First Heard On Kent Lp's
Bought many Kent LP's and CD's over the years. I can remember buying SOUL SUPER BOWL when it first came out for Clyde McPhatter's- Please Give Me One More Chance ,and at that time knew only a handful of tracks but what an album. The first side is 60's with the Clyde Mcphatter track and others included-Trends-Thanks For A Little Lovin', Buster Jones-Baby Boy, Hesitations- She Won't Come Back,Claudia Green-Skate A Little While and Commands-Hey It's Love. Side Two is 70's including Lifestyle- Katrina, Little Anthony- Love's The Only Way To Survive, Anacosta- What Kind Of Love, Al Hudson- Spread Love, Lenny Williams- Look Up With Your Mind, Carl Carlton- You Can't Stop A Man In Love and Alicia Meyers- I Fooled You This Time. More than 25 years on and Adrian Croasdell and his team still continue to put out top quality music. Steve

Brid N Whitby Why So Different?
Would be happy just to get to one of them and they all represent good value for money. Cleggy and Brid always fall on family birthday weekends, Whitby on a junior football tournament where I am involved, and for the last three years ,Blackpool the same weekend I am involved with a football charity function. I do support a number of local nights which is equally as important though. Steve

Where Was The First Ns Night
Went to Babbacombe in 1973 and Paignton 1974. Used to go to Compass Club (Top floor) and also Tiffany's where a lot of Northern stuff was played. We got pally with a group of lads from Keighley Soul Club who were also on holiday Steve

Where Was The First Ns Night
Evening Malc, My first proper Soul night was Riddings Youth Club in Scunthorpe 1968 where Fred was the regular DJ. A number of people there also went to the Attic, Night Owl, Mojo and Wheel. I can recall going to the Attic when the Drifters (or Invitation's under the Drifter's name ?) were performing and again when Junior Walker was on. One think I will never forget is getting to the top floor for the Attic and seeing so many Skinheads for the first time, Scunny only had a handful and our village Winterton just the one Ridding's was where I first got to know Terry well. I was at a do in Grimsby a couple of weeks ago and talking to Kenny Floyd who knew Fred well and used to go with him to the Wheel. With your depth of knowledge and incredible memory, can you recall who Fred's Go Go Dancer's were ? When the term Northern Soul came to the fore, the local place to be for me was the Friendship at Keady where Rick Scott was spinning the current sounds of the time. Steve

Motown Cover Versions
- Grimsby South Bank Club
Last Saturday night I attended a charity soul do at the Grimsby Memorial Hall ( Great to see Payo again ). Walking through the entrance hall my eye caught a poster on the wall advertising a mini Soul All Nighter at the South Bank Club in Grimsby on the May 23rd. Guest DJ's- From the Twisted Wheel- Brian 45 Phillips and Scunthorpe's own Fred Benson plus GO-GO Dancers. On closer inspection with my ailing eyesight, I noticed a small circled 69 in the right hand corner and 7/6 at the bottom. I don't know who put the poster there but I bet it was some night. Can anyone recall this and any more pre 70 soul nights in Grimsby ?. Steve- Cleethorpes Pier & Winter Gardens
Thanks to you and to Missing Link for posting the photo's. I am not very technical where sending and attaching files are concerned. Regards Steve- Cleethorpes Pier & Winter Gardens
Cannot agree more. Go to Cleethorpe's regular at weekends and hurts me to see the pile of rubble there now. Last night there was a Scooter Reunion in Scunthorpe with myself, Richard Dixon and special guests Jo Wallace and PTP playing many of the old Cleethorpe's sounds to a 300 sell out crowd, many of whom were regulars back in the 70's. I have a DVD made by a local guy but do not know if there any other copies about. Ian Palin (Payo) from Grimsby was talking about putting a book together about the Pier/Gardens but I do not know how far he is on with this.- The Dip On Ebay
I Have a Dore album released in 1981 with the following tracks. Collectors Delight Vol 2. DORE LP402. Sleeve notes say the albums have done following requests for out of print material. The Whispers- I was born when you kissed me, The Dip, As I sit here, Doctor Love The Entertainers IV (Featuring Kenard)- Temptation Walk, Hey Lady, Garden Of Eden The Jades- When They Ask About You The Superbs- Baby Baby All the time, Goddess Of love, My heart isn't in it, Little Orphan Boy, Your Eyes The Fidels- I'm Giving you notice The Debonairs- Every Once In a while, Mama don't care Steve- Who Were The Trammps
- Who Were The Trammps
Agreed Paul, I also like Livin' A Life from their Atlantic days and two more from their Philadelphia output- Stop And Think and Love Epidemic. Not much use at refosoul clips if anybody can put some up. Thanks Steve- Who Were The Trammps
Not really bothered who played what first myself, just grateful for the DJ's introducing me to music I may never have heard, to be able to discuss. Steve- Who Were The Trammps
According to Jim, yes it was played at the Torch. I had both Scrub Board and Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart on UK Buddah singles but did not latch onto HBTN until hearing it at Cleethorpes. Great tunes from a great group. Steve- Who Were The Trammps
I used to have the Trammps 111 album many years ago ,and last year Eddy Edmondson was giving a track called I'm Living The Life Of A Single Man-regular plays on his Solar Radio show. I can remember being sat at the side of the dancefloor at Cleethorpe's Winter Gardens and Pep walking past carrying a Trammp's album. Not sure who played Hold Back The Night first, but I think that night was the first time I heard it. Can also recall seeing the Trammps at a Pier anniversary. Steve- What They Sold For In June 1970
A lot of new Uk records I bought from my local Vallance shop were Six Shillings and 8 pence. This would be around 1969 when a lot of reissues starting coming out. Steve- What They Sold For In June 1970
Thanks for that Malc. I went there on a regular basis during the Donny Top Rank days. One place I never got to though was Boylens at Conisborough where I think a lot of DJ's bought stuff from. Was it not a bike shop as well ? or something similar. I also sent for stuff from lists by Jeff King. Steve- What They Sold For In June 1970
Don't think it was officially released. I have a bootleg copy on Groovesville with the Wingate Strings- Lets Have a Love In (Inst) on the other side.I have the Rare Stamps album. My first ever import was from FL Moore about 1968/9- Heaven Must Have Sent You - The Elgins. 15 bob old money. I continued to buy a few records from FL Moore until I discovered a shop on Doncaster market ( Cannot remember the name-may have been Ashton or similar) then after that Selecta Disc in Nottingham. Steve- The Greatest Anti-Valentine Soul Track
Awesome record Malc. How about another of Bobby's - If You Think Your Lonely Now Steve- The Greatest Anti-Valentine Soul Track
Barbara Lynn - Take Your Love And Run Charles Mann - It's All Over O'Jays - No Time For You Steve- Soul Acts We Underrate
The Dramatics were the same group, and I had bought Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get and In The Rain before ever hearing Inky Winky Wang Dang Do. I, like a number of the older people on here would be subscribing to Blues & Soul by 1970, and as well watching the rare soul scene develop, was also buying new releases having read reviews in the magazine. As well as the Dramatics, others that spring to mind in the early 70's that I bought include: Luther Ingram-If Loving You Is Wrong Chi-Lites- Give More Power To The People Millie Jackson - Ask Me What You Want Stylistics- Stop,Look & Listen Al Wilson- Show & Tell Skylark-Wildflower Main Ingredient - Everybody Play's The Fool Bloodstone - Natural High Bobby Womack- Harry Hippie Tower Of Power- So Very Hard To Go Harold Melvin - I Miss You Invictus and Hot Wax releases- Honey Cone,Chairmen,8th Day and Freda Payne etc. With the exception of Skylark, who I cannot remember anything about, I have continued collecting other material by these artists plus many other 70's ones before, during and after the Blackpool, Wigan and Cleethorpe's Northern days, so rather than be dismissive, or overlook some of these artists who went on to major chart success, I consider myself lucky to be able to listen to such a fantastic array of music talent, and also be part of the Northern/Modern scene ( Although less frequent than the 70's). Steve- Soul Acts We Underrate
Hi Tony, I purchased the Stylistics debut album back 1n 1971 and with tracks like- You're A Big Girl Now, Point Of No Return,Stop,Look & Listen, You Are Everything and Betcha By Golly Wow, I was taken back by the quality of the group and followed them for years, witnessing a great show at Manchester about 1976. A year letter having got the Chi-Lites-Have You Seen Her single, I bought the A Lonely Man album which contained the fantastic The Coldest Days Of My Life track as well as Oh Girl, Living In The Footsteps Of Another Man, Inner City Blues and A Lonely Man ( A lot like Have You Seen Her). I saw this great group at the Nottingham Palais supported by Sweet Sensation (Remember them ?) who were quite good although not in the same league as Eugene Record & Co. Why people dismiss these is beyond me, because beneath the hits and covered hits which always seem to crop up at this romantic ? time of year, are other class soul records some of which I have already mentioned. Whether Earth, Wind & Fire come under this category I do not Know, But their albums That's The Way Of The World and Gratitude spawned some brilliant tracks-Sing A Song, Devotion, Reasons, That's The Way Of The World and Shining Star to name some and I was not put off once they achieved commercial success. Steve- Four Tops- My Heart Is Calling You
£97.30 + P & P for new. Gone up somewhat since I was showing interest. You are right Sean there are some great tracks on it. At the time I chose to buy the Spinners- Chrome Collection Book/Box set instead and I would recommend this one too. Thanks Steve- Four Tops- My Heart Is Calling You
Thanks for that. I can remember the boxed set being talked about and went on the net to search for it, but did not think it was that far back. Time flies ! Steve- Four Tops- My Heart Is Calling You
Hi Ian, A couple of year ago a box set including some unreleased stuff came out in the USA.I think it was available on import for about £50. I am assuming this was the box set Plumby was referring to. I loved it too as I do all of the Four Tops output. Steve - Grimsby South Bank Club
