  1. I saw Cymande in October at the Band on the Wall - all original members. They were absolutely fantastic.
  2. Clearly a bloke thing
  3. Think we've done this before, but here it is anyway: it's the guy that stays at home when everyone else has gone to war. Naturally he'll mess with your woman... https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Jody
  4. Now I know this isn't for everyone However it's been a big want of mine for ages and I managed to get a copy at a decent price earlier this year. Julio Gutiereez was a band leader, composer and arranger from Cuba who made some really influential recordings in the 50s and 60s. On this 45 however it sounds like he'd got hold of a sound effects record and decided to use as much of it as he could get away with. The result is one nutty tune! I love it because it kind of captures the craziness of a big city: during the course of the record you hear what sounds like alarms and sirens, a break in, a hold up, a shoot out and some hookers plying for trade - one of whom, if I'm not mistaken, is a transsexual. I listened to it six times straight when I first heard it - much to Mrs G's delight (not...) It's manic, a bit all over the shop, but as funky as hell and in all honesty not like anything else I've ever heard. Turn it right up - and hold on to your seats! The Sound Of Julio Gutierrerz - Fun K City - Vico
  5. Great call - killer!
  6. I'm the same - I prefer the harder stuff than the stuff that get played as Funky Northern - although to be fair, I heard some stuff at 100 Club that turned my head last time I was there. That James Lewis Fields track is just a surefire dancefloor winner though isn't it?
  7. Cracking. These were the kind of tunes that opened my eyes to a new world!
  8. Just started reading the comments on last night's BBC 4 documentary but stopped as I've not seen it yet. However, as these days Soul Sourcers are pretty open minded about funk, I thought it might be interesting to see what sort of funk people like. So, Deep funk, funky Northern, funky R&B, disco funk, jazz-funk, JB style grooves - whatever floats your boat - why not chuck a few tunes up to show what sort of funk you like and maybe a few lines to explain why. They can be super rare/obscure or just a well known tune that you love to bits. Anything goes as long as it's funky. If you don't like funk then that's your prerogative, but this thread is just not for you and I'll reluctantly lock it if anyone comes on just to say that. I'll start the ball rolling with the one that I definitely never tire of: Tony Alvon and the Belairs - Sexy Coffee Pot - Atlantic. It's that explosion of rock hard drums, pounding base and kick ass guitar on the intro that never fails for me. 10 seconds in and there are horns, bubbling organ and exultant shouts. What follows is an amazing series of syncopated breaks and 2 minutes later it's all over. An astonishingly exhilarating dance record.
  9. Not sure where you get prog from? A better swamp pop record than a soul one, maybe Saw Tony Joe White live last year - he looks a sounds like a man who's lived a dozen very full lives and he's still got a ferocious guitar style - great stuff!
  10. The thing about simple typos is that they're not really comedy sales are they? This one for example is just a listing error. The rest of this guy's prices are ok so it's clearly a mistake. These type of accidents don't actually make you laugh like the deluded fools asking (or paying) stupidly high prices for common/readily available records and/or boots, do they?
  11. One in Japan here (as far as I can tell...) https://www.nightbeatrecords.com/?pid=8549879
  12. I'm about to go to Germany. I'm late, Mrs G is telling me to get off the internet and pack my undies while I strugglle to multi-task. This is stressing me more! Right then: the world turns clocks back at 02:00. Casino doesn't do it during night so when you come out at 08:00 Casino time, the world has gone forward an hour and it's 09:00 real time. Hence less time to wait for bus. That works doesn't it?

The great thing about playing non-Northern gigs is that you always have an excuse to some classic Dr John in the box. Dr John: Right Place, Wrong Time - Atco 45 But I guess the scenesters would at least be happy with this one: Zu Zu Blues Band: Zu Zu Man - A&M 45
  14. Check your messages mate!
  15. I'm obviously thinking of when they went forward Ady... Just checked in the Big Green Lizard's Concise Dictionary by the way. Pedant: (n) a smartarse.
  16. Less time for our gang to wait for the bus to to Bolton, then on to Oldham too
  17. You did know - you've just forgotten. Post 14
  18. Nonsense. Everyone knows that the sign of a healthy scene is more nights than any one area can reasonably support, less cohesion, greater fragmentation and a proliferation of DJs with essentially similar tastes. In fact the greater number of clashes and least probability of maintaining a consistent and enduring scene the better. Anyone would think you don't believe in consumer choice.
  19. I remember someone nicked some records from Dave Withers' stall on Bury market and I have a feeling that both of those records were among them. That's probably why I remember that they were around at the same time.
  20. Wigan, late 70s, very briefly - about the same time as Gloria and the T-Aira's "I'm Satisfied"

Why buy a CD - they're all on youtube. iphone and decent internet connection...
  22. Thanks John. We've booked the Reichstag trip today as it happens and Mrs G spotted the bit about needing ID. Pork knuckle sounds alright though! More food tips please
  23. Great tips so far guys - I knew I could rely on you. Getting flights to the correct city seems like an essential piece of advice
