  1. ============== Yeah I'd have a few questions and theories to put to him as well, but I'd best not air them on here, don't fancy being hit over the head by Charlton Heston with the ten commandments Winnie:-)
  2. ============= Have you been reading Dante's Inferno again?
  3. ========== Not sure he'd sit comfortably with anything to do with X over, too many memories. If he were playing to the 5000 suppose he may have 2 CDs and 5 originals. The one I wonder about? Would he change water into wh*zz Winnie:-)
  4. ================= Stevie, And this isn't a dig at you in any way, SS is constantly attracting new members who may not have taken part in previous discussions on any given topic, so personally I don't mind going over old ground, because it often contains fresh takes/views that certainly maintain my interest. Winnie:-)
  5. ============= Maybe we have to look at this from another perspective, these days DJ's are prepared to travel, guesting up and down the country, so the pilgrimages up North to see a top line DJ are no longer required. I can regularly see DJs I like such as, Soul Sam, Arthur Fenn, Butch, Kenny Burrell (to name just some) at venues close to me. I still travel to a degree, but the need to do it every week isn't there, because they're doing the travelling instead Winnie:-)
  6. ========== You'd have to define rank and file Col, which might make this a very tasty thread Winnie :-)
  7. ========== Forgot about this track, absolutely brilliant and incredibly moving Winnie:-)
  8. Love don't live here any more Killing me softly
  9. ============ Yep love I'm doin fine now. also Remember me (D.Ross) and did Stay with me baby (L. Ellison) chart, gives me the shivers, same with woman to woman Winnie:-)
  10. ========= Thanks Steve, suddenly realised I'd left myself open for a "I believe I can fly" Jibe..... sensible lot outside of the SSCDT aren't you Winnie:-)
  11. =========== Doesn't the modern tag come from the style, tempo and production of records rather than the year it was recorded. I'm not trying to oversimplify things, I really don't know. I go in modern rooms, and dance to things just as happily as in northern rooms, the prerequisite is that they hit the spot. Think Col, was just trying to see what appealled to both audiences, and obviously stuff that has crossed over to the northern room, would feature more in the picks. Winnie:-)
  12. coco and Ben almeta Latimore corey Glover There's an R Kelly thing I like, but can't remember the name of it
  13. Winnie :-) replied to a post in a topic in All About the SOUL
    Sad news ;-( R.I.P.
  14. ========== We contact Wogan, and ask him to host the inaugural save the soulie telethon, with 'Pie-eyed' the bear as our mascot What about, just as a suggestion, an Motown weekend combined with northern? I know we've all heard the motown catalogue, but the idea is to get younger people into the scene, would they not be more likely to identify with it? Then slip in northern, maybe a bit of a long process, cos they may have to have some tried and trusted first, but if they like that, then it can become progressive. Most of us came up via motown, maybe a similar route could be applied? Not sure if it's been tried already, but we all know to keep the scene going we need new blood. This way they'd have a grounding in style of music, and etiquette. Winnie:-)
  15. ============ So we can lose the elitist element completely then? So no more original vinyl, because that can also seem intimidating to those that might not want to collect. I've seen posts on here saying CDs should not be played at venues, posts that laugh at the way people dress etc, isn't that a form of elitism? The point you're not answering is why is it ok for certain elements to be included as a right of passage, and not others. Membership cards aren't there to keep 'normal' people out, they're to make sure we're all of basically the same mind. If you look at this forum for instance the thing that binds us all together is the music, and I think that's the way it should be at an event. I really can't see how membership cards would affect that. Winnie:-)
  16. =========== I honestly wasn't thinking along those lines Shane. Was thinking more of those who turn up when the pubs are shut, already three sheets to the wind. It's not just young people who get steamed up by the way, older ones do too, stop being paranoid Can't see a problem with membership cards myself, you may think it smacks of a secret society, but so would many other aspects of the scene. Try explaining to your girlfriend why you would pay a fortune for something on vinyl, when you could pick it up for next to nothing on CD. Not trying to open a debate here, just saying that there are many reasons why the soul scene could be considered secretive and if you accept one, its only right that you respect others. I'm sure all that people are doing/saying is to protect whats there already and they're/I wouldn't want to exclude any genuine people wishing to get into it. Winnie;-)
  17. ============ You'd have thought so Stu, but I remember going to a venue up north reasonably regularly a few years ago, and the bouncers used to let their mates in for nothing. Stood there waiting to pay, whilst 8/9 of these drunken types just walked in. I was told later that it was happening a lot over the night, but as I never saw it after that, can't comment. It's NOT Stoke by the way, just thought I'd mention that, before anybody starts jumping to conclusions. Winnie:-)
  18. ============= IMO the problem probably lies more with venue owners than promoters. Most (if not all promoters) would prefer not to have these, sorry if the word appears antequated to those wanting new blood on the scene, "Outsiders" kept out, but alcohol consumption equals profit, so not much promoters can do really. Could go on and on, but don't want to appear all Billy Graham, cos I'm not, but the locals can be a pain in the backside if left unchecked. Winnie:-)
  19. =========== Bit touchy Roger, seem to remember you quoting negative things about a charity (same night as a Stoke nighter) soul night, that you wasn't going to attend, what's the difference? Winnie:-)
  20. Andy Rix dances, well he used to
  21. ========= Couldn't they just tick them off in the book? Not that I have anything against the top 500, would dance to most of them, but as someone told me the other day, "You'd dance to the theme of the 10 O'Clock news"
  22. ======== It was definitely played twice But as said already, it was a party
  23. ========= Also if there's only 10/20/30 in early doors how can you educate the majority who come in later, unless you play the tunes again in a later spot? Surely that's one of the things I keep seeing come up, we can only move on if we educate, but how can you do that when the class is only a quarter full? Could that be one of the reasons we rarely hear new tunes, cos they've all been played earlier, and of course, (and I agree) records shouldn't be replicated?? Winnie:-)
  24. So if the SS DJs, like playing the early spots cos it gives them more artistic licence as it were, why are they not clamouring for early spots every week? I would have thought most DJs liked to play their latest acquisitions, rare or otherwise, so theoretically would like a lot of people in the venue to make the judgement..... Dancer........Listener.........Sleep inducer etc. Sorry don't mean to seem cynical, just not convinced that DJs going on early would choose that spot Winnie:-)
  25. ============ Happy new year to all SSr's as well Winnie:-)
