Metal middles, yeah, know what you mean. Doesn't happen on all American imports but when it happens, it always seems to happen on those made from styrene rather than vinyl, don't you think?

Hi Joan, My understanding is that American 45s had large holes for the Jukeboxes and rather than make seperate 45s with small holes for those 'other' types of record players, they just made adapters so that their 45s could be played on both. The UK releases came with small holes but also with a bigger 'push-out' centre so they could be used on UK Jukeboxes. Having said that, I could never understand why it was that many UK releases got pressed without that larger push-out centre. How would they be converted for use on UK Jukeboxes I sked myself? Unless of course, there were two types of UK Jukeboxes, one with small spindles and one with large spindles?
  3. Best of the bunch, for me, by a mile. Cheers for putting me onto this one Pete!!!

Aha, PhilD, whatever happened to the General Johnson test pressing? Did you manage to work your way through them all yet? Still waiting to hear back from you. I know, we all forget things from time to time, and I am no exception, believe me. Anyhow, how's about it, any luck? Please say yes!!!

  6. Good stuff Pete, enjoyed them all, especially the first one. Is that a UK label Collins Downbeat?

  12. Okay. Good reaction. Couple of points however; 1. I said right from the start that this was in no way a swipe at John Manship, in fact I've already said that he and his staff do a wonderful job of making all this information available to us all. For which I am very grateful. He doesn't have to do it but he does, for the love of the music. So once again, I congratulate John Manship and his staff. And lets face it, we couldn't have this discussion if they weren't there, could we? 2. In a way, I'm quite pleased that a lot of these rare records are crap. Up until now I thought I was missing out on something but I'm not. And it also means that I can sift through the few that I DID like and despite their rarity, stand a chance of getting a few, providing of course I can come up with the dosh, or cunjure up some remarkable good luck. Imagine how I'd feel if ALL the records on the Rarest of the Rare were brilliant, that would be disheartening as a collector, I wouldn't stand a dogs chance of collecting them all would I? As it stands, I feel the few that I really liked could be within grasp before I snuff it. Mind you, I'd have to sell a few out of my collection to fund the quest, my wages will never go THAT far. 3. Once I've been through the whole of the Rarest of the Rare list, just to satisfy my curiosity, as Mark Bicknell pointed out, I will be going through everything else on his site that offers a soundbyte because therein lie the true quality Soul and R&B records, many of which are latent monsters and as yet undiscovered gems of the future. Thanks for reading my views everybody and for your feedback, the posting was well worth the effort.
  13. Not much more to say than that really. And don't just come back at me with the comment, "They're rare". Elaborate. No offence to John, I respect the guy enormously, this is not a swipe at him or his site and all the hard work put in by himself and his hard working staff, just the ever growing list of so-called rare records that are listed. But let's be honest now, a lot of them are really crap aren't they and must only be there simply 'cos they're rare, but not necessarily good? I mean, perhaps they're rare because they were crap when they first came out and all but a few somehow escaped getting binned, trashed, melted down, burnt at the stake, etc, which makes those that are left, RARE. Has anybody gone through the whole lot and actually listened to them all? I've been doing so for a few nights now and am so far very disappointed. NOT at all the hard work John has put into populating the list and making it available for us all to see and listen to, but by what is considered good enough to be included in the list. There, I'd better stop now before I go too far and inadvertantly offend somebody with my own personal opinions and observations. Just thought I'd share that thought with you all to see what kind of feedback / reaction I get. Forums are about stimulating thought and opinions. Lets have some.

Looks good, yeah. You sure they won't ship abroad? Think it says, Free shipping is only available within the 48 contiguous United States. Which suggests, if you're prepared to pay for shipping then . . . . ???

When and where did you get it for a tenner. Not that I'm expecting to do the same, just out of sheer curiosity . . . . and to rub salt into my already gaping wound!!!

Was this ever released, either 45 or Lp track? If so, what on? Where can I get a copy? What's it worth?
