Andre Williams R.I.P.
Bettye LaVette was a close friend of his thru life. She posted this message up on Facebook .. This man, Andre Williams, taught me SO much about songs, choosing them, singing them, the difference between cocaine and heroin, how to stay up late and talk all night long, and hold onto your thought, no matter how high you get. To get enough rest to do your show the next day, the most horrible jokes you ever heard, and how to maintain looking like a lady through all of that. I loved him so much. I have lost another of the planks in the bridge that I came across on. I'll try to keep the bridge going, but I'll always remember that HE and that bunch, taught me how to swim. RIP from LaVette - which is what he called me.

David White R.I.P.
Philly studio supremo David White passed today, John Madara made the announcement. David worked with loads of the top soul artists; Bobby Wells, Johnny Caswell, Bunny Sigler, Sweet Three, Cindy Scott, Tymes, Chubby Checker … right thru to the likes of Fat Larry's Band. Another very sad loss.

Home Of The Blues #8
Published back in March 67, this edition of the mag included interviews with some acts who'd recently toured the UK. I know back then, UK mag interviews followed a pretty standard format ………. where are you from, how'd you get together, why was "xxx" selected to be your new 45, what do you make of UK audiences, etc …. BUT … if anyone has an actual copy of the mag, I'd be interested to learn the facts highlighted in the Soul Sisters & Alvin Cash articles.

Soul books
Not about soul music as such, but has strong connections ... … author Shaun Knapp will be launching his book, Mods: Two City Connection, at our Dungeon Club Reunion at The Newmarket on March 29th from 3pm -5pm. The book utilises first-hand accounts and photographs that tell the story of the sixties Mod scene in Nottingham and Leicester. It also forms the basis of the Mods: Shaping a Generation exhibition which takes place in Leicester in April, May and June.

Some decent 70's (& later) soul / jazz funk / disco items coming, less 60's stuff (though still a few album goodies). I'll have to try to get a copy of Greg Belson's selection.

Carr's Beach, Maryland -- Top 60's Black Venue
Some shows staged there in 62/63 … $1 admission before noon (or 50c for some shows), who'd pay that much ??

Carr's Beach, Maryland -- Top 60's Black Venue
The Sheppard Bros & Sputnik outfit (who were on with the Drifters) sound like a Jackson 5 type outfit … their 45 is obviously from around the mid 60's, anyone know when they formed ??

Carr's Beach, Maryland -- Top 60's Black Venue
I posted up a show ad for Carr's Beach in the Jerry O book thread … but I thought it might be an opportune time to shed a bit more light on this 'black' 50's / 60's venue. In it's time, it attracted all the top doo wop / jazz / gospel / blues & soul acts. Some of the shows from there were broadcast live by 2 local radio stns (though I doubt recordings of any of those shows still exist). The booking agent for the venues for many years (to the mid 60's) was Ru-Jac owner Rufus Mitchell. Coz of this, lots of his acts (& other Balto acts such as Kenny Hamber) got to play the venue -- though most times they were last minute additions to the bill as an opening act. Coz of this, they rarely made it onto the ads for the shows there. All the shows were staged on weekends (or public holiday days) & they were only staged (of course) in the summer season. When segregation came to the Baltimore / Maryland area, local blacks went off to spend time on previously 'white beaches' and Carr's Beach (+ the similar Sparrow's Beach) died a death. Very little remains (on the ground) these days to commemorate what happened there back in time …. https://www.carrsbeach.com/index.html most of the ads on display are from July 66 (the Tom & Jerrio ad I posted on the other thread was from 65). But top acts appeared almost every weekend from the mid 50's thru to the late 60's. If anyone has a particular interest in the venue, they could do worse than get a copy of my Kenny Hamber book which covers the shows in detail.

I guess this is the 1958 track & not the one with a similar title from 1970.

Lorraine Rudolph - Lorri Rudolph - Same singer ?
A more recent recording by her (+ a bit of a bio that came with it) …. Classic R&B sound similar to what an Aretha Franklin / Charlie Wilson collaboration might sound like. Power house vocalist Loraine Rudolph supported vocally by a soulful Jerry Wilder deliver a rousing rendition of Loraine's timely lyric. With "Let's Go Back" Ms. Rudolph invites us to revisit the more courteous and moral traditions of the past that are sorely missed in today's 'right turn on red' society. A funky guitar solo by none other than guitarist extraordinaire, Rock Tipton over an old school urban track by Lincoln Ross makes for an excellent home demo with a big studio sound and a message that will never go out of style. ……… not a bad effort at all ………… https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/lorainerudolph If she can still sing like that, someone should fetch her over here for a live show.
