  9. I just watched a great dvd of the Leicester Oddfellows nighter (with dance comp) from 1984 and its great to see not only the superb dancers, but the WIDE variety of music played during the night, including some funk!! I am constantly amazed that people dont seem to remember that it was always played at nighters or in rooms attached to certain venues (like Cleethorpes, Blackpool, Palais etc). It was nice to see the dvd just to remind myself that i wasn't imagining it! So why the big debate now? Why all the fuss? I recommend watching this dvd to remind yourselves of how we ALL used to fill a floor and tolerate, appreciate and dance to a wide variety of music. Its not a present day Northern scene phenomenon...

  11. https://www.soul-sour...funky-soul-mix/ Great thread! This is an old mix, but with varied tunes on it that all have a so called funk edge. I like em all!
  12. Its been a part of the scene since it began in one form or another. I think the fear and upset is down to a mis understanding of the term 'funk'. People seem to think it means James Brown or Bootsy Collins, but its a wide genre., Frankie Crocker, the Crow and many other long term staples of the scene can be called funk. I think its time to let go of the tiny boxes and just dance to good, black, soulful music. I have noticed recently that a lot of dealers have started calling all sorts of shite 'funk' , as they see it as a new selling route. Also a lot of djs being advertised as 'funk/soul/ when they havent got a tune in their box of any quality that would fall into a decent description of the genre (with regards to the Northen scene). The recycled music angle is also a bit of a curve ball, because a lot of the tunes, though known by funk collectors, were not broken by them on any scene and the funk scene is very small in the uk. A lot of us have been collecting soulful funk since the 70s, so its not a new departure, just the time to be playing good music to people who are growing tired of the same 500 tunes that have graced the decks non stop for 30 years. Basically you know a good tune when you hear it or your feet feel like moving to it and there is good and shite in all genres and sub genres embraced by the scene.
  13. There are loads of GREAT new discoveries, just a sad fact that only a very few venues will put on Djs who play these. John Harris Sacred Four Wally Coco Black smoke Band Sir guy King Roosevelt Delon washington Wild Honey Third Creation Dynamic Corvettes There are loads!! Thats just a few that i was pushing for the last 3/4 years (mainly via DDA) . NOW, they are getting plays, because they are being presented to the public (dancefloor) via the 'accepted Big name' route. Its all so very safe and 'old boy' network dominated that these tunes take 2 to 5 years to reach the main floors, after they have been championed by lesser known djs in smaller clubs. I stopped going out to events because the music is so F---king repetitive , hackneyed and boring. That situation is not down to lack of new discoveries, but the fear (of clearing a floor for a second) and apathy of promoters. Also i feel a lot of 'big name dj' venues avoid putting on lesser known djs that play stuff they dont know because of egos. They prefer wait until they have tracked the tune down themselves, which is often 2 years after the event . All very controversial i know, but its a fact. Anyone wanting to buy new discoveries or lesser know stuff can PM me , as im selling up after Berlin on March 12th.

Always crap when records are re pressed. Glad i sold my original a while back....Must be a piss off for those who own the real thing!
  17. Its rare now , cos eveyones starting to catch on. Got mine 2 years back for £75. Wouldnt sell it for less than £150. AND it will rise with exposure...
  18. Exactly my point. Its mostly the ones who never went who like it and the 'weekend soulie' types who got into it for a month or so in the 70;s and used to come as tourists. Forget wigan, its just so crap on every level, a dancing competition that concludes in a 'spin off' choreographed by someone who obviously couldn't spin i presume. The same extras in muliple areas at the same time trying to give the illusion of a full venue. Badies who act like crap cartoon caricatures and terrible editing between original (and now hackneyed footage) and new footage....just f--ing awful. Amateur film making at its worst. Oh, i forgot, " at least they had a go". That seems to be the apathetic and oft cried response from people who used to care....the only citeria that the scene demands nowadays.
  19. But that costs electricity and not sure im prepared to invest such a valuable resource in that film. I could make a cup of tea, which is far more exciting...
