  1. Yep, my copy on Jayboy slows down near the beginning. Also had two copies of Ila Vann - You made me this way on PiP and that had very bad hiss and distortion on both copies (Styrene) even the Goldmine cd version sounds s***e

Had a drink and my photo taken with Martha Reeves in the restaurant at the Philharmonic, Liverpool before she did her act. John Peel bought me a pint and we talked football and music when I was at a mutual friends 60th, but the best thing that has ever, ever happened to me bar none, was to spend a day in a friend's recording studio with Lamont Dozier producing Terri Walker in 2004 on one fantastic track that has yet to be released and then going out for an Italian meal with both of them and asking them all the things you ever wanted to ask and him signing all my albums and getting loads of photos to prove it. The worst thing was having to explain to non soulies who Lamont Dozier was!
  3. Saw him as well with the Funk Bros but always had a place in my collection for Outer Space, although it was more funk than Northern it always amazed me how he managed to play such a complex tune with such ease - couldn't even keep up on the air keyboard. RIP Billy
  4. Never knew that - I had Darrell Banks, Jackie Wilson, Doni Burdick and Tyrone Davis - didn't know Betty Wright had done a version either. Kev
  5. Sean, I don't have any of the soul sounds releases and don't think I have ever seen one - any chance you could stick one up for me Thanks Kev
  6. Living with a non soulie is easy - it gives me my own space and my own interest away from family life. I do listen to my other half's music which tends to be modern R&B so we don't have Robbie Williams or any chart stuff and we both like Jazz. I occasionaly do cd's for her car which I call Northern Soul Lite - consisting of stuff she's heard me play that she likes - more what I would call listenable than danceable - stuff like Sandra Wright - I come running back and Patti Drew - Tired of falling in and out of love - you could say that she is a closet soulie. She's never been to a venue and has no desire to go. My girls, one aged 6 and one 9, love stuff like Spiral Starecase, Dana Valery, Nancy Ames and Lynne Randell - Pop stuff I suppose you could call it.

Also check out "It's better to have loved and lost" on the b side of "Sitting on a time bomb" a beautiful string laden catchy mid tempo number that I don't think is on cd
  10. Thanks John, I have never seen an original but always suspected it was a counterfeit. I also had a very good counterfeit Luther Ingram on green Hib, but as with this, it had no matrix stamp. I will stick a sound file up of the b-side tonight for those interested if I get a chance

  17. I agree to a point and I think everyone clings on to a bit of their past like a security blanket, but I also think that people still like to hear new stuff but only in the genre of their choice. Anyone on this scene who claims to have heard everything is kidding themselves. There is nothing better than hearing something that is either 60's or 70's or even later for that matter, that you haven't heard before, hence I spend most of my money on albums searching for those tracks that never made it as singles,or sharing cd's with others, so I can quench my thirst for new stuff. Where would we be without all those acetates or unissued Motown stuff: still dancing to the same stuff from 30 yrs ago I suspect. There is no better feeling than having a record/track that you have treasured for some time played at a venue and becoming big, for the first time - feelings like, " I knew this would be big one day" The scene needs new stuff to stay alive otherwise we all might as well stay at home. Kev

Depends on whether you want well known northern stuff, or just good quality tracks without all the usual suspects. Diamonds and Pearls on Goldmine is excellent GSCD 76 bit of both The essential Northern soul story GSCD1 ( which I think is deleted now) but absolutely fantastic and worth hunting down all good quality proper Northern soul no pop stuff on it Floorpackin GSCD 114 Living the nightlife on Kent CDKEND 104 mainly stuff on Wand/sceptre This is northern soul volumes 1 and 2 on motown/spectrum You won't go wrong with any of those Kev

  23. Yes they were from Liverpool and were originally called either the Chants or the Vocal Perfection but I don't think they were the same group that were on RCA. I used to see them regularly at the Mardi Gras in Mount Pleasant when Billy Butler was the DJ and They were two bothers in the group Called Chris & Eddie Amoo, the other two were dumped when they became the Real Thing as they weren't good looking enough. Best record was "Children of the Ghetto" which they wrote and was covered very well by Courtney Pine. Was a great venue the old Mardi Gras, also saw Manchester's Great Expectations there and I think they had a minor hit in the states with something which escapes me at the moment. Also saw Wilson Pickett, Arthur Conley. Kev

On the subject of unreleased tracks what about Deon Jackson - Someday the sun will shine - Personally I think it is an unreleased Bobby Vee track (night has a thousand eyes fame), every time I hear it I can picture Bobby Vee. Having said that I actually quite like him.
  25. Anyone ever go to the 66 club in West Kirby on the Wirral, from late 60's to early 70's Played some cracking stuff - I was a regular from 69 to 71
