Yet Another Ebay Tale Of Overcharging On Shipping
I have noticed a few of these threads, and I have been charged large amounts for shipping before, But! I have always paid up without causing a scene, because I failed to see the seller had stipulated the costs in his listing. However, yesterday I won an item for $17 and there was nothing in the listing for international shipping, so I waited for the invoice. When the invoice arrived, I couldn't believe my eyes. $24.50 That's just taking the piss in my eyes, so I wrote a very polite email querying the price. I received a very curt reply saying, we only ship recorded to international customers. So I replied that recorded delivery didn't cost anything like $24.50 and please could he do it for the correct price. I didn't get a reply, so the next day I paid for the record and put a note saying I was unhappy with his charges and I would be reporting him to eBay. Next thing I know he has refunded the payment and put in an item cancellation. I'm annoyed about this because I want the record. That's the situation at the moment, I have refused to agree to the cancellation. Impasse?

Record Price Mentality
It's all well and good people moaning about high prices, but if you have paid top dollar for a record you are hardly going to sell it on at a bargain price. Well if you do you are mental.

Record Price Mentality
I find it incredible that anyone could make a living out of buying records on ebay. Everything I bid on goes for proper money, and with the cost of shipping etc. profit margins would be very slim. I would have thought you would need to be buying huge numbers of 45's to get a living wage out of it? I applaud anyone who can make it work. I find it very difficult to move 25% of what I put up for sale these days.

Record Price Mentality
That made me laugh mate. There's no way a record dealer could make a living buying off ebay.

Record Price Mentality
I have it on good authority from a well known record dealer that the Japanese market did go through a decline, but it's back very strong now and with a lot of northern being sold. John Manship during his rant at me on the other thread stated that the Ty Karim was won by a Japanese collector. And I witnessed a bidding war on a classic northern record a few weeks ago and one of the bidders was again Japanese.

Record Price Mentality
It's all relative to a persons knowledge of records. What period you were involved in the "scene" and how serious a collector you were / are. When the Flairs and Lee Fields suddenly became "hot", I had never heard of them, and that goes for a massive amount of other people. So, to us plebs they were new sounds. Therefore we didn't realise that these records had been known about for years. And that's why they go for silly money. People heard them for the first time and thought wow! I have to have that record.

Anarchy In The World Of Record Collecting?
Who's to say the Tomangoes that went on ebay last week wasn't bought by a deep soul or lowrider collector for the other side Me, I know the gentleman that won it and he collects a wide spectrum of styles of music, but he has a fantastic northern section.

Anarchy In The World Of Record Collecting?
Someone has to create a buzz on records to make them become "wanted" and that's the problem. We don't have a regular venue that can champion good dance music. In the old days we had weekly venues, and then I think Stafford was every two weeks? Please correct me if I'm wrong. We used to have monthly nighters, but now, it seems to be the trend for events to be on just three or four times a year. In my humble opinion, you can't create a buzz on a record that nobody will hear for months. There seems to be quite a lot of negativity towards anything successful on the rare soul scene. And despite people saying things like, You're playing oldies, it's all been done before, so and so has been playing that 45 for years etc. etc. The fact is, when I started the Burnley Allnighters, there was no other event that was playing 100% quality dance music all night. I was lucky enough to have a group of Dj's that had the same mind set as me, and lived for that nighter. And by that I mean spent rediculous amounts of time and money trying to find records to outdo each other, to find something brilliant that the others didn't own. This made for something very special, and I'm very proud of what we atchieved. What I'm getting at is this. Despite some people saying this is rubbish, the demand and price of a lot of the stuff we were playing shot up. And I can give many examples of this, but the most glarinly obvious was the night when Fred Krol dug out his copy of Billy Davis - Stanky on Cobblestone. It went from £10 to £100 more or less overnight. And he only ever played it once. The only Dj around who can create such a buzz is Butch, but that's because he's been number one for years, and his sets are listened to and dissected by everyone. We need a regular [at least monthly] allnighter with Dj's that have the taste and passion to play sets that get people wanting to dance. That's what makes the prices of records go up. And that's why the beat ballad has died a death. Nobody will dance to them anymore. I have now put my tin hat on, and retired to my bunker.

He spat the dummy out over some 45's he was auctioning for me. I have tried to bury the hatchet on several occasions but to no avail.

- Brief Feedback From Bank Holiday Events
I've not been anywhere for a long time personally. But have noticed that quite a few events have had very good Dj's crammed into an event thereby giving each one less than an hour. Some do half an hour x2 at different times. I personally hate this and would never attend as in my humble.....doesn't give them time to flow. Just voicing an opinion, and not getting at anyone. I base my opinion on my own feelings when I have done short sets. Deflated, unable to get into a flow, cheated and unsatisfied. I always think good Dj's need at least an hour. We used to regularly do an hour and fifteen minutes at Burnley, and regularly gave a guests one and a half hours and two hours for Butch. Too many cooks, too many chiefs etc. etc. We know why promoters do it. They hope more Dj's = more friends/hangers on to swell the numbers through the door. Why not try for quality and have fewer, but better Dj's? Why am I bothering??????????- Eddie Daye "guess Who Loves You" On Shrine

Argh! I always wanted the Poets, never had it. Wish I wasn't just buying a business.
