  1. Seen this on Mannys auction site, George Smith "Pretty Little Girl" Laurie, and wondered if anyone had a MP3 of it, always loved Gene Chandlers version and according to the blurb this is far better. (cant get "Listen" link to work!) Anyone? BH
  2. I was refused entry to a record store in Miami because "some fat guy from England had left the shelves in a total mess" We could ask for titles from the counter but after half an hour of getting nowhere gave up. After asking about the fat guy we worked out it was............you guessed it. Went up to Ft Lauderdale to Sid Arthurs oldies and what a total contrast the guy sent out for coffee and do-nuts let us browse the stock and play recods on the shop deck. Always did what JM said regarding accents and said we came from Australia/New Zealand. BH
  3. I borrowed a load of compilation cds off a mate to load onto my digital jukebox (Which I love, 5500 tunes and counting. Put it on random, brilliant) anyway I always hated Eric Lomax "Seven the loser" when it was first played, 7? I heard it on monday after not hearing it for over twenty plus years and cant understand why I never liked it. Have you ever had a total change of mind about a record??? Strang thing is the record has always been the same, its us humans that change BH

I remember reading an article (could have been Dave Godin) trying to define what soul was and it went something like this....When Wilson Picket guested on the Tom Jones Show They sang a duet, whilst Tom sang with soul Wilson sang from the soul. The fact I remember that from thirty plus years shows the mans greatness. "Mr Magic Man" A great loss BH
  13. Know what you mean. I've just got Jimmy Bailey "Everytime" Columbia from Manny after several years chasing it and it was only £15, bargain BH
  14. George Freeman it is then B (f*****D off) H
  15. Just been reading through the programme from last weeks excellent weekender at blackpool and the saturday timetable lists 17 hour spots with only two djs being used twice. All the djs are first class so is there a case for longer spots at this type of event (4 rooms)? I was never looking at my watch waiting for the next dj, in fact never really noticed any handovers, just enjoyed a continuous stream of great music. BH
  16. "Afternoon of the rhino" must be in with a shout. Octapus with four drum kits. BH

  18. I'll get stick for this choice but I dont care, the guy sang an all time Northern classic and many other great soul records. Little Richard "The girl cant help it" I swear they used an octapus for the drumming on that song. 50s soul and then some. I'll get me coat BH

Dont get your point...Edwin starr "War" charted in the UK in October 1970 The thread is titled "what song first gotcha? Quite a few of the replies indicate getting into Northern Soul gradually via discovering soul at youth clubs/radio etc. I dont think many people went into a northern club without ever hearing or knowing what soul was. In 1970 when I got into black american music the term Northern soul wasnt even coined. I for one have enjoyed reading peoples remenicences from there youth, sorry the records that first "gotcha" didn't meet with your approval. There is a poitive in everything if you look hard enough BH

In 1970 I went to a sea training school on Anglesey called the Indefatigable and there were quite a few black lads from Liverpool who were into motown/reggae. The school had a crappy record player and we were allowed to play records for a couple of hours on a night, the only problem being the rivallry between the rock/pop lads and us lot. We ended up having seperate nights but still went so we could smoke out of the widows and not be seen by the officers. The tunes that got me hooked were:- Ball of confusion...Temptations, War..Edwinn Starr, Move on up..C. Mayfied, Tams..Hey Girl, Flaming Ember..Westbound No9. Motown Chartbusters 3 Tighten up/Club Reggae We all used to listen to Radio Luxemburg on tiny trannies with earpieces in bed at night. Never went to sea and ended up getting a job back in Leeds, Stopped being a football holigan and spent saturday afternoons digging round for records Happy Days BH
  23. I've just been playing the Brothers of Soul cd "I guess that dont make me a loser" on Collectables and track one "Try it Babe" grabbed my attention and I thought next time I see that in a box I'll get that, had a look on GEMM nothing doing, had a look in TBs price guide, not mentioned. The sleeve notes state "the groups second Shock release and final record featured Ben Knight on Try it Babe. It was a splendid release, but apparently the jocks did not agree because it failed to get much airplay" I cant be bothered to dig out Label listings etc so any ideas on value/availability etc. Best BH
