"simon Soussan" Update ?
Okay Ian & I certainly bow to your better experience & knowledge. I did say I wouldn't comment further, but what I would say, you can't just cherry pick, because Winstanley was also plying some drivel sponsored by this man and that material was very influential on the scene at that time & the general quality was absolute dross, this was the halcyon day of Northern Soul. But really don't want to get into a barney with thee as I'll never win......also, I'm a tad drunk at the moment. Respect to thee though. Aid.

Can You Identify These Words?
Here here & it always had that pounding tempo and reminded me of a Northern monster. Aid.

"simon Soussan" Update ?
Am not gonna bang on here being anti-SS, but that's not right, also the scene, when its was thriving at its absolute pinnacle in the later half of the 70's, spiralled right down in it's quality of soul music, exactly because of people like him. It's people like Anderson, Dickie S & Soul Sam to name a few, but certainly not SS, he contributed zilch, except a dearth of cr*p on the turntable. That's the last i'm gonna say on the subject as I've already contributed too much about it. Aid.

"simon Soussan" Update ?
Of course that's fair enough Jaco, my opinion is just one opinion too. I know lots of people I like that, let's say..........flaunt the establishment, that's life. My main gripe here is that his influenced the degration of soul music at that time, that's all. It's not the end of the world, (phew! With that Mayan stuff) It's just my opinion for what it's worth. No worries & who really cares anyway. Aid.

"simon Soussan" Update ?
True Jacko, I understand that, but it's fair to say it was under his sponsorship that a lot of the crap spewing out of the speakers late Wigan was directly down to this tool. Aid.

Fair comment Kev, just he going down into legend as some kind of Northern Soul Keyser Soza (Spelling??) It's like saying.....yeah, The Krays, they were such nice boys & only ever murdered there own kind.....boll*cks......... He would have sold his own mother, end of, what exactly is good about a person like that, prey tell? Aid.

"simon Soussan" Update ?
Got to say, some rose tinted specs on this thread & very interesting reading too, for people like Ian D who know him & can relate & that's fine & right (even though he ripped them off too), but for me, he was nothing but a merchant & for the most part responsible for the demise of the quality of soul music via Russ at the Casino, I know dozens of guys I could write books about, so what? His legacy was bad for the music IMO, for me, he is bad news. Aid.

Are Youngsters Coming Through?
The up & coming Elaine Constantine movie could have big implications for the scene regarding young people, much in the same way The Who's Quadrophenia had on the Mod revival scene of the early 80's. Aid.

I've got to agree with you Chalks, I listened to a set from 'a major dj legend' the other week who I won't name because thats not fair & I can honestly say, no thought, whatsoever went into, purely going through the motions, same old same old. I understand about pleasing 'the majority' and all that, I'm not talking about wanting ultra rare stuff or anything like that, but this was just a bland, boring set & I could actually sense the lack of thought that went into it, if that makes sense, it was disappointing & I wasn't the only one that commented on it too. Aid.

Talking of which, I have probably all/most of Goldmine on cd, the sound quality is consistently really excellent, which does surprise me, considering. Aid.

It make sense Nev, but it's just wouldn't be right would it? I must have about 3 to 4 thousand tracks digitised, ripped from cd's onto hard disk, all good quality ( as I'm into my hi-fi ) that I stream though my system & control with an iPad, giving me instant access on high end sound. But that will never be the same a picking up a record & sticking it on a turntable & wait for the needle to drop or just owning a top record, that is tactile & tangible. Aid.

Don't think it's right to bid that amount on a smashed record, but hey, it's a free world, I wouldn't get all moralistic about it, because it's all relative, some (not me) would argue it wrong to spend that amount on ANY record, let alone the smashed one. I'd rather have one of those Martha Reeves prints that the seller has up for sale anyways. Incidentally, I have bought from this seller in the past they put up some pretty nice discs, pretty sure I got Belita Woods for a couple of dollars. Aid.

I've got a bridge for sale if the winner bidder is interested Aid.

Contemporary Soul Recording Artists
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings isn't bad although sometimes seems something of a 'pastiche' of what soul should be, but still better than most, especially that endless list of female British white R&B artists (usually with one name) that came along and queue around the block once Amy died & the record money men realised a new revenue stream, they get lorded to high heaven by our media but wouldn't know real soul if it walk right up a smacked them in the gob. I also quite like The Frank Pops Ensemble. Aid.

Hy-Tones On Ebay- Don't Even Know My Name
I don't like it, sounds like some 70's t.v. sitcom theme tune to me. But to each their own. Aid.

Djs Playing For Themselves..?
Hey Kev, OFF TOPIC, but I've just downloaded your avatar album from HDTracks.com run by Linn, in 192kHz high bit resolution and it sounds absolute awesome. Always loved the Velvets, now even more in HD. Aid.

Used To Be Cool, Now Crap
I always liked at Babe Ruth at Wigan to be honest, bit wierd or 'progressive' & questionable if its even soulful, in fact, lets be honest, it's not soulful at all, but it was catchy & belting out though muffled speakers to a packed dance floor, then it did the job in 'that' atmosphere at 'that' time. I say the same about a lot about things in life, history, morally or political, it's unfair to retrospectively judge anything with the benefit hindsight with 'todays' standard & apply it backdated. Aid.

Omnibus 45 Set/ Curtis Liggins
To be fair, most of the ones I've seen have had 're-issue' clearly marked, there was another Two plus Two on Velgo the other day, trouble is, they are 'lookalikes' so buyer beware. Aid.
