AI re-writing the History of Northern Soul
Don’t know if anyone else watched the last series of Traitors, but one of the lads on there did an intro piece and stated he was into ‘northern soul dancing’. Not into northern soul, but northern soul dancing!

All nighter scene 'up north'
Look at what was happening in Manchester 10-12 years ago. There were a few really good nighters, CIS / Middleton, Twisted Wheel, plus some really ace soul nights like Greatstone, Different Strokes, A Taste of Honey. There was a decent mod presence with Hideaway and No Way Out, loads of bar gigs with the likes of Steve Cato, Dave Rippolles, Big George, Adam Leaver, Gumbo, plus loads of my pals doing our own thing. There was SO much going on, it was an amazing time. The City had its own mini scene that meant every weekend something was on. It was an exciting time, everyone supported each other's nights and people from further afield could travel up for the weekend knowing they could get to 3 or 4 quality events. Once the nighters stopped, that was a big reason the rest started drying up, in my opinion. Isolated events aren't enough to create a local scene. That was a special time and it won't be repeated again, unfortunately. We were the young guns in our 20's and 30's that attended all the nights. Now we're all grown up with kids. There isn't the strength of that exciting scene to engage a younger, dedicated crowd that buys into and maintains the ethos of the scene. It's now a confusing space where influencers are taking over and the nights I've been too barely excite me, let alone a new generation. I remember walking into the CIS all nighter when I was 21 and it blew me away. Packed, dark, pounding music, cool crowd, it changed my life. I don't feel that magic is there anymore, and maybe that's ok. Everything has a shelf life.

Just where is NS heading in the future?
Surely a big part of the scene, and what attracted me to it, was the fact it was always cool. I’m 42 and started attending the CIS all nighters in Manchester when I was 21. I’ll never forget the first time I opened the doors and saw, and felt, the room. Most people were probably in the 35-50 age bracket and some seriously cool people. The whole spectacle was oozing excitement. Sheridan’s, Middleton, Soul or Nothing, Lowton, proper nights that were 100% amazing. 21 years later and those people are now 55 - 70. I don’t go out anymore really but when I do I’m only ever disappointed. The younger people that are allegedly taking things forward seem very tame. Where are all the hedonistic lunatics? That’s what the scene was all about for me. Proper characters that were bang into the music. It’s all very wishy washy now, and the modern interpretation wouldn’t excite the 21 year old me.

Northern Soul and Neurodiversity
Amy is simply saying that the soul scene could be very appealing for people that are neurodiverse, not that everyone on it is neurodiverse.

Northern Soul and Neurodiversity
Hi Amy, I don’t usually post on here but I think your post is very interesting and I totally agree with all the points you make. This won’t make any sense to those that aren’t neurodivergent (clear to see from some of the responses), but it resonates with me. ADHD is not widely understood, even for the people that have it! Constantly chasing excitement, routine, familiarity, hyper focus, impulsive behaviour - all available on the soul scene and in abundance. Obviously, the initial attraction is the music, but I think you are absolutely bang on with the other elements. I hope this thread doesn’t get inundated with replies from people that are uninformed of what neurodiversity actually is, or think it’s a load of rubbish, as it would be great to hear more from other people that can really relate to this.
