The Contours
What would I pay for a copy of this on English and on a Gordy import? Are they easy?

Cajun Hart - Unanswered Questions And
Big at the Casino in 73 and 73. There are other versions by Karl Evans, and some one else and also the instrumental got a lot of plays. For what its worth I love it.

First Lp Bought
Mine was a 2nd hand copy of Diana Ross and the Supremes Greatest Hits in 1969ish. Still got it. 2nd was Motown Chartbusters Vol 3. Still got that as well. Some of the earlyish UK motown compilations, particularly the 16 Big Hits ones were tremendous. The best must be the Mike Raven one with the cars on the front, and did Rosko do one just after?

Motown Chartbusters Vol 3
This LP had the same effect on me. What a cover for the era as well. Didn't the cover win a prize?

Full On, Mental, Northern Soul
Oooops! Eddie Parker. Thanks Pete. (Been away this weekend, so haven't been able to pick the tapes/CDs up from the PO. Thanks again). Brian

Northern On American Idol
Never released on a single by Stevie or Tammi. Brenda Holloway also did an inferior version. I thought the version by Paris was awesome, as good as Tammi!

Full On, Mental, Northern Soul
You Don't Mean It by Towanda Barnes and Love You Baby by Eddie Foster. How could anyone off the scene grow to like these?

Old Soul Tunes-new Blood
Hi Phil, I was with Paul that night. We had been to our works Christmas do and got to the Cricket club very late, but we really enjoyed it. A really good mix, and some cracking new (to me ) sounds. I have not been able to make the last 2 due to other commitments, but I hope to be down in April. I will hopefully bring one or two locals with me, who to be fair, are mainly into oldies, but I told them what guys like you and Steve Cato are doing and they are keen to have a listen. Thank you for your nice comments about Paul. He wants a scene to attend in the future and he is genuinely concerned that it will not carry on in its present (varied!) format.

Your Most Exciting Tune Of The Moment
My most played sound of the moment is Gonna Need Magic by the Star Treks on Veep. Also love the alt take of Little Ann, What Should I Do on Dave Hamilton vol 3. Some crackers on there!

Thanks Janey, I'm taking 6 others from work, so after the course is not an option. I'll try to get there at the weekend.

Old Soul Tunes-new Blood
Hi Dan, This is my point exactly. When did I get agressive in my post? Your reply is agressive because you don't like what I say. I've better things to do than listen to any record for 10 hours. If you can't care less what other people listen to, then do you see a scene in the future if everyone had that type of attitude? Again, this is why I like Soul Source, 'cos we don't have to agree. I may not agree with your comments above Dan, but as the saying goes, I'll defend your right to make them, cos thats what the scene is all about. But don't tell the new blood what to listen to, or not what to listen to, or they'll go somewhere where they are made more welcome than is sometimes the case on our scene. In Burnley, my home town, I have seen people not let in to soul nights solely because they were young. Paul has had to personally vouch for them A friendly scene, or a narrow misguided scene that cannot see past next weeks do's?

Old Soul Tunes-new Blood
I love Soul Source. I read it every morning before I start work, I read it every lunch time, and every night after work. Love the debates, and how nobody really takes offence at whatever is said. All opinions are valid and everyone gets their say. However, I am always suprised at the way history is re-written on here. Great records such as Tainted Love were not "Youth Club Records". Tainted Love was possibly the biggest record at the Torch in 72, (maybe next to Love You Baby by Eddie), was massive at Wigan, and was massive at the Mecca. It beggars belief that some of our correspondents do not know the history of records such as these. Just because someone first heard it at a youth club type event, or a scooter rally doesn't mean they can assume it was only ever played there, was once great, now its old, and has "been superceded by "better records" . The truth is the scene needs people like Paul and his mates to turn up. They don't want lecturing, they don't want to listen to oldies all night, they don't want to listen to newies all night. They don't want to be told to go to Woolies for the £4.99 bin CDs, they want to hear good Northern Soul records. It is not their fault they are young. Its not my fault I'm 51 and love oldies, newies, beat ballads, Detroit, Chicago, Philly, the Brill building sounds. I love the artistry of the west coast musicians and artistes who had to try to replicate or out do the eastern type/Motown sounds. I love Motown. Is Love is like an itching in my heart a better Northern record by Timothy Wilson? I think not, but I haven't got a problem with anyone saying it is. In short, I love Northern Soul, but sometimes fail to see where Cotton Hayes fits in, or some of the 70ts and 80ts stuff that is played. Do I have a problem with people liking it, dancing to it, buying it? No I don't, its all part of the scene. If this is the case, why the big superior downer on classics or "records older than 3 months"? The scene is loved by all of us. Do you want it to die with us, or do we want it to survive? Are we afraid of younger people with opinions and wanting to hear what they like? Why pigeonhole them and tell them to go to Oldies nights, when in reality their approach is fresher than some of the Luddites on the scene, and I think we ignore them at the scene's peril. Maybe we are a little bit afraid that they may change things? I don't know, but Paul, you keep on with it son. Keep telling me about the new sounds you are hearing, please don't be afraid to ask about oldies, and stop bloody sending me text messages at 3.00am about a record you have just heard for the first time. Actually, don't stop doing that. Keep your fresh approach, keep enthusing about all aspects of the scene, and enjoy your game of footy at the weekend.

Play Lists, Are They A Good Thing?
Dave, Thanks for reminding me about the Star Treks on your reviews on your site. Wow, managed to get it now, but how has this gone underplayed for this long? For the uninitiated, Dave's Hitsville site has some fantastic reviews, complete with sound files, plus a juke box! Play lists. I love just seeing the titles and labels. Is that sad?

Your All Time Top Five
Can someone take one record out of my top 5 for me, cos I can't possibly leave out The Tangeers, Let My Heart and Soul Be Free. Bloody sold it for a fiver, you would have thought the guy who bought it might have taken pity on a guy with 2 kids and no money!!!!

Your All Time Top Five
I have at least 18 records in my top 5, so as I eat my butties pondering how wonderful life is that we can listen to this beautiful music, I will put these 5 down. Frankie Beverley - If Thats What You Wanted Bobby Hebb - Love Love Love Barbara Mills - Queen of Fools I'm Gone - Eddie Parker (Is Billy Sharae a relation of Eddies?) The Motown one - Currently, Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Marvin and Tammi How can we possibly have a top 5, or top ten, or top twenty? Good thread Dayo. (Can't believe I left the Velvets, Marsha Gee, Mary Love, Mello Souls and all the rest out)

Live Tapes
Pete Sorry for any confusion. Please can you copy them for me and you keep what copies you want. When I get them back from you, I'll let everyone know who's interested through this thread, and I'll do the copying and distribution. I do not want any money for them, but if there is going to be a lot of people wanting copies, a quid or so for the price of a disc, and whatever the postage comes to will be fine. Have a good weekend everyone, and thanks for the help in (hopefully) copying them Pete.

Live Tapes
I will be sending the tapes to Pete S this weekend. I'll let everyone know on this thread when I get them. I'll do copies for Soul Sourcers for the price of postage only. My Mecca tape is in bloody Staffordshire at the moment, but my Wigan and Pendelum ones are all available. Thanks again for all the PMs and assistance. Brian

Value: Detroit Sound Jumping At The Go Go?
Big at Wigan in 73 and 74. Also played at the mecca by IL.

Live Tapes
Thanks for your replies and PMs, particularly Mark (Wiganer1) and Pete S. My tape player has packed in so I may be asking for a little help in transferring them. Didn't realise that they may have degraded so much, so maybe a kind soul sourcer might be my best option as I am a bit baffled by some of the technicalities of the operation!. Pete has offered to transfer them for me, but once I get them on CD if you want a copy just let me know and for the price of the postage they are yours. Thanks again, Brian

Live Tapes
I have many live tapes from 73 onwards from the Mecca with Levine in his prime, Wigan from October 73 onwards and one from the Pendelum. Problem is they are ageing and I daren't play them. Can anyone tell me how to transfer them to CD? The Mecca one shows just how poor Levine was at setting up the discs on the decks, but shows the sheer quality of the records he was breaking in 73. Thanks Brian

Whats Your Ns Claim To Fame ?
Second claim to fame is speaking on the phone to Dean Courteney a couple of months ago, whilst half of Burnley was singing drunkenly I'll always need you at the top of their voices. He found it highly amusing!
