Where Do We Stand On Northern Soul Pop?
Good shout...picking up on the idea of the thread! The idea that "pop" was introduced to the scene during a particular year or so or by specific DJ's/Venues is nonsense...it's always been there! In fact...aren't they all "pop" records or aspiring "pop" records? You're getting the idea...what appealed back then may not have the same effect today! So, where is that line???

Where Do We Stand On Northern Soul Pop?
So, Tony...where is your line? Just as a baseline; I am fairly openminded and not judgemental! There's some attrocious "soul" (rare; therefore pretentious & expensive) records that get hyped and some pretty decent "pop" records that get dissed or just pop records that were accepted (Detroit Soul)...looking back, a lot of the "big tunes" from the day were actually not soul records; although very soulful (Dean Parrish) whereas P.P. Arnold for example sounds quite "poppish"...over to you lot!

Where Do We Stand On Northern Soul Pop?
Where is the line between acceptable and unacceptable Northern Soul "pop" records? Where do you draw that line? As a guide: Paul Anka - Can't Help Loving You Versus When We Get There Rufus Lumley - I'm Standing Versus Stronger Than Me Blue Eyed Soul? The Beat or the Vocals? Just interested :-)....for a bit of fun!

Night Closers?
I Go To Pieces definitely was added to 3 before 8... Enders; mmmmmmmmmm....how about these? Ray Pollard - The Drifter Marva Josie - Don't Tony Michaels - I Love The Life I Live (St.Ives circa 1977) Judy Freeman & Blackrock - Hold On Marketts - Bella Delana (For the non-lyrical types) Talking of the 3 before 8...IMHO; although atmospheric as one of the three, I missed hearing Tobi Legend played during the night

Cleggy/clifton/mecca 70S Stompers
Decided that's not very clear either:-) My intention was to demonstrate that the many listed from that era can fit today and was providing some that are accepted today and are not too dissimilar...there, hope that's clearer :-) Not sure if these have been mentioned from the era:- Soulful Strings - Burning Spear Life - Tell Me Why Funky Sisters - Do It To It George Benson - On Broadway Dynatones - Fife Piper Mistura - Flasher Johnny Williams - You're Something Kinda Mellow Rufus Wood - Before 2001 Soulvation Army Band - Dancing On A Daydream Flaming Embers - Have Some Everybody

Cleggy/clifton/mecca 70S Stompers
Thanks! Sorry; should have made clear that as per my last post the intention was to capture the spirit of today & relative to the 70's:-) Personally, I don't know when it was first played! Yes, good thread. Firstly, sjclement; it did get plays as a new release in the 70's; agree...great under-rated choon. This is right up my street...so many great sounds...stompers a loose term really, particularly considering today & relative to the 70's...but still, let's give it a go in that spirit: Solid Solution - Think About It Girl Timeless Legend - I Was Born To Love You Patterson Twins - Gonna Find A True Love Odyssey - Battened Ships Will Collins & Willpower - Anything I Can Do The Innersection - Let Me Love Yuh Split Decision - Watchin' Out Southside Movement - Do It To Me The Bitter & The Sweet - I Won't Have Any Babies For You Reflections - Three Steps From True Love

Best Northern Soul Production Teams.....?
Ha-ha...had a Wylie/Hestor "beer" night a few weeks back when my 26 yr old son came home for the weekend...resulting in CD's for all his mates :-) and an immediate love of Rosemary. Good to see the youngsters appreciating the excellence of this pair! Talk about starting with the best!

New Discoveries 6Ts/7Ts Northern & Rare Soul
Hey Russ...there's so many waiting to be discovered just waiting for us to get older! These days they're called ballads...give it another 10 years and they'll feel like stompers :-) BTW; you still win best nighter recovery for Winsford circa 2002 In the meantime...a frequent visitor to my music room and fairly new to my old ears; Sherrell Bros - The Price - Currison

Dirty Secrets: Which "oldie" Will You Never Ever Get Sick Of?
They're all oldies...just depends if you have heard them or not! New "60's" is a contradiction :-) The floor is the "teller"...depends on the crowd, the night. What works one night, flops the next. Still...for me; Tamala Lewis would do it...however; DJ'd at a mates wedding the other week and 2 stalwarts of the scene since 73; request was Dobie Gray - Out On The Floor

Wanted - Casino 3Rd Ann. Badge
Dave...it was a big thing, yes. As a 12 year old in 74 it seemed like they were the rage. I used to ask my brother (2 years older) to get me a badge wherever he went, until I was "allowed" to go myself one year later...so had a nice collection until my wife decided to chuck them out! Just look at old B&S issues and there were big adverts selling them.
