Matt, Most people who put records up on here asking for offers are just trying to find out how much people will pay for them and/or how in demand they are. They probably only sell them if they get a surprisingly high offer I really like the ones that say "no silly offers" - What on earth does that mean? Generally these are accompanied by an artist & title I have never heard of never mind have any idea of price. I guess they only want to either highlight the fact that they have a record AND will sell it or alternatively will only sell it to another member of their small social group. There's a lot of assumptions on here. I've always taken the view that if people ask for offers that is the start of negotiations so I make an offer at the least I want to pay expecting a reply containing either a figure that is the most they are expecting or a simple "***k off!". To be honest I've given up responding to alleged sales posts asking for offers as mostly you don't get a reply. Just MHO Cheers Paul

Actually I think it could be rocket science if you take all the variables involved. (Non-mathematicians look away now) Let X = record price The next thing to do is list the variables: Let R = Rarity (possibly 2 variables - L = label & T= tune) Let C = Collectability (difficult label no, related to certain artist, etc) Let I = In-demandness Let Q = Quality of tune (again possibly 2 variables - E = listenability & D = danceability) Let S = Previous known sales prices Let P = Previous purchasers Let Z = purchase price Let Q = quantity in the market for sale (not to be mistaken for quantity owned by dealer or confused with rarity) Next we have to decide what to start the equation with and then weight each variable (ie determine a scale for it) to know what effect it has on the starting variable to give the price. I would say the start point would normally be previously known sales price (if known - if not ?) so the start of the equation is: X = P .... Everything should then act as a factor on that so we get: X = P() So the next thing to do is put an understandable scale against each variable to determine the effect it has ..... .... errr ...... maybe that's why it is difficult to price records! If anyone would like to take this further please do.

My tuppence worth: I buy and sell records to buy records, I've always kept my personal finances and my record buying seperate otherwise its a slippery slope. There are only a few people buying records for 1000's and these generally fall into three categories: - Those with loads of wonga who can afford to; - those with loads of records who rarely buy these days but occassionally add to their collection a genuinely rare record, sometimes funding the purchase by selling from their vast collection; - and finally those that want the world yesterday and will put themselves into financial peril to get it. After ten years of buying and selling records (which is only a short time in the scheme of things Northern Soul) I take the view that records will come to me eventually. So when stuff comes up and I can afford it I buy it. Patience is the key, there are thousands of records to go at so there is always something worth having. As for your House records - bung em in the loft and wait 15 - 20 years for the revival. All your contemporaries will have loads of dosh and start buying records again at vastly inflated prices

On what basis were you asked to DJ? Your ability to put a set together? Your ability to read a dance floor? Your mate was running a do? You had some decks?

Ah! Didn't realise it was the infamous Radwill, I was done by him myself some years ago. Only for a couple of relatively cheap 45's but it wasn't pleasant.

I must disagree on a couple of points here Firstly, as I remember it I was Djing, they formation danced to The Profiles - Take A Giant Step. Secondly, they were Dutch. I blame you - you'd let anyone in. Mind you, I agree that they didn't look out of place We had some very strange bods down there at times. That Marc Almond walked past the door once. What was this thread about again? Oh yes; Why do people run Soul nights etc - because they want to I suppose and they've got the gumption to go ahead and do it. We started These Old Shoes because we thought it would be a great thing to do and there wasn't much on in London at the time (1998) other than the 100 club and some occasional (excellent) nights put on by Keb Darge & Ion. We did it to play and hear music and have a bit of fun, we hoped that others would come along and do the same, surprisingly they did. I'd love to start up a club again, it was great fun. Weeknight R&B, Popcorn, Northern & Latin in York anyone? Does anyone really put on a Soul night to make money? I very much doubt it. As an aside, there are some bloody cynical, moaning, mithering threads on here at the moment. Has everyone lost their marbles along with their perspective? (Might start a thread on this somewhere). You may have hit the nail on the head there actually, perhaps that is the way forward. There were/are some clubs (not northern soul as far as I know) in London that decided not to allow entry to just anyone as they found that the "wrong" people were coming and spoiling the night. As everyone pretty much knew everyone else who was like minded they made the clubs invite only. The result was a club full of people who liked the music being played and also the other people in the club. Hey presto, good club and great atmosphere. Just an idle thought .. Cheers Paul
