They should bring them back, keep undesirables out
  2. Yer right mate it ain't dead. It might not be to the liking of many but it's still alive and licking. I still think its best days are behind it but that's not to say we can't have many more good times. End of the day just do what makes each of us happy.

Unfortunately due to illness, one half of a couple can't make the weekend. We have had a shuffle round and we now have a SINGLE room available. One double has since been taken leaving one double. If you wish to come along on your own and you want the single shout up quick. If you want a double shout up quick. Hopefully the weather today is a sign of things to come and we get that BBQ on the Saturday afternoon.

  5. In answer to your question Mick, number 3 for me probably. Still love the music and always will, still enjoy a decent night out. No longer go out for the sake of it. It'll be that way for as long as I can get out I think.

Still time to book one of the last remaining rooms for a weekend of Summer Soul. Let yer hair down before the kids break up for the summer. Lots to do around the hotel, lots of Roma ruins and superb riverside walks.

  8. There has been dismay in every era over the direction of the scene, the arguments today are the same arguments going back to the wheel. Each era thinks they had the best of it but I do think the best days are behind it. As for the direction, it's not up to us really, those who come forward to carry the scene forward will decide the direction. Not many of us like change especially the change in musical trends. I didn't like the change towards the funky stuff, especially the stuff that was far away from what we grew up with but I guess the lack of quality 60s made others look elsewhere. Others didn't like the modern in years gone by. There will always be something for someone to complain about.
  9. I know The Meaning never been out of favour if you ask me, the other side has had its fair share, never thought it was that popular though
  10. Both sides been played for donkeys. One side was a Keb spin at Stafford.
  11. No one knows everything , but if you are out and about enough you get to know just about everything that is being played. Imagination has gone and every facet of the scene (upfront, crossover etc) is an oldies scene. Like you say there are niche venues where some do try to keep it refreshing.
  12. Phil is right to a certain extent, the scene is flogging a dead horse but there are still some quality events and maybe it will get the "proper" revival it needs at some point. Most of us have grown up with the scene and the scene has grown up with us. Apart from a couple of hotspots there are very few youngsters, Bristol and London seem to be bucking the trend but they have large university crowds and social media is a big influence in those parts. I just go to the venues that appeal to me, listen to the music that appeals to me, listen to the right people and put those who rewrite the history right if they will listen. We all still have something to learn as well. I have to agree with the internet having g a detrimental affect, YouTube the death of crate digging, discogs and eBay the death of record bars. Digging in the record bars, it was how we learnt most things, not a quick google...its all too easy for most these days.

  16. I've had mine for over a week, maybe two but I'm moving house and everything is in storage. I opened it today and the look and feel is just as you would expect, QUALITY! Decks are out of storage and will be set up tomorrow, these will be on the decks.
  17. I'm moving house again and only just managed to get this transferred to iTunes and then my phone. Since then it's been on replay all day. Quality all the way, Thom Bell, genius.
  18. Guy Hennigan returns for two hours more music and banter.

I don't know where these "soul, northern and Motown" nights are that you used MP3s. I can only imagine they were nights in hotels etc, not aimed generally at the scene itself. Even the mainstream ev ents use vinyl. Welcome btw and condolences on the loss of your wife.
  20. Maybe in a future box set. As far as I know Ace has the tapes. If not there is a good few in this country who would make one available to take a recording from. They received them from the pressing plant a few weeks ago so I assume they were able to get them out early because of this. Only a week early anyway.

Used to get it on a lot of tape swaps at one time in 80s. Jim Wensiora spin then Rob Marriott.

I don’t know any A list dj using a laptop at venues, maybe at some divvy club? Mp3s have never been welcomed whilst I have been going, it has always been about the bit of plastic, even if that is a boot or carver.

  24. Chalky reviewed Eddiefoster's review on an event in Soul Nights

In a sea of mediocrity, baggy trousers and divs, there are still some venues who do it and get it right. The Ukrainian at Ashton under the guidance of Chris Churm is one such club. With the helping hands of Simon Ingham, Phil Dunn and Mick Howard this little Club has progressed over the years to one of the best in the land, it is certainly my favourite night out. With one or two stellar guests each month it has imagination and flair few can match, a full house every month made up of people who were there in the early days of the scene to some with youth on their side but all ready to welcome records what they have heard before and records they have probably never heard. Music policy...there isn't one, the Djs are left to play what they want and it works. That certainly was the case this week and with a rare foray north for world’s best rare soul DJ Mark “Butch” Dobson. We arrived at the venue 20 minutes prior to opening with two extra speakers to boost the listening pleasure and there was a queue already. Phil Dunn kicked the night off with his usual mix to get the floor moving. Mick Howard ands Simon Ingham followed with tow exceptional sets of rare soul. It was then time for this months guest, the UKs, no the world’s best Rare Soul spinner Mark “Butch” Dobson. There was no prisoners taken, you know when the opening record is Jesse James (Love Is Alright) you know you are in for something good. 90 minutes of some the finest records from the 60s and 70s and without looking probably the 80s, a full floor to each, records from his earlier days to his more recent plays. The highlight being the Mighty Lovers cover up! There has been some exceptional nights at The Ukrainian but this was the best. It is really great to see people like Butch enjoying themselves at such a venue, he described it as "fantastic" and having "not heard a bad record". People like Tim Ashibende returning and looking right at ease enjoying himself, all this confirming that this little club is doing something right. Hopefully both will return to grace the decks in the future. I’m looking forward to next month already with Roger Banks, Derek Pearson Chris Penn and William Mailey the guests DJs.
