  4. Yes, but I like to test initially to see where it goes. Like my inItial $5000 bid on The Combinations
  5. Some very valid points there mate. I used to go to the US record hunting 3-4 times a year from the mid 80's through to the late 90's but eventually ebay and price guides ruined it. There have always been those who can afford to buy whatever they want (not always with their own money ), but those of us who dug deep, trawled through 100's of 1000's of records for hours on end could always get good pieces for our collections. But nowadays if and when we do, the dealer or store owner just logs onto the web and "that'll be $1000 please sir" soon follows. I'm sure that there are those among the collecting fraternity who can and do buy everything they want, do love the music just as much, but it's not just the mega rarities that make a collection is it? The £5/£10/£20 sounds are what make the backbone of a collection IMO
  6. You would have thought so. But to me it's kind of like cheating. I'll carry on as usual. Say I've just been outbid on a record at a little over $50 so I now have to put in $100, $150 and so on. I can't see that by using a sniper I'll ultimately end up paying any less or if so only pennies. However, there would be more chance of me NOT winning the auction by using a sniper. As you have to second guess what people might be willing to pay so there would be a temptation (for me anyway) to put less in the sniper. So, if I put $100 or $150 in and it went for say $170 I would be gutted. I seem to remember this same topic when I, at least to some anyway, paid well over the top for Ray Pollard on Shrine.
  7. I've given up on getting records cheap these days. I'm just glad to get them. I never pay more than I'm prepared to but often more than I'd like to. Just life innit?
  8. Not true. I don't use a sniper yet I regularly bid often, bid early and bid high. I win some, I lose some. I've used this technique since I first went on eBay about 15 years ago. Phil

  20. Which Cleo Jackson tune is it? I have a good one by him, well artist reads "Cleo Jackson, Huck and The Soul Patrol" titled "I'm The Reason" on Mar Kee. I used to play it at The Griffin in about 1998 Phil
  21. A guy in Michigan (Southfield) called Harry Levin had 100's of copies. I had 3 off him in 1990 or so (he's long dead now). He was an old school guy, a real character. Used to run a "rack jobbing" business in the 60's & 70's and just bought up any stock he could find of anything. He had a fair few copies of The Hyperions at that time too. He used to put out weird lists with rare records really cheap (by compariosn) and really common records at very expensive prices (again by comparison). Basically he would list whatever he happened to come across in his warehouse, and price it up as high as he could and work from there.
  22. Soul Intention is proud to announce the imminent release of the second great 70's double-sider from Kent Washburn's Enkay Records Catalog, "One Way Ticket" bw/ "Don't Burn No Bridges" by The Hypnotics. The producer, Kent Washburn, has this to say.... "Both sides are kickin' Northern Soul sides from the mid 70's, which feature the very unique voice of James Thompson singing lead", states Washburn. "I originally produced this group for the Warner Bros label, (Reprise). Their two WB releases, (Beware of the Stranger bw/ Girl You Know That I Love You, and Dance to the Music bw/ Memories) were nationalR&B charted singles, and were what actually established my career as a record producer. I am really pleased to be able to have the rest of their catalog finally released to the public." "When I hooked up with them (The Hypnotics), James Thompson was already a very successful songwriter, working with the legendary Gene Chandler out of Chicago. He had numerous cuts on Gene, plus Mel & Tim, The Impressions, Barbara Acklin, Betty(The Cleanup Woman) Wright and Krystal Generation. But he wanted to get back in the public eye as an Artist. His first group, The Voicemasters had recorded for the Bamboo Label, but the success that they had was somewhat limited and he was looking for a bigger platform to expose his songwriting abilities and unique vocal ideas. We gathered together the "St Louis A-team session musicians- Westmoreland Co", and went to work. We did use the legendary "Tom-Tom Washington" from Chicago as horn & string arranger on some of the first stuff we cut, but the majority of what we cut was arranged and produced by James and myself. I love working with James. He is a true musical talent, and if things develop properly, don't be surprised if you get to hear some current sides that James and I will do. (Keep your fingers crossed...smile!) So, again, I happily say, "Hello from St Louis, et, al.... You now get to hear more great music from St Louis, MO !!! " The record is in production at the pressing plant and will be available from Monday February 20th. It will be available from the the Soul Intention website and, of course, from all good purveyors of soulful vinyl.
  23. I remember you & tats (with Rob Wigley I think), just leaving Street Corner Music in Ferndale, MI not longer after I walked in, about 1989/90 I remember being quite down as I thought I wasn't going to get anything as you lot had obviously cleaned it out. So I started looking through the 25 cent bin full of records with no sleeves, and I found Danny Moore on Allrite in there amongst others. Sold it to Pete Lowrie for a grand
