I think you should find the answers to these questions before you start buying. Otherwise you will find that quite a number of people will be reaching for the mint sauce! You should first buy Mr Manship's latest guide and look at how to tell what has been bootlegged and what hasn't. Remember to subtract at least 30% from his guide prices so you know roughly what to pay. If you are planning to DJ then the list you put up isn't much cop as everyone has them; has heard them and doesn't want to really hear them all again (at least not all at the same time). Most people collect records and then decide they want to DJ or get asked. If you want to buy records just to be a DJ you will need a big house and no mortgage as you'll need to sell it to fund the record buying spree required to fill a decent 200 box for a set. Planning to DJ is a bit of a joke phrase really because unless you are really good you won't get any sets. The only other way is to have hideously rare or exclusive records and then you can get booked at the chinstokers dos (back to selling the house here). Or start your own night if you can find a venue. To be honest there are more more DJ's than dancers these days anyway. Dundee Davie's advice was best - don't do it. Alternatively, if you are under 25, just buy CD's, bootlegs and compilation albums and play them to your mates to get them interested in the music. Start your own night in a decent venue and have a strict "nobody over 30" policy on the door. You'll have much more fun, you won't have anyone clouding your vision with 40 years of NS politics and bullsh*t and the music might transfer to a new generation. Brilliant post......many a true word......

    Krol,I think ........Andy Killick mate.....
  3. still looking not a cheap sound by any means kev What's it like Kev, uptempo 60's?
  4. Problem with most rigs is they are not powerful enough for most venues. Djs come on & put the volume control to max regardless of what is coming out of the speakers. If they were to look at the desk every once in a while they might see some nice flashing ligts - green - amber & red - treat them as you would traffic lights & that is how the equipment should be run. If you try to "bounce" sound off a wall 30 yards away & your rig isn't big enough all you are doing is amplifying distortion - which equals very poor (but loud!!) sound quality which also equals damage to ears & you can't nip down to your local hi-fi shop to get them repaired. Brilliant post.......DJ's should be told not to touch anything. One person should be in charge of the sound, but they need to know what they are doing, and have some common sense.......the sound system is the most important part of an event.....it's not taken seriously enough, and I've been called a miserable **** when I have complained at certain nights.......But I won't put up with it any more, and either don't go back or take some ear plugs......people think nothing of paying thousands for records, but won't spend anything on decent PA. Most speakers that I see are set too low down, usually at head height, right in your lugholes..... If you get home from a do, and your ears are ringing. Then the PA has been set up wrong, or you've been standing with your head in a speaker. Either way it's bloody dangerous....

Buy a copy of John Manships bootleg guide, it's invaluable. In fact I'm very disappointed that he hasn't bothered to update it. Instead of trying to combine it with the price guide, which doesn't work in my humble opinion.
  9. Butch has a Volumes, but it's very expensive....

  16. Don't forget there's two different releases of this tune, different takes too. Hard record either way.
  17. I agree with Ian's sentiments - Roger was from a totally different era and culture to teenagers who went to the Wheel in the mid to late 60s. Roger was from an intellectual background in Oxford and reacted in a bohemian way by getting into the 50s Jazz scene and then Blues and then R&B. He rode a motorbike to Manchester and got a job at the Kellogg's factory and rented a bedsit. Manchester had a big student / Beatnik / Trad etc scene that Roger realised was untapped. John Mayall, Cyril Davis, Chris Barber etc were his contemporaries, had Roger been a musician, I'm sure he would have gone in that direction. I met Roger a couple of times and corresponded with him too. Roger's plans for the Wheel was an R&B club, along the lines of those springing up in Ealing, Richmond, Soho etc. Because the R&B stuff he was playing was so unusual and near on impossible to obtain, it was considered to be very cool by the club's clientelle. But things evolved, the Wheel became infamous, it became a cult club in a wild west city. It was regarded a bit like Wigan Casino was in the 70s. As soon as Soul began to be popular and the `in` music at the Wheel and the cool, often Jewish stylists got out fast, due to the influx of the popular mass produced Mods, that is when Roger's reign of power and influence at the club began to wain. Roger's route into Soul music was `educated`, there was a whole swath of similar Soul enthusiasts - arm chair Soul fans not discotheque goers. Pete Wingfield, was a great example - a public school boy that had an obsessive passion for classic 60s Soul - but often preferred the slow flip to the dance tunes. Certainly not Alvin Cash or Jerry O. But these guys were a minority, the majority of Soul fans of the mid 60s were just like me, unwashed, green, raw, simply interested in a good time and Tamla Motown and Ska were all part of the popular Soul mix. I was 15 in '65, a middle of the road, secondary modern chav and certainly didn't want educating by some high brow DJ. I just wanted anybody to keep slapping the dance tunes on when I was out. There was plenty of time for the slow stuff when you were at home! Roger was an decent R&B guy who was swept up and passed over by folk like me. Roger disliked discotheque Soul, discotheque kids, discotheque culture in general. Roger could come across as being quite arrogant but I don't think he was - it was just that the `pure` route wasn't fashionable with the masses and he didn't like what evolution had thrown up. Great post, and loved your book. So evocative of a very special time. Phil.
  18. I thought you were selling up (or is it me that's senile?). Flash McKinley was one of the very few times I wondered if I could raise a grand for a record I did, payed off my debts, lost my job.....and started buying again...

Believe me it will have been sh***ed, and will have been in a sales box for a long time. I'd be amazed if you got a minty one for less than a grand.
  23. Come on Neil, get them big lads on...
  24. You were never meant to see the end prices, he wasn't pleased when I first told him about it. I think he said last time he was on here, it would be available with all the other info, on a pay to veiw, x amount a year.
  25. What's the crack with the Flairs 45? I was amazed at what this went for on the bay. Has Butch started playing it or something? £30 record isn't it?
