  1. What if the rare soul scene evolved/developed in such a way that the central focus of the scene, geographically speaking , was centred somewhere OUTSIDE the UK ; with the biggest (and youngest) crowds, leading collectors and DJ's , best venues and events , most talented dancers located elsewhwere .... Would that be far too unbearable to contemplate ????
  2. Paul, why do you regret selling the 45's and having the LP's ? Better to have the LP than the 45 IMO !!! Take the Carol Anderson LP, not only has Sad Girl, but also a couple of other great dancers and deep tracks not to mention a great cover photo of Carol !!!! SFSLP (Society For the Superiority of LP's)
  3. Yep, Incidentally, Cause You're Mine Now, on the LP, is a FANTASTIC northern/70's dancer
  4. R.B. 5. No, Gentlemen Four were on Sonday, distributed by Wand.
  6. No, This Could Be The Night is better ! But most everything he did is good . Best to get the LP which is great from start to finish and puts a lot of big money LP's to shame on sheer music quality alone.
  7. Great tune, and off the top of my head , I know of: The Gentleman Four on Sonday Rosey Grier on ABC/Probe The Masqueraders on Wand The Dynamics on Cotillion All great renditions but I think the Gentlemen Four just shades the others. I think there's other versions too. Anyone ?
  8. Serious query now, and not meaning to be disrespectful , but is this comment about all copies having hiss another urban myth ?

Interesting Sean, but why would Chess in the US have issued it a second time when it had never been a hit in the first place in the US ? Unless its an early 70's press to cash in on the success at Westbound. I always assumed the latter issue of Denise Lasalle WAS a UK jobbie, mid 70's , Polygram in the UK at that time had Chess didn't they, and they were issuing UK Polydor 45's without centres as well weren't they ? Think I'll also have to dig out my UK Joy Lovejoy from storage which I could swear WAS concave around the centre and very similar to the Denise Lasalle in appearance ? Where's Tony Rounce when we need him ?

Isn't the latter one a UK press from the 70's , no centre? They did the same in the UK with Joy Lovejoy, did they not ?
  11. How wonderful to discover that this definitely does exist on a seven Currently being offered on ebay. SOLID SOLUTION. think about it girl great trackItem number: 110168062853
  12. Extremely nice HB Barnum produced version by Tina Mason on her Capitol LP.
  13. Dionne's Scepter output was almost exclusively in an instantly recognisable style, of course. But were any of these tracks played on the northern scene ? Frank Elson used to write in Blues & Soul that "Window Wishing" was popular at the Wheel . Heard on a tape a track of hers from '67 called " I Never Knew What You Were Up To" , an utterly brilliant dancer and totally different to her usual Bacharach / David work. LP only ?

Jerry Butler' s version is EVERY bit as good , in its own way. I presume that Jerry's version however rarely gets played because Jerry's is LP only The same Jerry Butler LP also contains the brilliant fingersnapping dancer "One Woman Man"
  15. Very interesting too that most people who were regulars at the Torch have no hesitation in saying that the Stylistics were the best live act to have ever appeared at the Torch amongst many great acts.

No , the LP and 45 versions are exactly the same, any perceived difference between the two is yet another urban myth from certain collectors' fertile imaginations ....
  17. Yes, when all is said and done, I believe the Dells should be regarded as the greatest RnB/Soul male vocal group of all time, even ahead of the Temptations. That estimation is based on all possible criteria such as: quality and diversity of the group's recorded work, number of hits, influence, longevity etc etc My all time top ten of RnB/Soul vocal groups goes something like this: 1 Dells 2 Temptations 3 Drifters 4 Impressions 5 Four Tops 6 Isley Brothers 7 Coasters 8 O'Jays 9 Spinners 10 Manhattans Honourable mentions to the Dramatics, Blue Notes, Whispers, Platters, Intruders, Delfonics, Chi Lites.
  18. Mark, as you are a man of good taste, do the best thing and get the original Natural Four LP, all of which is brilliant from start to finish. And make sure you play the LP BEFORE the next jock with the original 45 in his box , as a show of force to both the "couldn't be arsed carrying LP's about" brigade as well as the "you can't play LPs out" brigade !
  19. The contact from Jesse Davis must be attributed to the the power of Soul Source ! It was only last week on here that we had a thread going on Jesse Davis and his LP with that great version of "Stormy". Obviously word travels through cyberspace ... Let's hope someone brings him over to perform his Northern biggies ...
  20. Don't think so, known chronology on the group indicates Traynor was long gone by '68 when Hung Up was recorded, and IMO vocal on Hung Up is quite different from Traynor.
  21. Nice one Pete, but my understanding was that they initially had Jay Traynor of Up and Over fame on lead .... and then he left to be replaced by David (Jay) Black. But on Hung Up the lead vocal doesn't sound like David Black ...
  22. Current values and scans if possible please : UK stock copy UK Demo US stock copy US Demo (rare?) Anyone know for sure who sang lead on this track ? Thanks
  23. Have a read of Martin's own current Sales list ... if you can
  24. Superior (IMO )version by Jimmy Holiday on his LP
