Masquaders on Soul Town - reasonable price?
Paraboliccurve replied to Paraboliccurve's topic in Look At Your Box
Yes, I think that's probably about right. Ta. I'm on all the Facebook groups, and I've been buying (and selling) records, here and in the US, since 1985 - starting with the old paper lists from people like Pat and John Anderson and the rest, and trying to be the first to get through on the phone. I know all the ways and means! I was just saying I'm surprised not many have gone on ebay, not saying that's the only place people sell them. -
What's a reasonable price for Same Thing on Soul Town do we think? I see one sold on here fairly recently for £1500 - is that about right (if such a thing exists)? It is pretty rare - only seven on popsike, which I found surprising, with some lower values in the early part of the 2000s. Last one on ebay went for £1k in 2019. I'm trying to put together the cash to buy a collection, which unfortunately means selling some bits to fund it, so if anyone's in the market feel free to make me an offer. (ex condition, beautiful record)

Joyce Davis – Hello Heartaches, Goodbye Love / Okeh
Paraboliccurve replied to Mal C's topic in Record Wants
Absolutely magnificent record, so I won't be selling mine - but good taste -
Lovely copy of this long-time monster, label and vinyl both in great nick - I would say both are EX. Slight styrene hiss at the start but drowned by the music and clear thereafter. Unfortunately my PC is playing up so I can't add a soundfile (will do so if/when I can rectify), but obviously any issues I'm happy to take it back and get refunded. £650 ono plus £8.99 next day signed for in the UK (overseas buyers pls PM me). Payment via Paypal friends and family or bank transfer pls.

Alzheimers striking - help with a song title pls
Paraboliccurve posted a topic in All About the SOUL
This is bizarre, I'm losing the ability to remember anything. (It's not Alzheimers, at least I hope it's not.) What's the artist/song - not Gil Mateo: 'If you can't say something nice about my baby don't say nothing at all.' Very well known 70s - it's on the tip of my tongue but it has been there for about three hours. TIA! -
Jackie Wilson - I Don't Want To Lose You/Just Be Sincere
Paraboliccurve replied to Paraboliccurve's topic in Record Wants
Yep thanks, saw that. It's a bit more than I want to pay. I'll pay £30 tops. -
Super rare northern soul from New York - overlooked by Motown, certainly not overlooked by the faithful at Stafford Top of the World in the early 1980s, or the 100 Club, and a very hard-to-find record ever since. Haunting pleading vocals, great mid-tempo beat, and a good B side, too. Manship auctioned one for £1,265 in January last year, and it very rarely comes up for sale because neither collectors nor DJs tend to let it go. This is a beautiful example with the very light marking to the vinyl to be expected of a 59-year-old record, and some very slight label staining on the 'That Boy' side (see photo). £900 OVNO Also on eBay from 2pm today.

I probably didn't phrase my comment very well. I haven't made that many trips - a couple of dozen maybe - but I wasn't talking about in the wild because there's not really any such thing as in the wild any more. You'll have noticed the change around 2007 (ish) from even people in record shops not knowing what stuff was worth to stallholders at flea markets thinking that if they find anything that remotely looks like a soul record the Brits will be after it. I'm sure the same goes for other genres of music, and indeed collecting generally - the internet, principally but not exclusively eBay, slowly ruined it all except for those with very deep pockets who just want to buy the big sounds. As it happens, I have reasonably deep pockets, and I could buy any record I want - but where's the fun in that? When I stopped going to the States it was because you could no longer rock up in some small town prospecting for gold. That was the fun part for me. What I'm wondering is how much actual gear is still out there be it under lock and key or in collections or otherwise unobtainable? Unanswerable, obviously. Who knows. -

I wonder how much stuff is left over there. I started going over in the early 80s - haven't bothered for ten years or so but there was still plenty left then. You had to get a bit more creative, true. The main issue obviously is that the knowledge is everywhere. You could buy stuff for cents even in record shop basements, and they'd look at you as though you were mad for even paying that, and I'm sure that has gone by the by. -
Any chance of a photo of the record next to a copy of today's newspaper?
-
The Sable record is by far the best under this name (appreciate not all the same band) IMO. Wish I hadn't sold my copy.

I always thought Johnny Bartel should have been massive.

Am I going mad or did Tony Clayton play it at Notts Oddfellows in the 80s?
