  1. Shouting over loops might just catch on, have you heard about that "Rap" music the kids like these days? "Shouts over a loop beat" also covers the Wally Coco tune currently getting played; it certainly can be surprising what "funk" records get picked up on, whereas Phillip Wright on the other hand, though I'm not the world's biggest fan, has a "proper" song & arrangement, catchy hooks, distinctive & atmospheric intro etc and seems much more appropriate somehow. Not that I'm complaining about all this, if people can get away with the likes of "Message To Society" as a legitimate spin then it's surely wide open for some of the (way, way better) funk records that are jostling in the wings.
  2. Wow! Thanks a lot. Great to see the photos. In my opinion, both sides of the Grooms record are 10 out of 10 in their own way.
  3. Updated again with the rest of the soundclips, & sold stuff removed. Some belters still sat there, don't be shy.
  4. I'd still really like to know the story about the Grooms on Shiptown, I'd guess it was pressed from tapes during the period when the label fell into the mysterious other party's hands but no-one I've spoken to seems to really know.
  5. Updated, with clips & descriptions now added.

  7. I second Ian on Ray Frazier as my ultimate. A tune that hits me hard on many levels. Good calls by Dave F on L.T. & Cooperettes, Dave R on Fantastics etc, Gareth on Gemini & Merv Murphy and Sam on Elois, though.

You're right, god knows why I started spouting off, I'm not getting much work done - To the Bay!
  9. George M replied to Russell F's post in a topic in All About the SOUL
It's not so much the content (although there are numerous problems on that score) - more that it's written in the style of Smashey & Nicey crossed with a small child.
  10. George M replied to Russell F's post in a topic in All About the SOUL
That's what I was looking for, cheers Dave.

Fryer, he's just picking on you because he thinks there's only 4 of us. Little does he realise there's about 17. Bet he's still simmering about that proposed fight with Gerald that didn't come through... Dave, you should've come to Prestatyn, a Top Dog vs Jazzman arm wrestling grudge match in the record bar might've livened things up a bit. Quite the opposite: I think you'll find that the majority of people think that Rickey Vincent is a clown and his book is a bag of shite.

I'd still like to know the story behind Dean's involvement in the term "crossover". From what I understand it originally meant an "across the board" djing style that he came up with, that later became a descriptive term for a specific type of record within that spectrum, i.e. stuff that sounds like the Differences or whatever.
  13. George M replied to Russell F's post in a topic in All About the SOUL
It's "on the one", you div!

There you go! Not to mention What So Never The Dance, the stuff on Philmore Sound / General American (where they were called the Complete Strangers to offset their contractual obligations to the Clinton camp), the hard funk sound on Parliament's Good Old Music or Funkadelic's I'll Bet You, George Clinton's work on JJ Barnes' very heavy So Called Friends, etc etc... Saying that lot weren't a funk band/s is a bit like trying to make a case for Bob Marley being a rapper.

hi Dave, Hope this was sarcasm aimed at Fryer and doesn't refer to me - I hang out in trendy clubs all over America, not just in New York:nono: While I'm over there, I even hang out with people who aren't white, sometimes for whole weeks at a time - even more shockingly, and I know this will be hard to comprehend but some are actual friends of mine, not just people I'm trying to get records off of Just to confuse matters further, one of them is black but with a white-sounding DJ name:swoon: Back on the subject of crossover, I know it's often attributed to VFTS, but didn't Dean Johnson have something to do with the term coming into popular use? I read an article by him on the subject ages ago, where he was saying how his original definition was really broad (even including gospel tracks off CDs etc) but later got narrowed down so much that it eventually came to just mean "jangly early 70s soul set slightly above midtempo" or thereabouts, but I can't remember what fanzine it was in. Maybe a Manc of a certain age could step forward and shed a bit of light on this (Alan? Dave? Dean, even?).
  16. Reposting as I can't find my old thread - Strong VG+ condition (many would grade EX I imagine), clean labels. Current bid £1350, feel free to get in touch with any questions. cheers, George
  17. Thanks for all the enquiries so far, £1300 is the price to beat.
  18. Richard Caiton: I Like To Get Near You (Up Tight) offers Bids end Monday 8th Feb. at 8pm GMT Crossover crown jewel, rarely seen for sale - the last one on auction went for about £1200 five years ago. This copy is a strong VG+ (many would grade it EX) and should satisfy all but the most particular collector. Clean labels. A truly outstanding record, so if the top bid doesn't seem like a fair sum then it goes back in the box. Feel free to drop me a message if you've got any questions. Cheers, George
