the price quide like it or loath it -is never consistent with trends on the scene -the 2 are like chalk and cheese but for a collector who collects a wide breath of logos etc in a number of genres i think its a brill ref point -prices fluctuate so much that -at times its really hard to have a common sense discussion and yes numerous buyers trust john and so there should -hes a decent bloke imho .The prices stated in the quide are prices paid by johns customers and yes i would of thought that all the updated prices would be added next time round as he has done this on prior editions,the issue is as soon as printed there flucuate lol!! Good example is lee fields went for how much ?? again trends does beg the question on whether John will just state the top price of this in the next quide or perhaps the common sense price now that has levelled out ?? I use the quide alot to price funk/deep/sweet/b sides/bits of gospel,latin etc -getting the money stated is a whole new issue it is still a buyers market with not great amounts of common sense involved!! GOOD FIND JACOB OUT of interest which compilation is it on ?? cheers BAZ . that record come from Omaha, Nebraska.. I bought one years ago for 5 bucks from a local shop up there in Omaha. at the time neither I, nor the shop owner knew it was an Omaha record. then it came out on that compilation and he couldnt believe he sold it to me for a fiver haha. then he found another one and bragged to me that he got 50 bucks for it, where at that time it had already shot up to hundreds of dollars anyway haha. well anyway, handsome label design! jacob

Particulary in the eighties the prhase was coined-it was fun then because we were all into rare soul and finding them-now peoplke seem to think its kudos to own a Joe Jama lol[shit record imho]i more to do with bragging rights than quality -plus sites like this give people refo-soul which has thoushands of quality records for less than a fiver "so the turnaround has more to do with the information age etc". iM STILL AMAZED at some of the prices on ebay for records that i wouldnt give house space to but hey ho -each to their own-if some numbty is bragging at a local soul do thar he/she has a rare soul record then my view is their have missed the boat completly -im pleased people are tunring their nose up to rare soul and its connatations cos lets face it RARE HAS NOWT TO DO WITH QUALITY -perhaps it means that THE NEW RARE IS THE NEW ACCESIBLE -PHEW BOUT TIME -RIGHT IM OFF TO PLAY MY SHIT RARE THELMA DEMOS ""HAVE A GOOD DAY FOLKS"LOL. my understanding is that most of the obscure stuff much saught after on todays northern scene came about due to the vast amount of artistes trying to secure deals with motown and literally cutting tracks to get the attention of Berry Gordy? The objective of Stax was to cater for alot of the artistes which were either mistreated by Motown or lost deals etc due to the predatory nature of Gordy, he would railroad talent and monopolise it thinking that he could do what he wanted and ofcourse alot of the time he did !! Look at the production team of stax etc and its a whos who of x motown -to me it all stems from Motown-and remember the BIGGER picture was all about signing for the Motown stable thus so many small studios been used for pennies etc-when the small indie labels became a threat as Dave mentioned Berry would buy them [in the good old fashoined AMERICAN way]-!!! It was both motown and the sound of philly that got me into the scene because it made me search and dig a little deeper and brining a analogy that other labels etc would of provided the core of records for the scene is difficult to understand because -it mostly goes back to motown at some point or another through the vast amount of producers etc that came from or were associated with Motown and then worked for the other labels etc mentioned. The term northern goes back to round about 73 Dave Godin etc bet your bottom dollar people that emerged from the wheel etc firstly got into the scene due to the influence of Motown etc -it was essentially dance music with a pure hookline which hooked you in -and thus appealing to many working class kids and other kids etc-Amazed no one has mentioned the Motown appreciation society and the work Davve Godin done he knew the explosion would happen one day hence all of his efforts to break alot of the artistes to white uk audiences -perhaps he thought it would happen pre Watford not further north either way -surely all the roots of the scene are from Motown?? ah great story. For me personally The Joubert Singers 'Stand on the Word' takes a lot of beating. I was djing several weeks ago and a girl requested the song. Needless to say after carrying the tune for at least a year I had milked my box and could not play her request. There were approx. 20 girls in the club from The Glasgow Gospel Choir on a hen night and they are singing the song at The Wickerman Festival next weekend.
