True what you say about market forces Jim - However to take a Picasso as an example is a little off the mark as there is only ONE of his paintings and not several of the same painting available at any one time. Rich individuals will always pay over the top just to get it. (See Abramovich purchases of the Francis Bacon painting recently) I've never understood the thought process of for eg. Pete Smith has 'x' 45 at £200 but JM has one at auction for £350 - I'll buy that one because of reputation blah blah... Why spend more? I wish I could afford to but hey I can't! Rich

Good question but does Pats' site have a link to ended auctions like JM's does? I know Anglos auction just ends and the page gets deleted or does whenever I've looked. Rich

Might be a good one for 'The Sharp End Of Vinyl' - Aren't there some convincing boots of this? Just that I've certainly seen some on ebay and fetch daft money (even the obvious y2k re-presses) which might make folk think they're getting an original. Best Rich

Only if it's a 'Promotional Copy - Not For Sale' they might . Seriously tho' ebay allow so many boots/illegal pressings I doubt anything would happen unless the rights owners themselves complained. May be wrong but I've flagged up some bits in the past (when I've been in that kind of mood) and never heard a jot back. Is the seller any way connected to the recording? (Sorry just read rest of his post - Said he had the recording is hisstudio.....????) ** Actually just looked at his completed items and he ended the item before early 'due to a listing error' Original price was $49.99 ** Some error -'Yeah I was 200 bucks off the start price of this bootleg! Really really liked it too Mulf - New to me and always staggers me just how rare some of this stuff is even now. Not to say there aren't copies tucked away in collections - Sadly a million years from my price range. It's nagging me who they said was the vocal - I've got Jerry Williams in my head but ......... I understand the legality of it Ernie - Your right. It just seems like a complete minefield and the sheer logistics of it are huge. Funny it comes at a time when the 'traditional' record companys are finding times a little tougher in the digital age. Funny how ebay OR the record companies haven't stopped all the bootlegs being sold on ebay though isn't it? Rich

It's a complete joke really esp on the older items. I can see why the record companies are miffed at the new releases but really in the grand scheme of things its pennies. The identifiers on the CD's mentioned in Life&Souls' post are common esp on console games. When I used to manage HMV stores one of the games buyers got sacked for selling all the promos on ebay which had tracking numbers on. I dont think anything will come of this - certainly not for original vinyl (I hope!) Rich

Paul - Your first 100 UK motown LPs will probably be a great bargain (save the rare ones) these days. A Ric Tic Relics LP (ok not a first 100) just went through for £8. Bargain - And it has FF - 'Cant Stop Looking' on it. Djr - Put em up for sale on here and save yourself some ebay fees. Agree with peoples remarks on P&P - What do we all reckon is the cheapest P&P on LP's? I'll be the boot fairs this weekend - Buying all those terrible soul lp's for a quid! Best regards Rich

I would have thought it is illegal! Its probably where those sellers on ebay are getting all these boots samples from. Nice high quality tracks paid and mastered by labels such as Kent etc. I'm sure practice over the years has been some carvers/acetates have been cut with permission to promote tracks and/or forthcoming releases but as vinyl still rules in collecting circles it hasn't stopped certain people making a fair bit of brass from illegal boots/carvers whatever. All the same IMHO. Rich

Yes there are a lot of the re-issues (I have bought some in the past) sound quality has been ok on the ones I've bought. As for legality I dont know (Am sure its been discussed on here - I'll try and find the link). However things like JR Bailey / Milton Wright / etc do seem to still fetch the money even though they've been re-issued. But you are right it MUST affect the sales of some. BTW what's the score with the GUINNESS label? 12s market too has been re-pressed a lot - But am thinking more the Indie Soul 12" market. Is there a profound ignorance with buyers all buying / chasing the same tunes and not digging deeper! I think it may have been Steve Plumb who has the Tomorrows Wish 12s at £8 - It's a bloody fantastic record! Seen em go through ebay for bugger all. Soul is being missed!!! Rich

Agreed Steve. What with the Chi-Lites & Montclairs thread (Amongst the many where LP only tracks were discussed) it does go to show what is out there at little money. Have we done a great LP thread and not necessarily one / two trackers? Rich

It is and we've covered it often enough but it's still galling. A quick look through the ebay listings and a good % of items on there are bootlegs etc often sold by a handful of sellers - Some even make daft money! Rich

Just looking through sales of LPs/12s (especially ebay) and notice just how much stuff goes through without bids or very cheap.Plus plenty of Motown (as highlighted by Jim G on his LP buying thread) etc going for a few or less quid. 12" wise tons go through without selling and seems the weakest category in cases. Of course the usual rarities in-demanders etc fetch decent money but there's a ton of stuff which attracts little or no interest. No or little market? Too high P&P? Ignorance of the LP market? I for one have 'ignored' the LP market to some point so that's my excuse! Just interested in thoughts and opinions esp. from those regulary selling or colecting. Are the specialist sellers doing good trade?! Probably been done before.... Apologies if its been flogged like a dead horse but just seems reasonably relevant what with all the talk about bottoming out markets etc Best Rich
