Almost Forgotten 3 - Early 80's Allnighter Sounds PART 3
Here's Part 3 - Another deep dip into the back of the Playbox. More 'almost forgotten' and rarely heard records that were very decent floorfillers at Rotherham Clifton Hall, The Rotherham Windmill and Cleethorpes Winter Gardens in the early 80's. Along with a few real biggies, here are some of the lesser known sounds of the day. Some are probably due a revival. How many do you remember? Anyhow, give it a good listen and, if you were there, get yourself transported back to the early 80's. And if you weren't around at the time you should still find it an interesting retrospective. Cheers, Sean

Certainly was covered up as Anderson Brothers, Adam. I have it in my memory as a Poke tune, but we were all on it once it was uncovered. Sean

Yep - Morecambe would have come a year or so later, but the records were so good they endured right through to Bradford, Stafford, Morecambe, Warrington etc. Good times mate. Sean- Almost Forgotten - Early 80's Allnighter Sounds

Thank you. In case you missed it, the second part is here:- Dontells - Superb Unreleased Soul Sides from 1965 - Now on 45!
Hi Rick, good to hear from you mate. Hope, all is well. I agree Rick, lovely old tracks arent they. These are now out and about and available from many good purveyors of all things Soulful. Limited edition item so, anyone not yet placed an order, go get them while you can! Cheers, Sean- Almost Forgotten - Early 80's Allnighter Sounds PART 2
Here's Part 2 of the 'Almost Forgotten' mix featuring some of the Really Big sounds of the day. Interesting that many of these were very new or recent releases at the time, mixed with a fair old bunch of 60's and 70's rarities. Some are probably due a revival, others never really went away! Anyhow, give it a good listen and, if you were there, get yourself transported back to 1981. And if you weren't around at the time you should still find it an interesting retrospective. Cheers, Sean- Almost Forgotten - Early 80's Allnighter Sounds
Thanks all. I'll be posting Part 2 shortly with many of the Really BIG sounds of the day. Cheers, Sean- Eddie Billups Shorty Billups
He told me that he so believed in the song that he kept pushing it, on different labels, for many years! Although I was playing it soon after it's 77 release, in the 70's we were unaware of the Hellpp release until 10+ years after. It was a true Holy Grail for ages, but the internet has spawned a few copies in recent times (though still a pretty rare record). Sean- Eddie Billups Shorty Billups
Was a huge play for me back in the late 70's, early 80's and still one of my all time favourite records. I finally got to meet the man and see him perform, many years later. You may find this tread from 2006 is of interest. Cheers, Sean- Almost Forgotten - Early 80's Allnighter Sounds
First of a series of mainly underexposed AllNighter sounds from the early 80's. If you like what you hear please follow. There are afew more to come! Cheers, Sean- Dontells - Superb Unreleased Soul Sides from 1965 - Now on 45!
Strongly tipping this great new release. Old music, recorded in 1965 and now available on a stunning double sided 45. Some of you will know how I've championed the Dontells 'Gonna Tell The World' for many years, well this is right in the same bag. Classic Chicago Soul Heaven. Great to see my friend Nathaniel Pendleton's work from over 50 years ago finally getting a release. Heres what they say at Groove Attack - The Dontells entered the studio and cut two tracks that put that sound on full display. The session was led by producer Calvin Carter, world famous Arranger Johnny Pate-along with the cities top musicians. These tracks were never released and have only been heard by a few people until now. The A side “Move On Down the Line” grabs you from the first second the needle drops. A mid tempo love song with a trademark arrangement from Pate and a vocal melody and approach in the style of Chicago’s king of soul, Curtis Mayfield. “There Goes A Fool” is the B side and is a reminder why The Dontells were one of the best groups out of the Windy City. Another brilliant production with a top notch arrangement . Horns, strings, a swinging backbeat and that signature Chicago vocal sound lead by the sweet harmonies of Nate, Leroy, Manuel & Ralph. This is no doubt a 60’s soul classic in 2017! Will put both sides on here from YouTube. If you love the classic 'Chicago' sound I'm sure you'll appreciate both sides. Saw it earlier. Been round the block a few times that one! Sean- Show us your great photos (2017)
- Tommy Tate; Sad news
I can name on just two hands what I consider to be the top 'truly unique' Male Soul Voices and Tommy Tate is certainly one of them. God bless you sir for sharing your truly great gift with us all over so many years. You will be remembered by all of us, for always. Tommy Tate - Forever On The Real Side. I also bought it as a new release and played it out once or twice, with little success, but on flipping it over instantly fell in love with the stunning 'How Could You Run Away'. A truly great record that has stood the test of time. To be honest John, I can't remember Dave raving over this one, but it wouldn't surprise me if he had. Certainly right up his street. Cheers and all the best. Sean - Almost Forgotten - Early 80's Allnighter Sounds
