  1. Great lp, yellow outline w a big picture of the Isley's, play mine a lot, crazy this is still the only way to hear some of these tracks, surely someone must have comped them by now?

Ady is indeed doing this, when we put Darrow on stage here earlier this year listening to every track of his from over the years when thinking about the setlist made it pretty mindblowing no-one has done this before, don't need to mention how knockout he was live I'm sure, it really doesn't get any better, our hats truly off to him
  3. Have all 3 of these Poncello winners but the Jades took by far the longest to pick up, thanks again to Jocko for that
  4. Easy enough question to answer - when it's done right there's nothing like it. We're the only venue I know of that puts on live 60's greats EVERY MONTH, we're not just talking about just a few songs each, every one does a full show, almost always throwing in sides they've not sung in decades. Last weekend we had Don Gardner (even doing Dog eat dog, his Tifton outing, first time since the sixties), Betty Harris, Renaldo Domino, Vernon Garrett (his first ever NYC show if you can believe it) and Harvey Scales (even got him to do Independency, his rarest side again no-one had heard live since the 6T's, plus Trackdown which we re-taught him last time he played for us), to a packed sold-out crowd, plus the likes of Lee Fields and Tami Lynn coming up and doing even more songs, all with knockout backing bands, Betty Harris was completely blown away to find out we had a string section for her, the first time in her career she'd had that on stage she told us. Here's just a snippet of Renaldo to give you a taste: And if any of you good people are wondering what to do on New Year's Eve thenget yourself to NYC, we've got Marva Whitney and the incomporable Billy Prince of the Precisions doing full sets, how's that for a soulful start to 2011, here's a clip of Billy from last time we were proud to put him on stage ps Malc, Valentine's Day 1990 got to see Lou Rawls play the Harlem Apollo with Marlena Shaw as support, don't need to tell you he was unforgettably great. Unlike walking home all the way from 125th St at 1am afterwards as no taxis dared go there then in the late hours, with a girlfriend who'd decided to wear a fur coat to Harlem, that was not such a good memory

Truly coincidental and I think really touching, almost simultaneously with his passing, at midnight here on Saturday Betty Harris was on stage headlining the Brooklyn Soul Festival and in front of a packed audience told everyone how what really started her career was her version of Solomon's beautiful "Cry to me" and then captivated the whole place with a truly beautiful, string-laden version, nobody in the house yet knew it was also a eulogy, RIP indeed dear man.

Lots of great sounds there but not too much rare in terms of getting them all if you feel like it, Gonn and the Bees aren't cheap but by rare garage standards not crazy tough. Now collecting the contents of Back from the Grave on the other hand... Agree on the Seeds but have occasionally played out a female Brazilian version (Wanderlea) of it but def not at soul nights.
  7. K, found the other garage version, it's not any of the ones listed here, Downbeats on Trail, see a pretty beat copy just went through ebay, Tennessee 45, belting little version!
  8. My copy is signed by Willie himself wish could have heard him play some of the tracks on it live but at least got to see him perform a few times.
  9. Val does get some new stock on the shelves but really not in quantity at all, esp since he let John go and only has Chuck working full-time. Still do check a couple of specific labels each time on the off chance but otherwise build up a list every month of every soul/funk 45 that goes through ebay >$100 that I know I haven't looked for before and anything I see on any playlist of a dj I get the impression plays decent stuff that again haven't looked for before, obviously that means by now have looked for a ridiculously high % of "known" titles / labels so tend to be more looking for slightly more niche stuff, eg 2 weeks ago came back with 45's like the Cravens featuring Rex Garvin on Saber, couple of copies of a girl popcorn version of Blues in the night, Nancy Ames "I wanna hear it from you" on RCA (he has an entire wall of RCA, you have to look for specific artists/titles or you could spend all your time just there, no others of this one), 2 acetate pre's of Ocie Smith "Lighthouse", etc, interesting stuff for sure but not what most people here would really be hoping for, even on the local Philly labels it's very thin, prob last decent hit was a dozen unplayed Jack Jacobs on Libra (including a white demo, only ever seen the blue issue before, anyone?), definitely not like a decade ago when you could think, hmm Dorothy Ramsay, and simply walk to the Melodynamic section (now empty of course, sorry) and lift one out!
  10. I've been to Val's around a hundred (yes, 100) times in the last decade+, once a month or so it's an easy round-trip from here in NYC, a stone mint Hyperions on Chattahoochee (from the clearly marked Chatahoochee section, not exactly hard to find) for all of $20 was probably the biggest surprise to find was somehow still sitting there, but although it's very rare to find anything even close to that there in the last few years is def still one of my favourite ways to get out of town for a day.
  11. Ronnie White - Out of breath (Brent) - could there be a more appropriate title for this thread!!!!
  12. <<7968 James Lynn Marsh - Big Bo & The Arrows- Do What You Want To / Do You Miss Me>> Great but not as good as his ASTOUNDING 45 on Rainbow 401 R.L. Griffin - Big Bo & The Arrows- The Ting-A-Ling / I’ll Follow You terrible a-side (it was his nickname too) but the b-side "I'll follow you" is lights out fantastic, especially when the organ cranks in at the end
  13. Thank you for the kind words all, really hope enough people can each throw a few pennies Katherine's way so she can keep filming, it would be amazing to have a true visual record of these shows, just 2 weeks until the weekender, would be great to see some of you make it over (including from Japan of course good fella!!) Best, Michael and Richard
  14. You think that's good (which it is, massive kudos to Bob) but how about us having them on stage here in NYC for a whole show including both this and Life of Tears, just a totally epic night
  15. I have all of those (the Charlie label cracks me up, looks like a 70's aftershave ad or something) AND a far rarer raw garage version that will have to dig out as forget the group name
  16. Dean Parrish did an amazing version of INBOFM for us on stage here at Dig Deeper last month, nearly 8 minutes long, latin style breaks added, just beyond superb
  17. Thought there's been a few (relative) bargains on John's auctions in last few weeks, not least Walter B "I can't stop loving you" on Apollo, if I didn't have that already would have bid a serious stack load more than it went for, that's a stupidly rare record and a total stormer (maybe too fast for most people here, heart attacks on the dancefloor are not that soulful)

Willie Tee - I'm only a man (Capitol) literally worn not 1 but 2 copies out over the years, and got to have him sign the cover too
  19. He just played NY for free, was ok but not really great, didn't look that happy to be on stage strangely. Unlike on the same day Spyder Turner and Melvin Davis who were just full-on excellent, Velvelettes were a bit up and down, ? Mark and Mysterians were batshit crazy (in a good way), great line-up by our friends at Ponderosa as ever.
