Re Activisation Of Oldies
there's plenty of good forgotten oldies out there, plenty that had very little exposure in the first place.

How Rare Is A Rare Record?
Quality to some extent will always be a factor in the price. But I've seen very rare records fetch a pittance when other records which number in the hundreds still fetch a few hundred quid, stupidity IMO. but half those buying seem to be trophy hunters rather than collectors

Cover-ups What Do You Think Of Them?
Couple of years Boba. Some other records have remained covered for over ten years cause no one could find another or never knew what it was. Junior McCants was covered for something like 8 years or so. Mello Souls for quite a few years.

Cover-ups What Do You Think Of Them?
thing is tho' no one knew it or realised that it was Butch's Masqueraders cover up.

How Rare Is A Rare Record?
I thought I took a copy of the scan of the last one I saw for sale but can't seem to find it. There's a scan of the flip on John Ridleys site... https://www.sirshambling.com/artists/W/walter_b.htm

How Rare Is A Rare Record?
seen a few over the years the last one being I think £400. Would agree hard one to get. Can anyone keep up with this these days exactly but it should be the rarity that dictates the price.

How Rare Is A Rare Record?
It's not as rare as the price they have been going for would suggest IMHO. There are many records way over priced due to demand rather than supply.

Cover-ups What Do You Think Of Them?
Dunno Bob, I didn't think they were the same I thought Rainy Day was rarer than Cry No More, seen far more of the Cry No More. The price is down to the interest created by Butch and the fact that it is a big record for him also the lack of copies in circulation. Most records Butch plays others want and are willing to pay.

Cover-ups What Do You Think Of Them?
I agree but they still create interest which can only be good even if it is for a short space of time. does anyone know who the Parliaments are on Cabell? Doubt they will ever benifit from the record. Any royalties from a cd would probably be swallowed up in costs to the label owner etc.

Mel Williams
I was referring to the Mel Williams demo John not Danny Harrison which I know isn't rare. I knew of just the one Mel Williamsd demo until told on Friday by someone that they'd just got one too.

Cover-ups What Do You Think Of Them?
quality soul is getting harder and harder to find and some collectors put a great deal of effort in to find the next biggie. Covering them up gives them a little exclusivity until they are uncovered, surely they are entitled to that for the effort they put in to keep things fresh otherwise what would the point be? Might as well just pack the Djing in and just collect. I doubt very much it would do the original artists any favours one it's uncovered either. Take the last big cover up to get uncovered...Butch's Masqueraders which turned out to be The Parliaments. What are they gonna get out of it? Sod all. The fact the record is so good and it was covered up created lots of interest in the record. Half the fun is trying to find out what they are!!

Cover-ups What Do You Think Of Them?
I know current cover ups that fit none of the above criteria and loads from the past that don't either.

Cover Up
Doesn't everyone try and get as much money as they can for the records they have for sale. What Tommy is doing isn't the first time and won' tbe the last. Seen many cover ups in sales boxes and lists. There's always a risk in buying records of more turning up, covered up or not. I bet if you had a cover up which was a big record for you you wouldn't be best pleased if some clever tw*t uncovered it on here or elsewhere.

Cover Up
How on earth you can compare what Tommy has said to something that Levine did with the 4 Vandals I'll never know. He isn't being deceitful or trying to rip anyone off so I can't see a problem. All Tommy is doing is showing a bit of respect to the DJ(s) who are paying this covered up and full marks to him. If a little more respect/etiquette was shown the scene would be a better place for it.

Value Anyone?
Mandells was about $300, Carpets over $1000. Not seen either recently.
-
Value Anyone?
I would agree, although Carpets looks better last couple I can find both went for over $1000. Last Mandells I can find was laround $300 although it did look a tad rough Think I prefer the Carpets to be honest....bit smoother! Not a great scan of Carpets but best I can find.

as described by JM....the original has the uk style anti slip grips round the edge, the counterfiet is an exact copy without the anti slip grips.- Mel Williams
maybe, but it's probably £250 if the seller watching the auction- Mel Williams
Just how rare is it on a demo John? I only knew of one till Friday when someone told me they'd just acquired on a trip stateside. I agree with your 4 figure valuation too. It's a record I've rated for years since Paul Donnelly put it me on a tape years ago and Andy Dyson has been playing it for few years. John Philips was the only other copy I knew about till the few thats been about in recent times. - Gil Scott Heron - Bottle
