Etta Is Betta Than Evvah
30 Years of Kent and the quality just keeps coming. There are plenty of essential buys from Ace/Kent/BGP due for release in the coming months and this one featuring Etta James 1976 LKP plus bon us tracks is quite rightly one of thise essential buyts for lovers of R&B/Soul music. Here's what Mick Patrick has to say about the release. Released in 1976, “Etta Is Betta Than Evvah!” was the final album of Etta James’ tumultuous 16-year tenure at Chess Records. The album is issued here on CD for the first time, together with 10 bonus titles from the mid-70s. The self-produced opener, ‘Woman (Shake Your Booty)’, is a funky rewrite of a song Etta had recorded, as ‘W.O.M.A.N’, for Modern in 1955 and again for Chess in 1971. Etta’s road band, led by guitarist Brian Ray, backed her on the track. Two other titles on the LP, ‘Only A Fool’ and Randy Newman’s ‘Leave Your Hat On’, had been released previously on 1973’s “Etta James” set, produced by Gabriel Mekler, celebrated for his work with Steppenwolf, Janis Joplin and others. By 1976 Chess Records had been purchased by All Platinum, at whose New Jersey studio the bulk of “Etta Is Betta Than Evvah!” was recorded with former Motown baritone sax hero Mike Terry producing. The players on the sessions were the All Platinum house band, otherwise known as funk/disco hitmakers the Rimshots. ‘Little Bit Of Love’ and ‘I’ve Been A Fool’ were penned by Freddie Beckmeier, the bass player with Etta’s own band. The remainder of the album comprised well-chosen covers of Ann Peebles’ ‘A Love Vibration’, ‘Groove Me’ (King Floyd), ‘Blinded By Love’ (Johnny Winter), ‘Jump Into Love’ (Rufus) and ‘Ain’t No Pity In The Naked City’ (Pat Lundy). None of the tracks Etta recorded in Philadelphia in 1973 were released at the time but a few have surfaced in recent years, among them her revival of ‘You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’’, the first of our bonus selections. Next up are three more tracks from the “Etta James” album. Written by Tracy Nelson, who recorded the song with her group Mother Earth in 1968, and featuring a string arrangement by the great Jimmie Haskell, ‘Down So Low’ was described by Etta in her autobiography as “the hardest song I ever tried to sing in my life”. Haskell also supplied the edgy string lines on ‘All The Way Down’. ‘God’s Song (That’s Why I Love Mankind)’ was one of three Randy Newman songs on the album. Etta’s 1974 LP, “Come A Little Closer”, is the source of the next five bonus selections. Six songs on the LP, including the title track and the wordless ‘Feeling Uneasy’, were co-written by Gabriel Mekler, who likely also influenced Etta to cut Steppenwolf’s ‘Power Play’. Mekler had plans to make a television film about Bessie Smith with Etta in the lead role. The project never materialised but did yield her Grammy-nominated recording of ‘St. Louis Blues’. Confirming her affinity with the songs of Randy Newman, Etta wrote, “The song I loved singing most, though, was ‘Let’s Burn Down The Cornfield’.” The final bonus track is a version of Tom Jans’ yearning country ballad ‘Lovin’ Arms’, the only recording ever to be released from Etta’s her shelved 1974 sessions with producer Jerry Wexler. Who mentioned criminal? Who in their right mind would bid $800 for this record when the scans are there as plain as day.....to say you didn't see the scans or bid for a laugh simply makes you what your user name is. I know all about you and your history as do many others so you don't have to spell it out to me.

Are Youngsters Coming Through?
Have to agree Joan, had to work hard at it back in the 80's without the internet and countless guides telling you what to do. Now everyone simply wants to be told everything or google it. Like you I wouldn't have had it any other way, loved every minute.

The first one I have is the Rare Soul on CD, The Vocal Groups. Soul Supply. I've seen it and others fetch a fair bit of cash.

Either you have your eyes and ears shut or your first line is tongue in cheek. Over the years I've seen DJ's buy a collection, gone straight in at the rare end and not even own a ten pound 45. I've consistently seen DJ's pay way over the odds for records, I'm sure many others have as well. There aren't that many top DJ's IMO. I've never understood the need for some to DJ when they clearly don't cut the mustard. I see some so called top DJ's who can't put a set together for toffee despite having a box full of rare records, and lets be honest that is the only reason they are behind the decks because of the money they spend, not because of the skill in putting a set together. There's plenty of records, trouble is all the so called DJ's are chasing the same few and ignoring the many. One or two play a record, the rest then have to have the same record instead of using a bit of imagination and seeking something else, it isn't hard but as is the norm (especially in the internet age) everyone wants someone else to do the hard work. We could argue all day and this is going away from the original topic so I'm off to find something more constructive to do. BTW I've the set of Goldmine CD's, including the very first one, are they worth owt?

By top DJ, do you mean one who has been at the collecting lark for ever or one who has bought a collection? I rarely use ebay Nev these days, bought the odd LP, I've virtually stopped buying 45's from anywhere, I refuse to pay silly prices. I'm not dictating what anyone should pay, far from it, I don't think anyone is. People are complaining at being forced to pay over inflated prices for a 45 simply because someone has paid a ridiculous amount at an auction. This then becomes the norm. It has been proved countless times a quick search on the same night the auction finished the same 45 can be had for far less on here not to mention dealer sites. I don't think anyone is complaining at a seriously rare 45 fetching a lot of money, what does irk many is collectors paying seriously rare prices for not so seriously rare records. You only have to see the comments on many topics about auctions on here.

Are Youngsters Coming Through?
Most youngsters that are around do not travel, that is a fact. The youngsters are in the main in large cities with say a university, Manchester, London. They tend to stay local and certainly don't go to all-nighters in number large enough to keep the all-nighter scene going. I doubt these youngsters will support their own local scene when they grow up a bit and work, mortgage and family pressures come to the fore.

The US sellers aren't taking the p*ss, its the idiots paying way over the top prices for records, be they records that are f*cked and paying mint prices or simply paying far more for records than they usually sell, you are one of those or was one of those that often highlighted such sales. People are paying way over the odds when a quick search on the internet will source the record far cheaper from a dealer or seller. There is a topic on here almost daily of some lunatic buying a record at a massively inflated price. They are f*cking it up for collectors who are then forced to pay the inflated prices.

There's many on this scene who haven't given a sh*t about condition for a long time, surprised some haven't realised this. It isn't about condition with many over here now it is an ego thing as in "ooh look what I've just spent £xxx on and I'm now DJing with it". As Tony says the Yanks must be having a right laugh at Brit collectors. Like you say Richard I can't believe anyone bid on this without seeing the photo's, must have been wasted.

Dynamites Feat Charles Walker
It never fails to amaze me how crap the promoters of these concerts are, never heard a thing about it to be honest. If anyone hears of any artist doing a show anywhere give me a shout and i'll make sure everyone on here knows about them.

I would imagine much of Cleveland back in the 60's and 70's was ruled by the mob(s). I was told Way Out was primarily a way for the monsters to launder money.

People can knock it all they like but it rams every dance floor everywhere. It's not soulful, the lyrics might not be great, her voice might not be great but it is a great northern dancer.

Postage Cost
I've just posted one "Internationally Signed For" to Norway and it cost £8.08 for one 45 in standard mailer. I was told that was the best method as tracking and signatures all the way.
