Ringleaders - Secret Stash 45
Ringleaders 'I've got to find my baby' is truly wonderful. The very same session as Beverly Schaffer 'even the score' with them doing the choruses… Thanks for that also; mystery solved. Amazing stuff and the Sharpees 'darkness of the night' is super cool. Will buy both ASAP as I furbish my PP account with some greens. Cheers, SS & SS

Calling All Anoraks - Which Copy Has The Best Sound?
Hi Richard, I hear you. So you say that by playing them side by side, the Billie (promo) sounds "deeper" and "clearer" than the Billy (stock) Kennedy 'TIAGG' and even the 'ST' side. But the matrix are the same. The promo factor is commonly accepted to be of better quality since they were pressed prior to the stock issues, most of the time using the very same stampers. But after X hundreds of record pressed, the stamper start to "wear out" somehow and the quality of the press becomes less "precise". That is why promos are considered to be of better quality than the last runs of pressings made from a same stamper. In some cases there's a re-work of the mix on the master tapes that comes in the process of the different runs of pressings. One of the good example of the genre is the Miracles 'shop around' on Tamla when in a matter of weeks Berry Gordy changed his mind 3 times to issue 3 different takes hesitating wich one would be the best cut/version to hit the chart higher. And they actually first issued the first cut releases with the label crediting the second take because they already had all the labels printed for the second take and in the mean time, Berry Gordy decided the actually issue it with the first take. You can only check what take it is (1 or 2) by looking at the matrix, not the label. Now I would expect if they did a re-work/mix on the issue of Billy Kennedy (corrected his name at the same time) that the matrix would show the difference. I believe you that they are the same matrix and sound different but I don' understand what happened in the process for a record using the same lacquer then stamper to change of sound. If it was a stamper/lacquer quality problem, the sound wouldn't be different (like here) but rather show some distortions/degradations issues. Cheers for all of that Richard.

Chuck Corby And Rhythm Rascals
But they are not the same. The Rhythm Rascals is another take of the song to Chuck Corby's.They are very similar in many ways but the overall sound is different. It could be a mix thing but the singer's voice and tone is also totally different. They are just not the same "record"-ing. Check the differences; Always preferred the Chuck Corby to the Rhythm Rascals version. The sound is "bigger" and the overall build up of the song is there while for the Rhythm Rascals the song doesn't build up as much, it's kinda more "linear". And that very annoying sax echoing the lead singer is way too predominant to my ears on the Rhythm Rascals. The Rhythm Rascals was first (defo mid-1966). Chuck was likely involved in this project somehow/somewhere (who is Bobbie Boy Butch ?) like for the Soul Communicators... and Chuck Corby's is often dated (even on his own site) to be 1967. Check all the catalogue numberings here below on the label scans. Mind you that the 'A' side for the Rhythm Rascals is 'Why Did You Have To Go' and for Chuck Corby on Fee Bee 'Honey, Let Me Stay' is the 'A' side. So the tune we are talking about here were only 'B' sides on both releases. Still it may have had enough exposure through the Roulette release, that Chuck would finally re-record 'GBMS' as 'INYL'. As to why the change in the title from 'GBMS' to 'INYL', that maybe only Chuck could explain. Order of releases;

No Feedback No Further Purchases
The Evil-bay feedback system is rather easy to use and to be reminded of just by checking your account. Discogs, Gemm... are less friendly to use and not as remindful IMHO anyway. Here on SS, it takes some little time and workouts but it's totally free and so, it's totally OK. But indeed I'm led to believe that some buyers and sellers alike are "not to be bothered about" with that. I think it's a shame. It's like going to the butcher and neither the butcher nor the customer greet, say please, thank you and goodbye. And the next time they no say about the piece he bought was good or anything. As a seller I always wait for the customer to either say that he is happy about the record(s) condition and all, before I leave him my feedback. As I buyer I can wait that the seller awaits my positive feedback before he posts his. But to do it is important. And there's anything to be sort out by one party or the other, communication prevails any positive or negative feedbacks. With overall nowadays communication degradation, it's no surprise that a little gratitude, nothing you can go HyPe about, on a deal is just left out. Another Facebook symptom maybe...

Finishing Touch - Second Best... Issue - Rare Or Not?
Hi Eddie, private joke with 'Soulshrew' with whom we do chat in French from time to time. I was not aware of the 2 releases for 'second best' and so I was thanking him for that. Now are you on the look out for an issue or what is it ? I can try to see if there's not a copy left somewhere in a shop in Brussels for cheap ? It'll be the 201 then if ever, I've never seen the 203 as far as i can recall. But loads of 201 orange stock issues. Cheers, Tim

Nope, 150 £ seems to be the price on the high end. 13 copies featured on Popsike between 27 £ (2007) and 222 $ (2011). You see...

Finishing Touch - Second Best... Issue - Rare Or Not?
To me not rare, but now... I could have picked them up by the dozens there must have been a box of 25 or more than one all NOS ! But then, some 15 years ago, I only took a few from them as I couldn't sell them easy as today apparently. Does that help ?

Calling All Anoraks - Which Copy Has The Best Sound?
Hi Richard, do you actually have a Billie Kennedy 'TIAGG' w/dj that plays louder and clearer under the hand too compare the matrix detail ? Cause I have a black one and if the lacquer they used was another mix, the matrix should show the differences. Cheers, Tim

Ed Crook On Tri-Sound
Going by the designs variations of the two singles on the label, I'd put them in this order. It doesn't make sense that the stars and crossed Ed Crook is a/the "pirate" version having a promo lease on top of it. Major Reynolds might be confused on the actual release that was pressed and sold without his consent, but this might have happened sometime during the second or third round of press while the demand was still growing. So it could have been an extra batch done on the side and sold on the regular circuit just to make a quick "cash-in". Horizontal lining gold to yellow both with address Crossed lining without address and 'dimensional sound' logo to no more lining with address and 'dimensional sound' logo address and no 'dimensional sound' logo anymore So there's a promo for Ed Crook stars and crossed edition. A demo for the "bolder" design was said to exist, is this the one ? dreaded home made RED 'A' promo. I don't believe there were demos at all for the second and third rounds of releases for those two Tri-Sound 45's. Has anyone seen a demo for the Devotions 45 ?

Jock Mitchell W/ Fab. Agents No Mad Woman On Golden Hit
Hisses I understand are due to wear. More dominant on styrene than vinyl. Here we are with a vinyl record. And like I explained here above, the "hiss" is in the mastering I'm lead to believe. If some NMW sound with less "hiss" than others that means there are different pressings. Are they for real ? How to tell them apart visually ? Is it not actually a matter of different system (needle...) and sound adjustment on the amp and/or through a mixing table ?

Jock Mitchell W/ Fab. Agents No Mad Woman On Golden Hit
Hi there, I have what was once a minty copy that I doubt saw a needle before mine. Anyway, the record produces a rather dominant "wish-woosh" type of sound all along the song 'no mad woman'. Like in this clip. The other youtube clips are too loud and the highs are distorted. They were apparently "corrected" somehow. I doubt it's a vinyl issue (poor quality...) since in the run in grooves the sound is normal and the problem comes with the start of the song and ends the same way: the run out grooves are also silent. The mastering is rather poor since the volume is low anyway. Like something was not right during the recording mastering. I also doubt (until proven wrong) that it is a lacquer issue in the pressing process. Is there another matrix (GH 103 A) for this one ? I've heard here and there that some copies didn't have that problem. Is it a fact ? Is there another lacquer pressing ? Same/different matrix ? Only once I saw a DJ playing a loud sounding copy like in the other youtube clips (BTW all Belgian pop-corn guys like the DJ here !). I had a peak at the said 45 and it seemed rather odd; thick like a carver with what looked like a stuck-on label. I did try to ask him about it but he remained rather evasive about it. Hmm ! Anyone with anything about this 45 ?
