Come on you 'old' Mansfield area Soulies, let's do Studge proud!!!
  2. Banner posted a post in a topic in All About the SOUL
6 years later & I was accosted at the soul event in the Civic Centre, Mansfield last night by Tina Wilton... She had a dig at me for not mentioning her in my previous posts, even though I mentioned her hubby Dave (Loxy) and a lot of the others who frequented the scene all those years ago. Right then, let me correct things, here we go, Dave (Loxy) went on to marry the adorable, stunningly beautiful, (who's beauty was not only in her outwardly appearance, but also her wonderful personality), Tina and the rest, as they say, is history. There you are Tina, I've mentioned you now.... Pint of John Smiths at the next event will do nicely....LOL!!! Seriously, a great couple & both lucky to have each other for all these years!!!

Yet again, another excellent evening in this superb venue. Over 200 there, despite some of the regulars being away on their jollies.

    Excellent, just excellent

Excellent event amongst some really nice people. Superb spot from Rob Wigley, plus the resident DJ's, Jazz, Steve, Tony & Sandra. Thoroughly enjoyed the night!!!

Absolutely banging night. Seems everything is almost back to 'normal' ,after Covid, with the numbers who turned up. Well done Phil & Paul!!! Thoroughly enjoyed the night!!!!!!!!!

No doubt it'll be yet another cracking event. Bank Holiday the day after, so no need to worry about getting up in the morning.
  5. Jazz, Studge text me on Sunday if that helps. Yes we can talk plenty of b*llocks when/if we finally get through it.... I've got a degree in talking b*llocks! For anyone thinking this virus is just another flu.... Believe me, it makes flu feel like a walk in the park! It's vile!!!!!!!!!! EVERYONE STAY SAFE!!!!!!!!!!
  6. Hi Jazz, how you doing pal? I'm afraid I'm sat here keeping that bloody virus company, or is it that virus keeping me company? Wife & I tested positive last weekend and if we can get it ANYONE can. We've been so careful mate, almost obsessional about it, because of our ages and my underlying health issues, we've taken no risks... Masks all the time, hand gelling, washing hands constantly and making sure we followed social distancing, yet it still got us... I see the infection rate is currently flying high around your neck of the woods, so take extra care mate!!! I'll stick my fave into the equation.... As others have said, I could pick any one of many, but it has to be the Younghearts - A Little Togetherness Always been a constant favourite of mine.
  7. Spot on mate!!! Why do some want to make the scene "Elitist"? If that happens it will most certainly die when we've all passed on!!! I too have been to the Shirebrook event and even DJ'd there. An excellently knowledgable crowd & run by very good people! Certainly not to be knocked. Soul music is soul music, wherever and whenever it's played. The "I'm more a 'proper' Northern Soulie than you" attitude doesn't help anyone, especially the young ones joining the scene..... I'll wait for the flak from those 'Proper', 'Elitist' Soulies.....😆

Yet again, another fantastic event. Packed out as usual. As I've said before, this just can't be bettered. Next one March 29th folks.

Missed the last one because of Man-Flu. Can't wait for this one. Has to be up there with the best events in the whole country. Great venue, superb beers, a fantastic atmosphere, great music and a wonderful crowd. Simply can't be bettered!!!

Really looking forward to this. Honoured to be asked to do a guest spot. A great place & crowd!

Gutted, I won't get there today.... Sodding Man Flu!!!

Should be an excellent event. Nothing else on for miles!
  13. Just wish I hadn't bothered giving an opinion.
  14. Anyone want to give me £750 for a lovely copy of Tobi Legend - Time Will Pass You By, on Mala Demo, that jumps near the end? I thought not.....😢
  15. Just giving examples of how playing very expensive originals CAN & DOES occasionally backfire. By the way, those that were nicked, were taken at a couple of very reputable establishments. One being Mr M's. You see, when something has great value, there's always someone else that wants to own it... Either legitimately or OTHERWISE!!! In no way have I expressed an opinion that 'Boots' should be used, just saying that if I had, I'd still have a near mint copy of Tobi Legend.
  16. Very noble to suggest that only original copies should be used to DJ. Something I also used to think was the only way to go. That can also bring its own problems though. Over the years, when I was DJ'ing, back in the mid to late 70's, I had a couple of my records nicked. Distraught, didn't come close to how it made me feel. Then a couple of years ago I was doing a local event. Please note I did it FOR FREE, as a favour to an old friend. My original, near mint, copy of Tobi Legend was playing away on the turntable....... Some prat, who'd had too much of the amber nectar stumbled and hit the decks. That near mint copy is now almost worthless!!! It jumps near the end, thanks to that prat! So, doing my friend a favour, has cost me dearly. If I'd had the foresight to take a copy of it on the Eric label, I'd still be the proud owner of a near mint copy of Tobi Legend....
  17. Sorry if I'm rambling on...It's an age thing, but didn't Eddie Law come from Retford or that way on? Retford seems to ring a bell.
  18. Anyone able to confirm who's still with us from that Palais list of DJ's.... Obviously, I am and I know Kev Roberts & Rob Smith are. What about the rest? Apart from Kev & Rob, I doubt the others would remember me now, (though I still remember all the names). Too many years off the scene, though I'm back in a small way now. See ya in the Cow Shed Jazz on B/H Monday and maybe The Priors Well on Sept 1st? Great event there the other week mate. Rammed solid! Great sounds, STRONG beer and a superb crowd!
  19. Sorry about posting that twice. I think it was either 1974 or 75, probably 75, though I'm not sure. I hope it brings back a few memories for some of you. Just checked & Easter Sunday 30th March was definitely 1975
  20. Fond, very fond memories of Mr M's around 1974-75. Almost everything I played was 100mph, or at least something that kept the floor full. That was what Mr M's was all about for me. There were certain records you knew would get the floor packed and bouncing. Some were a little unorthodox and certainly not 'pure', classic, Northern soul, but they went down well, very well, at the time. Some of the best that I found kept the dancers hammering away were; Little Queenie - Bill Blacks Combo Sea Cruise - Ace Cannon Too Late - Williams & Watson I Got The Fever - Creation/Prophets Seven Days Too Long - Chuck Wood I'm Standing - Rufus Lumley Breakout- Mitch Ryder You Get Your Kicks - Mitch Ryder Quick Change Artist - Soul Twins One Wonderful Moment - Shakers Girl, Don't Make Me Wait - Bunny Sigler Better Use Your Head - Little Anthony Out On The Floor - Dobie Gray Shing-A-Ling - Cooperettes Sliced Tomatoes - Just Brothers What Would I Do - Tymes Exes Trek - Luther Ingram Crying' Over You - Duke Browner I've Got Something Good - Sam & Kitty Nothing Can Compare To You - Velvet Satins I even used Mike Post - Afternoon On The Rhino when it stopped being played in the main room and one of my all time favourites A Little Togetherness - The Younghearts. I wish I could go back in time and experience it again, just once would do!!!
