Baba Brooks - Guns Fever (Island) / Bobby Freeman - I'll Never Fall In Love Again (Autumn) / Gene Chandler - Nothing Can Stop Me (Stateside) / The Sensations - I'll Never Fall In Love (Treasure Isle) / Roddie Joy - Come Back Baby (Red Bird) / Porgy & The Monarchs - That Girl (Musicor) / The Clarendonians - Lonely Heartaches (Bullet) / Joey Heatherton - Hullabaloo (Coral) / Mary Love - You Turned My Bitter Into Sweet (King) / Baba Brooks - Girls Town Ska (Ska Beat) / Gene Chandler - Mr. Big Shot (Constellation) / Ken Boothe - Without Love (Studio One) / Ketty Lester - Please Don't Cry Anymore (Rca) / Soul Brothers Six - I'll Be Loving You (Atlantic) / Jay & The Americans - Livin'above Your Head (United Artists) / Inez & Charlie Foxx - No Stranger To Love (Stateside) / The Manhattans - I'm The One That Love Forgot (Carnival) .

What Is Crossover?
I doubt many people outside Cleethorpes and Blackpool knew the Lynn Varnado record, I remember it being booted and had no idea what it was, which is maybe why I didn't get it and still don't. The big word here is SOULFUL but that is not the be all and end all when it comes to records, I like music to be exciting and rewarding, and I personally get nothing whatsoever from these crossover records. It's like, yes, great singer, but what a boring record. I love soulful midtempo NORTHERN records, big city beat ballads. Not crossover.
-
What Is Crossover?
They still sound as bad to me now as they did then. It's just boring elevator music. If people love it, that's fine, I just don't like seeing it passed off as Northern Soul. I remember when Goldmine issued their first Crossover Soul cd, the catchily entitled "Crossover Soul" and I bought it and listened to it and I remember thinking to myself, it comes to something when that f*cking awful Lynn Varnardo track is the best one on the cd. The rest, I forgot immediately and still can't remember any apart from Ruby Andrews.

What Is Crossover?
Just because it's soulful doesn't mean it's any good though or you'd want to hear them though - most soul records are soulful!

Northern Soul In The Guardian
A lot of people OD'd on them. I'm ashamed to say that I did, though that was away from the Allnighter scene.
-
Northern Soul In The Guardian
No before their time Malc. I remember Love Trap being played. Interviews with Ginger & Eddie! And Tony Cummings I think.
-
What Is Crossover?
But the Clyde McPhatter was played as far back as 75 and never thought of as anything else but pure Northern Soul.
-
What Is Crossover?
Spot on really. Remember when you used to get soul packs in the 70's and threw away all the ones that weren't Northern? Well we did anyway. The stuff you chucked away was mostly crossover. Like when you got a great record, played the A side to death, tried the B side once and found it was forgettable and never went back to it. That's crossover as well. Of all of the different genres that comprise Northern Soul, crossover is the weakest because it was poor then and it hasn't improved over time, unlike say R & B which was obviously good back then but now sounds even better. You just have to get a record that's not northern but has the faintest trace of a beat, you call it crossover, it's so easy to do and it saves you finding any of the real stuff. Naturally there are the odd exceptions, but on the whole, 99% of what I've heard is garbage. The Margie Joseph record that Mal mentions above is one of the greatest soul records ever made, it's an insult to describe it as crossover. I feel so much better after a good rant.

Rare Reggae 45's For Sale
I don't think they were The Slickers. On the Trojan Story sleevenotes it intimates that they were, and this is going back to 1972, but I played "Nana" the other day and it doesn't sound like them to me. I think it's because one of the Crooks brothers of The Pioneers was in The Slickers.

Martha Reeves Getting All Cocky In Record Collector
Okay here's what it says. Q: I RECENTLY SAW A CONCERT IN LONDON FEATURING SEVERAL FEMALE STARS OF MOTOWN (BRENDA HOLLOWAY, CHRIS CLARK, THELMA HOUSTON, MABLE JOHN), IT WAS A TREMENDOUS EVENING EVEN THOUGH THE VENUE WAS NOT FULL. A: Oh, you mean "newcomers" to Motown! Mable John, who was berry Gordy's friend, did record some early sides but try and find a Motown record with her name on! As far as playing to a half empty venue is concerned, if they had me - an original Motowner - on the bill, perhaps it would have been full. No one on that bill has the same status as me in this country so perhaps they should have asked! Q: ALL TIME FAVOURITE ARTISTS? A: Me.
