Rarest Soul 12"
Went to the Orwell. Very enjoyable but where were the modern soul fans? You missed a good night. Far from empty but a few more woulda been nice. I heard that Nick Allen. I know Dave T has a bit of a soft spot for the Beach Music back to his days at Stafford with Cannonball etc but as soon as Nick Allen came on I was back amongst the "shaggers" in Winston-Salem. Just another tailor-made Beach record, which stood out to me only cos it was so obviously Beach orientated. ROD

Whats This All About
Paul, I cannot disagree with your list of those who lose out or your assertion of the value of the soul bootleg economy. Well actually I can. Pressing plants!! I was approaching the subject, maybe wrongly, that Shute was concerned that it was pressed and so a rare-ish 45 is "ruined". John kinda covers that angle in the last post which is nonsense IMO. I have it, Im a collector but a boot/re-issue has no effect on me. OK, collectively it's a lot of money going into the wrong pockets but as an individual case were any monies to be shared out amongst the right people as listed by you I think the amount would be a long long way from an honest living. Peanuts in fact!! If I were Pat I'd be asking old Connie why she's sat in her office answering irate queries from Vinyl Vixen instead of looking at her catalogue and maximising the return from it. I guess you'd know the answer to that better than myself. Without wishing to be rude for someone who is ostensibly involved in protecting artistic copyright I find it amazing that you should need to ask who is selling these 45s when it took me around 2 seconds to read the Ebay ad to know, and post it for all to see. And that was not out of some petty desire to see the lad in trouble but to further the thread. They may be legit for all I know. Again Im not involved in putting 45s out but I did hear about some system where you register what you issue and it's up to artists, writers etc to come and get their share. So I don't condone bootlegging, I don't buy bootlegs. On the other hand I don't condemn people who do. If they can't afford the price of a rarity who am I to say they can't have it on a bootleg if they want to. What I don't like is getting up in arms just because [geddit!!] you have the original. ROD

Who cares!!!! Get over it!!! Limited re-issue so why auction it? Anything to do with "Eamesy" on here. Soul mine? Aldershot? 45s are gonna be made available that are in demand. Here's another. ROD

The Charades
In the words of Colonel Jack O'neill "I knew that" Tony, how embarrassing is this that we have to rely on some whippersnapper from across the Pond to put us right. Better stick to something we know in future. Who do you fancy Arsenal or Chelsea? Feel free to expound on Arsenal's back four, Boba. No doubt you've got a better idea on that too than Tony and I, so why not make the humiliation complete. ROD

The Charades
Yes, but are the Poets on Red Bird same group as on Symbol, although obviously you are the last person I'd ask if I were after a reliable answer. ROD
-
The Charades
Tony, not according to my vast knowledge and experience, recently gained by typing in Cuba Gooding in my search engine. Seems he was in the Poets [symbol or Red Bird - same group?] and Main Ingredient were Insiders before settling on that name. So do you think you should be representing this country as an international DJ with such a sketchy and woeful grasp of 60's soul history. ROD

What Was The First 12"
I'd have to agree with Ian as I remember seeing a copy of VSR at the Ritz all-dayer in Manchester and it was the first in that format that I'd seen. ROD

The Charades
"YBBI", gentlemen, is IMO more to do with Civil Rights as the lyric deals with the guy saying he would fight for his country and defend fellow citizens even though he does not get their respect in everyday life. Also a great 45 which may suffer collectibility-wise from being on that Harlem Hit Parade label which I think was primarily a re-issue vehicle for doo-wop mainly on LP. Does anyone know whether there was one group called the Charades or more. They're on Okeh and Mercury [wasn't main office in Chicago] but is that the same group as MGM. Also doo-wop releases I think. AVA label rings a bell. ROD

Rarest Soul 12"
Mark, Im exactly the opposite and don't have much interest in 70's and later but we did sell a lot of 12" stuff in the shop throughout the 90's,albeit mostly hip-hop/R&B cos it was easy and cheap to pick up. Had that J's 12" numerous times. If Jerry Warren is that Detroit 12" in pic cover with red border, kinda slowish, a spoken intro something along the lines in lyric of "stopped by your house and another car in the driveway", then we had about 30 of them from the artist. He had more but he either moved and we couldn't find him again or he was doing other things than music and couldn't be bothered selling us any more. I forget which it was as that kinda thing happens a lot when you're looking for records. So there are copies out there, and unless Jerry's dumped his, a lot of copies holed up somewhere. ROD

Rarest Soul 12"
I honestly can't remember although it was something like E. 8 Mile and maybe the owner was called Taylor. He said he had something to do with Sequins on Detroit Sound and took me and Alex round to meet some other guy who was also involved with the 45, and of course he was outta town and we could never hook up blah blah. So we ended up with hundreds of bloody 70's albums and 7"s including that "Crack Stepping" album. In fact that might not have been known until we got it around '93-'95. Not one decent 45 from 60's. Even introduced us to a longtime Motown rep who we never heard from again. Boston Heights? Boxes of them!! ROD

Rarest Soul 12"
Well Dave if you mean by "turned up" that we found it in the USA [shop in Detroit actually along with some other nice "2-step" 7" indies], thought it was good, and bought at least 25-50 copies for the London market. Sold them at around £5-8 each at the time. Of course the Northern modern scene didn't seem interested as they were more interested in pap like Split Decision Band and Record Player. Those 100mph 80's stompers. We didn't bother buying any more and left loads. Jordi, probably your bro recommended it. ROD

Values Please?
Matt, you've not stated the condition of the 45s which is very important and I hate to be a party-pooper but looks like a load of so-so stuff with hardly any re-sale value. "Selfish one" I guess would be around £8 in Minty condition. That Fortunes 45 is a pop record and big hit in the late 60's. However I know nothing about R&B and some people would say I know nothing, period!! ROD

Soul Britannia Part 3
I quite liked that Lily Allen hit, whatever it were called. Though rather reminiscent of Tippa Irie "Hello Darlin" from years ago which blended reggae and I guess "London patois" for want of a better term. Didn't watch third episode after feeble start [OK, a few good clips] and abysmal second programme. ROD

Dj John Grant
He did dabble in Northern at one time. I sold him a Tony Middleton for £40 when it was getting played as a "newie". I thought he'd gone off to be a lighthouse keeper. Not joking, that's what I heard. ROD

Drifters On Epic Dj And 5 Royales On Abc
"Pour your little heart out" and "Catch that teardrop" I was really hoping to offload these two gems, both in Mintish condition [say EX to M-], for £100 and £175 respectively. I saw the Drifters recently go twice at around £150 and you have to admit that if you ignore every other 45 that has been played on the Northern scene bar these two, then they are the best sounds to ever grace a dj box full of boots, vinyl carvers and cheap originals picked up by mistake. I'd grudgingly take offers but need the most I can get to refill my medication prescription. Thank you all ROD

Anyone Know This?
Somewhat jazzy, weak backing/orchestration and reminds me of theme tune from "Frazier" in vocal delivery. Apart from that,a Monster!! ROD

Chuck Bridges On Scoop
I did have a small quantity but thanks to Viagra and those spam emails about increasing penis size I have no trouble in that department nowadays. To be honest I had a few but can't remember now how many. Nor can I remember a promotional A4 sheet so I assume you've knocked that up with some kinda computer trickery to increase the value of your own copy. Alright,I do have a vague recollection. Was it a written threat along the lines of "Chuck Bridges - cross him at your peril!!" Hope this has been of some help in estimating how many copies are out there. I'd guess 73. ROD

What Do You Most Like About The Scene?
I quite like the bickering and backstabbing but I don't think that makes me a bad person. ROD
