Edward Hamilton - Baby Don't You Weep
Just had a look at Mike Terry credit copy and it has a "Nashville" stamp. Reading last few contributions if there is a Frankford-Wayne stamped copy and Flynny refers to non-credit copy on Popsike with no MT credit and "Chips" sticker, just putting 2+2 together [probably making 5!] is it that it was distributed around Philly and Eastern seaboard by Chips [Weldon McDougal worked there] and copies were pressed at local pressing plant making no credit copy the non-Detroit pressing. This of course relies on all non-credit copies having "F-W" stamp. I don't know cos I don't have that issue. ROD

What Is A Dj Nowadays
From my observation I'd say quite a few. Im guessing that when you were first asked to dj you didn't see what records were in-demand dance floor favouirites from all genres and purposely go out to amass a playlist. You no doubt had your 45s that you considered worth hearing and played them without worrying what others were doing. I do get the impression that some buy records just to be able to play out with no involvement in or attachment to the actual music which makes it easier to "refresh one's playbox" or sell 'em off if the dream fails to materialise. Ann Perry On Theoda Thats The Way He Is
Noticed thread last night but was waiting to have another look at 45. Still got pale blue "Bell Sound" copy, with squiggle ARP? . Got it from a mate in USA who deffo had it in the 70's and probably even earlier than before it was known here. Without wishing to descend into the collecting lunacy that requires a set square and a protractor I did have a quick look at various Thelma 45s. It's actually thinner vinyl than "Peace lovin' man" and "No part time love.." but about same as Billy Kennedy DJ copy [ maybe reg is different vinyl?]. However they're Nashville stamped and this is Bell but it does look very similar to JJ "lonely no more" which is Bell stamped. Before completely losing the will to live the vinyl looks and feels 60's to me when compared to random Detroit vinyl presses. What "thick" vinyl means I've no idea. ROD

The Vibrettes - Humpty Dump
No idea about a later boot but turned up loads of copies in early to mid 90's {300-400 perhaps] on yellow label. All from garage belonging to Delores who had a shop in Cleveland. There were hundreds and hundreds and you were actually walking on them and other 45s up to 2ft deep. Only stopped stocking up when it stopped selling. ROD

Nicky Newarkers
The Delta thing is obviously a Beach re-issue/boot, esp with Greyhound on other side. Coulda been done anytime in past 25 years. ROD

Worst Northern Soul Lyric
Been to Detroit a few times and it's the only US place I know where in some diners you can get fish and chips and written as such on the menu. They also have malt vinegar on the table which is something you have to ask for elsewhere and then a lot don't have it. I believe it's something to do with Canada [Windsor is it?] just over the border. ROD
-
Worst Northern Soul Lyric
The one in the middle is for coffee, weak or strong, Mikey. The record is a Detroit classic. Im not keen on lyrics that tell a story and particularly thinking here about Little Johnny Blair. It doesn't make me wanna dance but more sign up for a monthly donation to "Save the Children". ROD

Help, Please Buy My Records
Before you do anything I'd take a couple of days to think about it. Drinking and posting in the early hours rarely leads to a coherent plan. And obviously take into account today's legal advice. I thought Ken's suggestion, whilst tongue, in cheek was pretty sensible. I'd consider alternative means of employment for a period until your case is heard. It may mean a drop in income/lifestyle but if you are confident that you have been "ripped" and expect recompense at a later stage then why not make the best for a while. Of course I have no idea of your outgoings etc and exactly what you would need to do in the short term to downsize to a more affordable lifestyle based on less income. A huge upheaval in your personal life on top of shit gone down at work seems a lot to deal with at once. There's also no guarantee you're gonna make that much money on the 45s for sale as I think it's a bit of a slow buyer's market. ROD

6 By 6 Earl Van Dyke Oddball Copy ?
Tonya,Kegsy, No not mis-pressed. Some kinda demo for radio play. Found a lot of these once at a radio station in Georgia. Actually thinking about it I remember Tamla and Soul copies but a bit hazy whether I found any on Vip,Motown. Gordy maybe. I sold nearly all but I still have Frances Nero with "Keep on loving me" both sides on purple swirl. ROD

"One block" is on her LP "Vintage Stock" which I assume is original release. Well worth picking up for her versions of "Honey boy", "When Im gone" and "Everybody needs love" ROD

Northern Soul Record Fair
Gotta agree with Des. I was at a Black Music fair in London last year with Dave when he was over from US. Hardly any customers at all. From a punter's view no bargains at all. I bought nowt all day. Dave had cheap stuff but sold most to other dealers before doors opened, which of course they them marked up ready for the mugs. This wasn't a "Northern" fair [altho NS 45s were there] so maybe slightly different dynamic. I guess swap meet take on it might drum up some interest but as Des indicated the days of getting bodies through the door in search of a good deal are probably long gone. ROD

Motown - Nashville Matrix Stamp
Wasn't there some tale that Gordy owed money to mob and he let them press up some 45s and recoup what he owed. Something along the lines of them being not strictly legit. I've seen some Supremes and deffo "Baby I need your loving" which have very blurry labels and these were alledgedly those. ROD

Hello Love - The Majestics/monitors
I had 2 cuts of this on cassette back from first Motown unissued lot. Not right for then IMO. Gave Steve Jeffries copy of tape few years back I think with both cuts on. I think he may do carvers if you get in touch with him. If he still has it of course ROD

Rufus Wonder Under The Moon
Im assuming that's cos they copied lettering on much later "dark blue" bootleg from Lendo copy. As far as I know copies turned up more like 25 years ago and maybe earlier. Found by Larry Pietowski [Ray] on a Detroit flea along with "Do you want a boy" and "So What"by Carl Carlton. He sent me copy of each and "So what" went to Guy as an unknown so that hopefully gives an idea of when. Few years later in a garage in Detroit and amidst other rare 45s were 5 copies of the Rufus on Lendo. Seller had had them for years ROD

Who Discovered What ?
I think that should be played by Dave and I at Stafford. Got it off a mate in LA along with Monique. Pretty sure Richard didn't have it. ROD
-
Who Discovered What ?
No Richard had it and I got it off him around 1980 when he started going more toward modern. He did it play it at wigan but it didn't really go down too well. Too fast as someone else said. ROD

Who Discovered What ?
Actually I think I had that first and sold it Gary [or a mate of his] in Wigan record bar. I thought it was OK but a bit too doo-woppy in parts. £8 I think. Got it off a guy in Fla. called Jose Lopez. I used to send him UK disco for 60's and 70's soul. He had my wants list but would insist on sending me shit like the Cairos I'd never heard of. I also got the Frank Howard off him and sold it to Sam at a Ritz all-dayer. The UK hit was Indigo studios in Manchester. We did get all the soul stuff really but told Richard because he'd been going in there whilst working for RCA but had never bothered going upstairs where the 45s were. There were also loads of rare pop but weren't intested. We got the tip from some guy who'd had a Doris Troy outta there a few years before but he was no longer into soul. There was no TMG stuff though. Supposedly Johnny Hamp's stuff from either Top of the Pops or RSG when it was recorded at Plymouth Grove in Manchester. ROD

Jackie Lee
It's not THE Jackie Lee, I can tell you that. Pretty sure I found and played years ago and it was pop and maybe piano instr. Defo not soul. ROD
