I co-promoted a local venue for over 4 years up untill about 2/3 years back, what we did as the first night was a reasonable success we held enough back to 'cover' the next night without a single attendee, this worked well throughout our 'existence', We always agreed that if the 'kitty' was ever insufficient that it wouldn't cover the cost of the following months event we would call it a day, DJ's fees were always accounted for alongside all other costs as any lack of support for whatever reason was of no fault of the guest DJ, and like already stated if the other costs were set in stone then why not the guest DJ's? also their are some events poorly attended due to poor management ie lack of legwork with flyers and other advertising and we never wanted a guest DJ to go away thinking they have not been paid due to poor promotion, BTW do you really put your own vinyl addiction down as an event expense? you actually include this in your sums? One thing that puzzles me though, if media coverage didn't exist, how would potential newbies find the scene?? Jayne, In our neck of the woods and the rest of the north of England at least every town almost has a WMC, Church Hall, civic centre, where there is a NS related event going on, in many cases this may be the only way for the locals to get a late pint, so invariably these events are pretty well attended! There isn't many folk who i come accross that arn't at least aware there is such a scene, and more than you can imagine have sampled it! The odd tv fly on the wall/documentry isn't gonna have em flooding in by the coach load! A friend of ours jokingly tagged NS (round here at least) as the new bingo! Personally i think it gets ample exposure! But as i said either way doesn't really concern me, Pete

Loud and clear Godz, Think the 'scene' would be more appealing to newcomers if those within it would just enjoy what they enjoy and allow others to do the same, lost count of the people who have paid a brief visit to our scene and disappeared saying the music was fine but the politics, the dos and don'ts, and the confusing conflicting opinions were just to much! mainstream media good or bad has very little influence on the well being of NS! Its the natural erosion due to time along with the single mindedness of those within it will bring about its inevitable downfall! In the meantime..............Keep The Faith! Pete
