Recall reading somewhere that the green ones were second issues - mine's a green copy, bought from Hott Waxx in the late 80's I think... Hippo.
  2. What puzzled me was that Kojak at the time hadn't packed it in - never mind, I'm sure there are more important things to worry about... Ahhh...Yate in the snow...never seen thunder and lightning during a blizzard before! Having to follow lorry tracks back up the M5, and inevitably losing the silencer on the mound of snow between them...and the time that Pete French had to leave early and had to act as a trailblazer removing fallen branches from the road all the way back to the motorway...great fun Hippo.
  3. Get yourself a copy of the US Uptown LP - not only is it on there, but you'll be certain that your "Come go with me" is legit Hippo.
  4. Yes, but it's funny how I knew it was your spot on the tape before I heard the voice...must be the fact that "She's just a pretty thing" was playing! Hippo.
  5. Ok, so we know that Kojak ran the first lot of Yate niters, first at the Stars and Stripes/Sterling Suite, later at the Baths, until Spring '77 when Dinks of the Southern Soul Club took over and instigated the glory years....BUT...flipping through some old B & S over the weekend (yeah, sad I know ) I found a half-page ad for the SSC niters at the Stars and Stripes in May '76 - a year before they actually started. Now, due to work etc. I wasn't there at that time, so can anyone tell me if they actually occurred - the billing was Tony Ellis, Shay and friends - or did Dinks come to some arrangement with Kojak? Hippo. P.S. Typing this listening to those Yate clips - thanks to Simon T. for a great listen!
  6. ---------- It was an unreleased Popcorn Wylie thing, one story was that she was one of the Adorables, another was that nobody knew her at all... One of my big favourites at the time, I'd forgotten how big until I heard RS playing it on a Wigan live tape. Oh bliss....synchronised handclaps or what! Hippo.
  7. True enough Mark, one mans meat and all that...must admit that my benchmark is probably Big Daddy Rogers (oops, another Big daddy ), that kind of crunching beat is ideal Northern IMHO. Some of the almost doo-wop/rock 'n roll stuff is just too early for me, but I'm trying not to write it all off like some people as there'll always be something that grabs you and says "I'm the exception to the rule..." Hippo.
  8. Only recently heard this and can't get it out of my (limited) brain: Dorothy Williams - Watchdog Hippo. P.S. Pete - another who agrees with you on Wilson Pickett, never got the appeal of that one at all!
  9. ...and yes, I'm going to have to shell out for a copy as well! (unless any one wants to take a Mariah Carey album sampler, the new Nas album sampler, blah blah blah, in part exchange) Hippo.
  10. Tuning round my radio last Friday evening I caught Mike Hollis (ex Oscar Michael, well known in the West Mids in the early days of the scene) playing Magicians and Ty Karim complete with nice plug for the CD - and this was on Saga FM! Hippo.

So I was right - makes a change! It's actually just called "D-5", and it's on his "Mr. Everything" album, Wand 667. And the next please... Hippo.
  12. Yeah, you're the kind of guy i hate - I could spend three days and find two thirds of bugger all (and that would be a second issue!) some people got it, some don't... Hippo.

No, can't place it at the moment - it's just how it sounded to me, Dan. Which means I'm probably 120 degrees off course . But ain't that the fun of cover-ups? Hippo.

....and tonight Matthew, i'm going to be...Chuck Jackson! Hippo.
  15. Well, if it was West hampstead I can remember the night -and the kebab - I'd gone up with Greety and ady P and something that dave and I bother remember vividly is that on the drive back Radio Luxembourg aws on the car radio, we're playing grown up sherbet dabs in the back seat and just as we head down towards Cheltenham the dj (having played pop dross all the journey) played "When I'm gone" - so unexpected that as i say we both recall it clearly! Hippo.
  16. Interesting and thought provoking - looking forward to the follow-up. For myself, I reckon Wing and a Prayer Fife and Drum Corps disco version of "Baby face" was when it all started to unravel, but I expect the dreaded disco movement will be covered in Part 21 Hippo.
  17. ...True Image possibly? jerry
  18. Just thought it was very strange that I could actually understand what the dj said after it. Moooost unusual jerry.
  19. Close...here's the details- KYLE, MICHAEL WHY DO WE MAKE LOVE 1995 US WEB 01-MK-94 12" ISSUE ...never thought of playing it after "Believe in love" but damn, you're right! Then again, played it as a new release at the time and don't think I've played it since. Have to dig it out this afternoon! Jerry.

...and for true anoraks its US chart debut was at no.91 on the Cashbox chart w/e 28 December 1963. Jerry.

Totally agree with you Pete, couldn't have put it better myself. truly a ground-breaking track! Jerry.
  23. Don't know about Party Specials, but why do i have a "blue" taste in my mouth when I listen to that download? And why do I picture Dave Thorley spinning it on an emidisc at Stroud Sub Rooms (true!) And where was that recorded/
  24. Jerry Hipkiss replied to a post in a topic in Look At Your Box
Yes, you're correct Simon... Some of the confusion about the '63 issue may lie in rare soul folklore - "Harlem Shuffle" was truly a "Sleeper", its first UK issue was, I believe, 1965 but it was re-plugged (not reissued!) and played constantly on Sue over the years, culminating in the Island reissue in 1969 which got it into the UK top ten. . And IMHO the "fast" version ain't a patch on the original, sounds like a real "throwaway" job to me! Jerry.
  25. I'm still recovering from hearing 'Torture' for the first time 20 years (?) ago, as a spotty 14 year old. Regards Jim. link
